The only place I taught that had good meals was out in the country - they made everything from scratch in the kitchen there - fab. soups! Soooo disapointing to move back to suburban schools - I think I ate the grilled cheese every day & that wasn't so hot either. The worst were "travelling nachos" - they dumped some chili into a small bag of doritos - GAG!

That was the way my school was. They made most of their meals homemade. Everyday they had homemade rolls. My kids always come home starving and I'm so tired of that already.

my high school didn't have a caff. still doesn't (however it could afford a brand new gym, right)
we ate in the old gym that was sectioned off so 1/2 was having a gym class while the other half was eating (we had diffrent lunch periods) more than once doge ball came flying into our tables

anyway point was government food STUNK! the grill cheese was dry and crusty so you could only eat the middle everything was prepared one school over and sent by bus to our high school so by the time it got there it was cold. it stunk. And you knew who the poor kids were (do they still have free or reduced lunch for the less well off kids) because they were the only ones
who would get the school lunch.

the schools get government food for lunches problem is the regulations for the food hasn't been looked at after the 80's so the kids are still getting school from early 80's according to that food perimade (sp) not the current childrens nutritional needs.

Oh by the way I live in a very small town. There are about 800 kids total in my school. They could make homemade lunches if they wanted to. But they opt for what I consider junk food. And they cook their hamburgers in the oven and they are dried out and nasty.

yucky days and good days
we let the girls take their lunch so we know what they are eating.not necessarily know what they are eating, but rather know if they ate their lunch or not
all 3 kids are starting to get picky at home too

Snacks/ Ice cream
Our wonderful governor has lost a lot of weight and now it is the school's fault children are over weight, so no snacks or icecream sold here, along with any candy fund raisers, cokes, or anything "unhealthy"

This is why my son will be taking his lunch. I want him to eat good food, not nasty half warm, leftovers turned into something else food.

I agree with all of you. My aunt is the head of food service for a county here in VA and I can't believe some of the stuff that she tells me about the school lunch programs. Did you know that ketchup counts as a veggie? Yep, corn syrup and all! She gets very frustrated by the bureaucracy and the fact that the lunch programs, while subsidized with some foods, must be self-funding, so she's got to try and make a profit while trying to follow antiquated guidelines. If they make real, healthy food to sell, the kids don't buy it. So they end up with the chicken nuggets, tacos, pizza, etc. everyday.

On a side note, my high school (20 yrs ago) had the best yeast rolls for 15-cents. They rocked!
