| New and trying to stock up
I just started couponing in late Nov. and trying to stock up on things that we use at home. I get excited about my savings and share my stories with my family. Now my Mom and Sister are asking for things out of my stock pile. I try to show them how to coupon but they just rather I do it and get the stuff from me. But I don't want to coupon for 2 other people because it's hard enough for me to get enough coupons for myself. Is this being selfish? I wouldn't mind sharing my stash once I get stocked up but I'm not to that point yet.

I don't think it's selfish, at all. I'll offer to pick up things for people if I know I can get a good deal on it--I tend to make a few extra bucks this way doing shopping trips for my friends. But your family shouldn't expect to keep reaping the benefits of your hard work if they aren't willing to put in a little effort of their own, like getting/clipping their own coupons or reimbursing you for the time you spend. Sharing is great, and I love that I'm getting to the point where I can use my stockpile and couponing skills to do good--just don't let others take advantage of your kindness and generosity!

They shouldnt expect you to share your stockpile with them, they need to think about your time and gas money you put into it, I would just tell them it takes alot of effort to get these good deals, I know I spend alot of time to find the best deals I can get, I dont think your being selfish at all.

I had the same problem with my neighbor, although she is not family, I still have to see her everyday. (whether I want to or not!) Anyways, there's a few things you can do to stop them from taking your stuff. You can hide it (which may or not be easy to do, depending on space and if they freely go through your house), or just tell them no- they can't have your things. Since they don't want to do all the leg work involved to get the bargains you do, then I would just explain to them that you are doing this for your family, not just for them. You want to make sure that your family has enough to eat and stock up on the things that your family consumes. If you have extras, then they are more than welcome to them. But not until you offer. I would stop telling them about your finds (which I know is hard to do, especially after a really good shopping trip!). And No, you are not being selfish-- you are being practical. Who knows what is going to happen in this economy and many people losing jobs-- it's smart for you to stock up on things your family uses. I know that it's hard to say no, I'm the same way. Another alternative would be for them to pay you for the items that they want at a slight discount. Extra money for you and cheaper things for them. You know your family and what would work out best for you all. You dont' want to start a major family fight over something as silly as toilet paper or mascara! Good luck and be strong! |

Tell them you can't get them stuff now. Just say later when your overflowing. I told my family this. They don't coupon either. I'm sure they will understand once you tell them how its time consuming shopping already. Add couponing research time and the limited time you have you just don't have the luxury to get more stuff for others. Tell them when your ready, you can slowly give them some things that they may like from your stock. I tell my family how difficult it is shopping with my two kids. I can only give stockpile at the end of year later when I know I wont need so much. good luck and have fun.

I would just offer to help them get started couponing but not make any mention of the things you have in your stockpile. I know it is hard to turn down family but this is defeating your whole purpose for stockpiling when you don't they get your supplies.

I am starting to have this problem too! I have helped a couple of friends get started. Even put together thier binders! I now only share my good stories to these friends! I share my goodies with my MIL. She will call me before going to the store for one or two items! She gives me her Qs from the paper so of course I will give her stuff!
