(CAG.N: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Wednesday it is recalling two brands of peanut butter on a possible link to salmonella, a foodborne illness that can cause death if not treated with antibiotics. | PETER PAN and GREAT VALUE peanut butter are being RECALLED.......if the product code starts with the following numbers.......2111 The peanut butter has been linked to Salmonella poisoning. They were talking about it this morning on the Today show. HERE IS AN ARTICLE...... ATLANTA — A salmonella outbreak that has slowly grown to nearly 300 cases in 39 states since August has been linked to tainted peanut butter produced in Georgia, federal health officials said Wednesday. It is believed to be the first salmonella outbreak associated with peanut butter in U.S. history, said officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 20 percent of the 288 infected people have been hospitalized, but none has died, said Dr. Mike Lynch, a CDC epidemiologist. About 85 percent of the infected people said they ate peanut butter, CDC officials said. How salmonella got into peanut butter is still under investigation, Lynch said. The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter because of the risk of contamination. The affected jars have a product code on the lid that begins with the number "2111." The affected jars are made by ConAgra in a single facility in Sylvester, Ga., the FDA said. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected, the agency said. ConAgra said it was recalling products as a precaution. "Although none of our extensive product tests have indicated the presence of salmonella, we are taking this precautionary measure because consumer health and safety is out top priortity," spokesman Chris Kircher said. "We are working closely with the FDA to better understand its concerns, and we will take whatever additional measures are needed to ensure the safety, quality and wholesomeness of our products." The largest number of cases were reported in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri. Salmonella infection is known each year to sicken about 40,000 people in the United States, according to the CDC. Salmonellosis, as the infection is known, kills about 600 people annually. Symptoms of salmonella can include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting. The new outbreak began in August, but just two or fewer cases have been reported each day, CDC officials said. It was only in the past few days that investigators were able to hone in on a particular food, Lynch said. ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 that was already distributed and is destroying all affected products the company still has, the FDA said. The company will cease production until the exact cause of contamination can be identified and eliminated. Meanwhile, ConAgra advised consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111. The FDA sent investigators to ConAgra's processing plant in Sylvester where the products were made to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for salmonella. ——— Associated Press writer Andrew Bridges in Washington contributed to this report. |

| well we have 3 jars and one expires this month(2/25/07) and it sarts with a 2111. I guess the 2111 is the run from a particular plant and they probably have always used that for the start of the run. Good posssibilty there are several hundred thousand of these jars.I seriously doubt that that jar has anything wrong with it,but no way will I take the chance. Does anyone have a jar that doesn't start with 2111? |

The next day he was throwingup, belly ache, headach and fever. Im wondering if that was what caused him to get sick. It was Great Value 2111 a brand new jar. |

| This explains last weekend! Yep, I have 2 Great Value Peanut butters with the 2111 on the lid. I also have a Food Club (Piggly Wiggly store brand) peanut butter in the same type of packaging with a 2111 on the lid. All 3 are opened and we have eaten from them-- even my kids. Then I also have 2 smaller jars of the Food Club brand, unopened, but since they are smaller jars they don't have anything stamped on the lid. But I'm getting rid of all of them. I have been unable to get through the 1-800 number to ask about the Food Club brand, but since the packaging and peanut butter appear to be exactly the same, I'm pretty sure that's the case. Last weekend after everyone had pbandj sammys we all got violently ill with vomiting and diarreah. I think this explains it pretty clearly. Ugh. I usually don't get worked up at all over recalls, and I wasn't even gonna bother to check my stores, but as I was about to make another pbj for my 2 year old for lunch yesterday, I decided I better check it out. And there it was!!! Now, since we are all well this week, do you think we still need to get checked at the Dr. over this? |

| at least call your doc / nurse and see what they say--usually you can talk to them for free (nurse's line). Food Club is traditionally a Meijer brand (I am sure it's others too)..the only ones mentioned are Great Value (Wallyworld brand) and Peter Pan. If you cant get through on the toll free number, you might want to call your local health dept. best advice: IF IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT. and if you need it, buy JIF...it runs about $2.09 for a medium size jar here at Krogers...a little cheaper at Meijers. |
