Help Sign Possibly Moving To Vegas

My company is opening new stores in Nevada, specifically Vegas. I was hoping someone could help shed some light on cost of living, utilities, stores to shop at, any neighborhoods to avoid, cost of childcare, etc! I have never even visited Vegas or Nevada. I appreciate any help anyone can offer! Thanks so much!!!

I would be happy to talk to you about it, you can pm me. A few years ago we looked between Vegas and Reno and chose Reno. There are some nice neighborhoods in Vegas, but the crowds and traffic drove me insane and I am originally from the Baltimore/Washington area. I see you are from TN, I can tell you this--It is definitely a DRASTIC change from the south. Food and expenses are higher, rent is unbelievable but the houses you can get are so much nicer and larger. I took a 30% salary increase to move there from NC and it balanced out. Also Vegas was the hardest hit by the economy and their unemployment rate is still very high, so if you have a SO that would be looking for work also, that is something to keep in mind.

i currently live in vegas
a 3bedroom apt & i pay $950 a mo.
i dont pay for water the complex takes care of that we just pay elctricity which is about $100 a mo. but i have 4 other ppl living w/me not sure how big ur fam. is & we also pay gas average $40-50 but can go higher during winter
childcare is about $200 a week 5 full days i had looked into kindercare for my toddler im not sure if u have a child that age? & price varies by area also
I would avoid the NE area towards nellis afb i heard theres a lot of shooting in that area
As for stores to shop at we cant double coupons here in vegas so its a lil harder to get deals but u still can im a newbie to this whole coupon thing so im still learning

It is just me, DH and DD (she is two) right now he stays home with her, so childcare isn't that big of an issue. We have looked at several options. I've found several houses 2-3BR for 650, which is a nice range for us. Some are newer, some are older. I've found a few apartments that are 650-750 for 2 BR. I called the utility companies and such, and everything seems reasonable, in fact, it's cheaper than I pay here in TN!!

I live in Henderson, NV, which is very close to Las Vegas (15 minutes away).

We live in a townhouse type apartment that rents for about $1400 for a 4 bedroom with 2 car enclosed garage. We also get free wifi internet. There are also other smaller 3 bedroom apartments in the area for about $800-$900. There are always have one month free or some kind of specials if you are planning on renting. They sometimes give you a bonus on renewals too.

The main stores that I do coupon and shopping are Smith's, Albertson's, CVS, Target, Fresh N' Easy, and Walgreens. I just drove out to the Glazier's store in the Summerlin area today and got some great deals. They are opening a store in Green Valley (Henderson) at the end of the year and I can't wait!

We live in an area near the Sunset Station Casino/Walmart/Costco/Galleria Mall. We have every store we need within a square block so my gas lasts me more than an average person. It takes me about 30 seconds to get to Walgreens and I usually go there three times a week.

My kids love their schools and we moved here from Hawaii. They have really thrived as compared to being in Hawaii. I would have never thought.

We have lived here for six years now and there are so much more good things that outweigh the not so good things.

Feel free to ask me any questions . Good luck!

I live in the NW - moved here from Northern VA / DC area.

If you send me your email, I will email you a .pdf that covers some of these questions (it's a .pdf for relocating to Vegas).

Yep, no double coupons here. Supposedly a few stores will but they don't announce it and its only a few days a year. Kmart is doing double coupons now.

We moved here 3 years ago and LOVE it. So much to do (AND CHEAP) - we do so many free shows, concerts, etc. and as being a local you get other free stuff.

Our electric is high in the summer and low in the winter and our gas is the opposite season so it evens out. The local power will give you a payment plan for each month so you can budget your monthly bill.

Our housing market has been hit hard. You can get more $ PSF in the NW area vs Henderson. Near Nellis AFB (in the east) is an older area of town with fewer amenities and older homes. Henderson is more green and more hustle and bustle (too much traffic fore me).

Lots of parks for kids and dogs - seems like there is one on every corner.

What else do you want to know? It's a great place to live.

I'm originally from Texas and would love to leave this city. Weather is awesome except for summer. Not very green either environmentally or landscape wise. No fleas if you have pets, which is awesome. My car insurance tripled moving here. My house is worth one third of what I paid 6 years ago. Lost my job and am out of work 6 months. People can be very rude! Horrible drivers and if it rains stay at home because it gets even worse. Mountains are nice to look at. Been here 9 years and the charm wore off after a couple. If your company is opening a store please let me know, I need a job. Oh and by the way regulations here can be very strict depending on the industry you are in. yards are small for the most part, at least compared to what I'm used to. Very dry, and summer is like standing in front of the oven with the door open. Good location if you want to travel a lot.
