Habitat for Humanity Restore: (Raleigh, NC) The Habitat for Humanity of Wake County ReStore supports neighbors in need of affordable housing and encourages all of us to be good stewards of our environment. The ReStore sells new and used building materials to the public at discounted prices. Shoppers find lumber, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardwood furniture, paint, windows, doors, cabinets, tile, blinds, shutters, appliances and more -- all in a new 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse. The retail store has 107 parking spaces and easy roadway access to both donate items (for a tax-deduction) and pick up purchases. In fiscal year 2007, the ReStore diverted 2,500 tons of usable materials from landfills. The ReStore innovatively collects new and used building materials from community donors and Habitat's DeConstruction program. The DeCon program salvages building materials as well as interesting architectural features by hand from residences being demolished. Donations are tax-deductible. (We've discovered that crews can reuse or recycle up to 85% of a house's building materials; this gives us a lot of inventory to offer.) Make plans with our DeCon staff by calling 919.833.1999 x231. Shoppers and donors to the Habitat Wake ReStore play an important role in carrying out the Habitat mission. All profits support the building of new Habitat homes in our community

You can always go to petfinder.org and find a listing for a local rescue near you and give them a holler to see what they need.

Animal shelters can use lots of help around here in Bedford, PA but "People" organizations don't seem to want help. I called the local food bank and they were real interested in accepting a donation of cash but when I explained I had canned goods, they were not interested. I then called another organization and they weren't very interested either. Geech, this county has an unemployment rate of nearly 13% - surely there are people in need!

| NEW YORK CITY These places accept all those lovely toiletries we've stockpiled: West End Intergenerational Residence - transitional housing for women accepting unused toiletries Sylvia's Place - emergency shelter for runaway teens, mostly from the GBLT community. They accept new and partially used toiletries as well as food items. The Food Bank has stopped providing certain necessities due to cutbacks: milk, eggs, fresh fruit. But they're happy with any and all food. They also go through a lot of first aid products, e.g. band aids and neosporin-type ointment. Trinity Place Shelter is a similar but smaller organization accepting all these things. Bottomless Closet - helping disadvantanged women get into a professional work setting. They provide workshops in interview skills, budgeting, etc but their main purpose is to sort and distribute good second hand career clothing. They also give each woman a goodie bag to get started (only unused products accepted): cosmetics, all kinds of toiletry items, stockings, etc. Craigslist - this probably sounds insane to most people, but I look for genuine requests on the Items Wanted and Volunteer pages from mostly single parents who aren't making ends meet. Food stamps don't cover toiletries, so giving them stuff from your stockpile frees up their cash for things like their electricity bill and school supplies. |
