"Economic shock gives rise to coupon cutting"

Interesting Article regarding Coupon Usage in today's CNN online edition.

Link to article: Economic shock gives rise to coupon cutting - CNN.com

I especially loved this part of the article....

"As couponing has become more popular, Brown said manufacturers have become more restrictive with their offerings by imposing shorter duration periods and more purchase requirements to get the deal. (Ha Ha ...sounds like Walgreens to me!)

"If the consumer is being responsive and using more coupons, the marketer wants to keep that contained so it doesn't become too costly to them," Brown said."

Not a surprise. I have also noticed more where you have to buy 2 or 3 items to use the coupon. This makes it difficult for older people, singles, and young couples who usually can't use 2 or 3 of an item and also it lowers the actual value of the ocupon.

Unless of course you can triple them. But of course, a tripled on a single item is still much better than on 2 or 3 items.

Just a couple years ago there was much chatter about manufacturers doing away with coupons totally because "people don't use them." But we know differently and now they are seeing that people do use them - effectively.

Ahh, I just posted this article in "In the News"... I hope they don't cut back too much and that this economy rebounds sooner rather than later.

I think the wealthy in America have no idea what coupons are and why we hunt so hard to find a good deal to use them on. You would think they would want to increase the supply of coupons to promote their products and to compete with their competiors. These stats. show just how bad our economy really is.

Did you notice~Walmart & Target up 11% in coupon use since 2007~maybe since they are making money with the handling fees and such they could train their cashiers better to understand them.

You would think that retailers would think about the overall benefit if pushing for coupon use. Think about it, when the economy is down like it is, coupon use goes up heavily. When the economy bounces back, customers will remember what companies took care of them through the tough time and will usually remain loyal for it.

No, I've seen some well-heeled folks using coupons. Not just for the thrill of it, either. They simply see it as shopping smart.
