someone told me that you also get vouchers for the local farmers market for produce, but I haven't ever gotten them. We started WIC last summer. I was hoping we would get them in the spring, but haven't gotten them yet. Guess I'll just wait and see if I get any when I go back in April.

He has had all his vacs except MMR and Chickenpox. Do they look at the child's vaccination records as part of WIC? I don't want them to force me to get him those shots as a prerequisite. I plan on him getting those shots after he turns 3.
Anyone know?
Thanks and sorry to
I don't know if they require children to be vaccinated, but they do require to see a vaccine record for certification, recertification(every 6 months) and at check pick-up(every 3 months). You may want to call your local WIC office to find out if selective vaccination is allowed.

I'm sorry that I don't have more information than that.

It is to me. I just got back on it because Emily is 4 and both she and I count because I am pregnant. Once the baby is born we will all count until Emily is 5. I am not sure if she will get kicked off at age 5 or when shes turning 6...It's been a few years since I last had one that came off it.

I get to stay on it while I am pregnant and then the 1st year I am breastfeeding. Then baby will be only one on it.

I actually love it where I live because now we get bread!

I get the following:

8 gallons(total) of skim or 1 % milk Any Brand~can be Powdered(Yucky) Or Evaporated also

2~64 oz Of Juice~I get Juicy Juice

3~48 oz or 11.5 frozen concentrate~I get frozen becausee JJ doesn't make 48 oz size at my store so I just get Frozen Welches WhiteGrape Peach Juice~Yummy

3~16 oz Wic Bread or Brown Rice~I am able to get Peddrige Farms 16 oz Whole wheat or rye with Seeds

2~ 1 Doz Eggs~Medium or Large Size Brown or White allowed~I get Large White

2~16 0z of Cheese~allowed~REAL American Cheese Like the Kraft in the zipper bag($), Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Cheddar & Colby

2~36 oz total of Cereal. Can Get 2~18 oz boxes or 20 oz & 16. I buy the BIG box of KIX because we love it and I never see an great deals on it. So I get 2 boxes each time.

3~ 18 oz Wic Peanut butter~Any Name brand~Skippy, JIf, Reece's ect crunchy or smooth

$14 in Canned, Fresh or Frozen Fruits or Veggies~so far I have bought Fresh Fruits and Veggies.

I figured it up and we are getting about $125 a month in Wic. I am so thankful for WIC

I get WIC for my 3 year old daughter. I LOVE my WIC workers! They know all my kids by name and are always so nice. This past Christmas, another WIC office was giving out gift cards to Payless Shoes to the families on WIC and my WIC office workers found out and grabbed 3 for me and my kids.

My WIC doesn't cover bread, but it does give checks that you can use at the local Farmer's Markets over the summer.

Farmers Market Program in WIC

I saw this before on their Web site, and since the discussion is mentioning the fresh fruits and veggies, I thought I would share it.

What is the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program?
The WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is associated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, popularly known as WIC. The WIC Program provides supplemental foods, health care referrals and nutrition education at no cost to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding post-partum women, and to infants and children up to 5 years of age, who are found to be at nutritional risk.

The FMNP was established by Congress in 1992, to provide fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables to WIC participants, and to expand the awareness, use of and sales at farmers’ markets.

Where does the FMNP operate?

Currently, 46 State agencies operate the FMNP. They include the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and 38 States: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. In addition, 5 Indian Tribal Organizations administer the Program: Chickasaw, Oklahoma; Osage Tribe, Oklahoma; the Mississippi Band of Choctaws; the Five Sandoval Indian Pueblos, New Mexico, and the Pueblos of San Felipe, New Mexico.

Who can participate?

Women, infants (over 4 months old) and children that have been certified to receive WIC program benefits or who are on a waiting list for WIC certification are eligible to participate in the FMNP. State agencies may serve some or all of these categories.

So if you know someone who can get WIC, but says they don't eat the food the coupons are for, tell them about this addition to the program.

Janet

NoahsMomma, just wanted to let you know, the cut-off is the child's 5th birthday. I think they figure age 5, because once they are in school, they can qualify for free/reduced lunches. HTH!

I am very thankful for having wic right now. DS #2 has a milk protein allergy and he is on hypoallergenic formula called elecare which is about $48 a can. I was already on wic since I was pregnant and my older son is getting it. So with a prescription from the doctor wic pays for some of my formula which helps out alot. I am so thankful for this because we just wouldnt be able to pay that much for it at this time. We are going to buy more off of ebay since it is cheaper than getting it at the pharmacy. Also in the summer you get vouchers for the farmers market.

If you qualify and want to I say you should get it.

I also got a breast pump. It was super nice and when I accidently messed up one of the tubings, they gave me a whole new set of supplies (bottles, valves, tubing, etc) free.

Neither did I. But the lady at WIC told me that they are going to do away with the Juice and just give more fruits & veggies. Maybe in other states they give different things? I know in MI you get vouchers to go to the farmers market for 3 months. I get fresh fruit or veggies each month now.

totally worth it!! We get milk, eggs, chez, pb, cereal and fresh produce in the summer.

You can stockpile the formula for if and when you may need it.

We counted it a great blessing when we were on WIC! Be prepared to jump through some hoops with the appointments, but I felt it was definitely worth it at the time.

We have produce too. I was getting $5 towards fruits and veggies for the 1st 6 months postpartum and my daughter got $5 as well (she's 2). We just redid ours and now she gets $6 but I don't get mine anymore. We got 2 less cans of formula but 32 things of size 2 baby food.

I have to say I am glad they changed what you get on WIC. We were getting so many cartons of eggs and cans of juice! Now they have reduced the juice and upped the fruits and veggies to $6 even for kids that are 1. The whole wheat bread and brown rice make a lot of sense too. Although they need to expand what you can get for these because sometimes some stores around here do not have one of the 4 breads you can get. I wanted to buy rice with one of ours last month and not one of the brown rice bags or boxes at Tops were 16 or 32 ounces.

We get it for our 1 1/2 year old and 2 1/2 year old and it helps our food budget quite a bit. Especially with the way our family goes through milk, we need the help. . We used to have a problem with cereal we didn't eat, but now you can Frosted Mini Wheats and Honey Bunches of Oats. I think they should add regular oatmeal to their cereal list. Not only could you use it for breakfast, but also for baking and cooking.

Here in Texas, the Mother is on WIC for 6 months after the birth if formula-feeding, but twelve months if BF. The best thing for me about being on it whether I really need it all or not at the time - you can stockpile till you need it, and when my daughter turned one, she was easy to requalify - we didn't have to fill out paper work or interview again. We do have to do the iron finger-prick every 6 months for mother and child.

Right now, I'm 5 months pregnant and my daughter is 13 months, and we get 4 lbs of cheese, 12 cans of juice (frozen or from concentrate in metal cans), 4 dozen eggs, 9 gallons of milk, 4 cans evaporated milk, 2 lbs dry beans (or you can choose peanut butter), and something else I'm forgetting. If you can qualify, take advantage - you may need all this later on.

I live in NC so I know WIC is different from state to state but I would deffinatley get on WIC regardless on if I was breastfeeding or not. That way you will get good nutrition with the cheese and cereal and stuff.

I am so thankful for this because we just wouldnt be able to pay that much for it at this time. We are going to buy more off of ebay since it is cheaper than getting it at the pharmacy. Also in the summer you get vouchers for the farmers market.

If you qualify and want to I say you should get it.
My daughter is on Elecare too {vanilla - she's allergic to plain elecare & neocate} - I need to get her back on WIC. We stopped for a while due to a rude certifier who lectured me for keeping her on a bottle at 2.5 - her pedi said it was fine since the alternative to get enough in her is a feeding tube.

And for the person who asked about vaccines & WIC - they are in NO WAY tied to receiving benefits. We have a religious exemption to all vaccines, and have never had an issue with WIC.
