| Extremely frustrating Publix trip
I guess today was not my day to shop. Cruddy CVS then Publix. My baby was fussy so I had to hold her while I shopped. I get to the checkout and get everything on the belt. The cashier asked if I had coupons and I said yea, I was looking for 2 others I had forgot to get out. She stood there and I realized she wanted the coupons before scanning anything! Fine, whatever. She started scanning and I handed her the coupons. She would pick up one coupon, look for that item, even if it wasnt next to her on the belt, scan it and repeat. OMG it took forever. I was using those B1G1 Ziploc Qs along with .55/1 qs and I realized after I left she screwed it up. Didnt scan all of the B1G1s. Then I had that 4/1 Pace coupon and she wouldnt take it because it was over the amount of the salsa. I really DO NOT like them scanning the coupons like that. I'd rather it be at the end so I can watch and make sure they do it right. Should I have said no, I'd rather you scan at the end? I actually asked her, you dont do it at the end anymore? And she said it's up to the cashier. Maybe next time I'll lie and say no and get them out at the end. Anyone else having this issue with them scanning the Qs like that? |

Sometimes when I go they lay the coupons out in groups and as they run across the item they scan the coupon. I actually prefer it that way because then I know that each coupon is getting scanned. I always worry that if I hand them to them at the end they won't scan some of them and i would never know. Sorry you had a bad trip.

I happen at Kmart yesterday then they wouldn't let me use the 5/50. Then we went to Publix in Gainesvile, FL and they said they would no longer take 2 coupons for B1G1 free items!

I would have politely told her "Yes I do have coupons, but I prefer them to be taken at the end" and just left it at that. If she pressed it further I would have added that having a child with me doing them all at once at the end makes it easier to keep track of them. I always do mine at the end. I pre-count how many I'm handing over too and then count along as they scan to be sure every single one goes through. Having 2 kids with me, plus my mega-pregnancy brain there's no way I'd be able to keep track if they scanned q's as they went.

I have had one cashier want to match up everything. It was a total pain! After I had her that one time, and she saw that everything was legit, it was like she knew me personally and just took my huge stack of coupons after that without batting an eyelash. Some of the cashiers get really nervous about coupons. I try to be friendly with them and tell them how I double and triple check everything before I give them the stack. Sorry you had a bad trip. Some days are like that, and some days I want to do a dance at the register. |

I've had cashiers do that too. I also prefer to have them scan the coupons at the end so I can make sure they get them all. Usually when they scan as they go, I end up going to customer service for a refund of something they missed. Plus it's hard to check what the price rings up at if you're still unloading.

Sorry about your experience. Those Pace coupons are a huge problem. Google vyrl mktg coupons and you will see the problems and why they didn't want to take those coupons. Back with the vyrl scandal, the fake coupons were insanely higher than the value of the product (e.g. $5 off a 12-pack of coke that was $3.xx). Publix lost hundreds of thousands on those coupons. Many managers actually called Pace to confirm the coupons. EDIT: Cashiers are trained AND SUPPOSED to take coupons at the beginning of the order to #1 - ensure all products are correct and #2 - prevent fraud. |

What I have learned is to find a cashier(s) that are coupon friendly and then I only go to that lane, even if I have a longer wait. It saves me the frustration and I have actually gotten to know a couple of them this way. They no longer ask me for id when I use my hubby's card and rarely ever question my q's. We get to chit chat while doing the order and it makes for a good shopping experience.

I actually also prefer the laying them all out method. I can see right away if they miss one. And I might be wrong, but if it they do it that way doesn't the coupons show up right under the item, instead at the end??

I had the Publix in Gainesville by Skate Station tell me I couldn't use two coupons on BOGO items. She gave in after I complained. Then, two days later I went to the Williston Road Publix and they had no problem taking two coupons on BOGO items.

i would prefer to lay them out with the item and have several times, only to have the cashiers just collect them and scan them all at the end, Lol..so now i just give them my qs at the end..i also, write the price of items in for them..they may recheck it, but are always happy that i do that for them..i try to use the same cashiers so that they know me and trust the qs i give.

Not true, this would vary by store/chain. I was a cashier and we were trained to take q's at the end.

It is a YMMV situation and each store is different. Every store is different. Thanks so much for all your input on this. I greatly appreciate each and everyone one!

#1 - Publix trains its cashiers to ask for coupons at the beginning. I have no clue about the rest of the world. #2 - In regards to this: Target did the same to me a couple of weeks ago. Can't use a cents off coupon for the first item and a BOGO for the second item. Fortunately, Publix does allow it!... Target was correct. A BOGO coupon is technically a manufacturer coupon for TWO ITEMS so you cannot use another coupon on that item or you are breaching contract on the coupon. It is not that Publix allows this, because they certainly don't encourage fraud... It is that your cashier just did not realize what they were doing. |

I asked a manager at on publix why the cashiers in the store are so different with the coupons and she said they have meetings and are told how to take and handle Qs but she said some cashiers still try to intimidate some customers and if the customer does not insist on getting the manager, then the cashier thinks she has won some battle. I couldn't believe a manger said that. she said they get call backs from customers all the time about the cashiers who so things "their own way. She told me from now on just request the cashier get the manager if she refuses to follow their policy.
