DD is 14 months old and still not walking. I know that the average is 9-14 months, so I getting a little worried. She pulls herself up and walks holding onto the sofa, she is a speed crawler, and she climbs the stairs. We try to get her to walk using a little toy that she can hold on to, but she doesn't even stand on her own without holding on to something. Just curious as to when your kids started walking?????

My first was 14 1/2 months when he first walked without holding onto anything. As a baby, he seemed happy to sit in the bouncy chair, and we let him sit. He walked holding onto things - usually pushing a toy car in each hand with his rump sticking up in the air -- forever before walking alone. Once he finally walked upright, he progressed quickly. Our second was 11 1/2 months. He didn't "take off" -- he took 1 step the first day, two the next, and seemed to add a step a day for about 2 weeks. He's crazy independent and very physical, because he has a crazy role model, his 3 YO brother. He went down the slide alone at 13 months, after his brother, and has never looked back. I think it is normal for first children to walk later, unless you really work on it with them, and leave them on the floor alone a lot. When we had 2, we were just busier, so we let #2 lay on the floor a lot. This way they could 'play' together. #2 rolled over sooner and more often, stood sooner, walked sooner, but is much less verbal at 17 months than my first was at the same age. I'm not saying your daughter is normal or abnormal. You know your child and will be first to know if something is wrong. Trust your instincts.

My daughter walked at 12 months, son at 13 months. Grand daughter at 17 months. Actually she didn't learn to walk, she learned to RUN!!! And has been running every since. All children are different. If she is pulling up and holding on while walking, there shouldn't be a problem. She can just get there faster by crawling.

If you are worried, it is always worth it to have your child evaluated by your state's early intervention program. It should be free and will let you know if you should actually be concerned and whether your child qualifies for services (which are low-cost or free).

My first walked at 14 months, 2nd at 9 months, and 3rd at 11 months. It differs GREATLY from kid to kid. Some never crawl(like my second), some never teeter and just take off running(like my first), and some go through every stage by the book(my third). Don't worry!

My 13.5 month old isn't walking yet. Don't worry! My pediatrician said the 'average' age is 12-15 months and even if it takes longer, it doesn't mean anything is wrong. Sometimes I think personality comes into play. My little boy is just very laid back and content to watch. I wouldn't worry yet.

Just a little side note: research indicates a direct correlation between crawling and reading. The longer a child crawls the better reader they tend to be as they grow older. I have come across this tidbit in several different sources, and I have even heard that some adult literacy classes have encouraged adult students to get on hands and knees and practice crawling. Humbling, I'm sure. Anyway, I thought perhaps this might provide a silver lining or a positive aspect of some sort to a parent who is concerned about possibly having a late walker. (BTW, I'm sure there are tons of exceptions and extremes. It's just a little something I've learned along the way.)

My son, now 16 months, started walking at 9 months. He showed no interest in it at first, then one day he stood up by himself and the next day he was off....and he hasn't stopped since!!!

DD is 17 months. About 4 weeks ago she started taking multiple steps at a time (5+ at a time) and a week later she promptly broke her leg, LOL. Cast came off yesterday and she's back to cruising and getting the strength back as well as her courage.

My grand daughter walked at 8 months. That was a nightmare. Someone that short up and about is not a good thing. My babies right at one. My DD allowed her to be up and going at a very early age. I do not think that a mobile baby at that age is a good thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My son started walking at 11 months. I know a little girl who started walking at 7 months, and another who just started walking a week ago, and she is over 19 months. |

15 months for my first. i was wicked worried, but the said she is normal. she had a very laied back personality. one trick we learned is to hand them a large beach ball and walk around with them holding it. eventually let go and they wil think you are still holding on and go by them selves. we did this with my younger two and both were walking right at a year. i think sometimes if its your first you have more time to sit and cuddle and stuff and just focus less on teaching them to be independant. so they walk later. a year from now you will never be able to pick out the early walkers from the late ones.

My oldest DD didn't start walking till she was 15 months old and even then it wasn't all the time. My middle DD started walking at 9 months and my youngest DD started walking the week before she turned 1, she is now 14 months and just this week starting to walk the majority of the time.

My DD is 12.5 months and stand on her own for maybe a couple seconds. She cruises or crawls every where she needs to go. I am not worried; I know she will walk when she is ready. Posters who know me are probably laughing because I was scared when she wasn't crawling at 10 months. My friend's twins started walking around 14 months and another friend started walking at 10.5months. My mom told my oldest brother started walking at 7 months...that is a scary thought! My DD gets into enough trouble cruising and crawling! HTH!
