| Free KC Masterpiece... and saw a mommy STEAL!
I went to Meijer today to buy some Salmon and decided to check the price of the KC BBQ sauce.... I had 2 $.50/1 and 2 of the $2 off pork ribs wyb KC product Q's and pork ribs were on sale. So the KC is on Price Drop at $1.47 and there was a tag that said Buy 2 and get a $1 off instantly With my 2 $.50/1 Q's doubled, that made the BBQ sauce free and the ribs pretty cheap - almost made up for the salmon I bought![]() Anyway, I got behind a woman in the self checkout (the one with the belt and no limit) and I noticed as I was walking over that she looked at the attendant 2 or 3 times over the uscan, which didn't seem odd at first but then she kept looking around constantly. She was starting to make me nervous with all her fidgeting so I looked down at my Q's to double check them and just by coincidence I looked up to see her stack one of those Tide Dryer Cleaners on top of her Huggies wipes as she scanned it and then place them on the belt together!!!! ![]() I really didn't know what to do... and I did nothing I'm not proud of it but she had an infant and a toddler with her and I just couldn't help but cringe at the anxiety the toddler would feel if I spoke up and the store got involved. Maybe this sounds odd but if it was just the infant, I'm 90% sure I would have said something... he was too little to know something bad was happening. The toddler, on the other hand, would have felt a lot of fear & anxiety![]() BTW, this was in a wealthy area and the mom was wearing very nice clothes/shoes/purse/jewelry - some of it designer. She also got into a BMW in the parking lot - couldn't have been more than a year old. I say that not to be judgmental but because, right or wrong, I know that some Moms & Dads have had to do things they would have never done 5 years ago just so their kids are fed & clothed during the economic crash our area has seen. That is not what this was and I left the parking lot feeling angry at her for putting her kids in harms way like that and angry at myself for not speaking up. She did pay for her People magazine though |

Mom2, that is a tough one. I would have been shocked too. You just dont expect to see that! I don't know that I would have said something though. You never know how she would react. It's one thing to intervene if someone is being hurt, etc but over store merchandise... I dont know. I don't think that you should feel bad because you didnt speak up. It is a shame though that she did this in front of her children. Some people?!?

You'd think the security cameras would be watching her, she will get caught eventually and pay big time...so sad that she has children that will be involved in that. I would have just quietly told her that I think she missed scanning an item and give her a smile.

That is so sad. I've had to make sacrifices before and stealing was never one of them. I'm real firm when it comes to lying, cheating, and stealing. I was not brought up that way and I raised my children the same way if you don't have the money to pay for it you don't get it.

Thats too bad she was stealing like that, I just went to jury duty this week and you know embrassing it was to see people get kicked off the panel for being labeled a shoplifter. That name sticks with you and its not pretty to have people know you did that.

I would have pointed it out to her very loudly that she forgot to scan the Tide. Sorry I cannot let someone steal it is just wrong. I don't care if I embarrassed her or her kids. She was the one that was teaching her kids that stealing is OK. She us what causes prices to go up to cover her stealing.

| I'd have done the same - or gone to an employee nearby to tell them. At least I hope so - sometimes we're so caught off guard in these situations that the shock prevents us from acting quickly enough.

wow, not sure what i would have done, i would not have probably confronted her, because she would have probably denied it and just said something ugly to you. i probably would have told the cashier at the self checkout and maybe next time they will be watching her.

That's really horrible on a lighter note my 6yo went in tonight with me to get the kc deal. We did the uscan checkout as we were only getting the BBQ sauce...I let her scan the items and the coupons and hit pay now..out prints a receipt with a 0 total!!! I think I started something!! There was a little twinkle in her eye, and out pops the comment: mom I really like this coupon thing!! Gotta love it |

Whoa! Thats so wrong. But I wonder, didn't the unscanned item beep while she was exiting the store? To my knowledge, any unscanned barcode beeps when going out of the store.

I was talking with my daughter at a mall once and spaced out - we walked right out of a store carrying a dress still on the hanger. We realized it when we were halfway across the mall and had to go back and tell them we accidentally stole it and wanted to pay for it. I think it was about $20, they said it didn't beep because it wasn't a high enough value to be programmed into their system. -- Jakejake, specializing in finding new ways to humiliate myself. |

Did she mean to steal though, maybe she was just overwhelmed with her two kids and forgot to scan it or something? I stole a magazine the other day because it was underneath my purse in the kids seat area of a cart, i just forgot it was there because my daughter was crying and I was frazzled! I did go in and pay for it when I realized though!

The Uscan at my Meijer weighs everything after you scan it and it will announce very loudy, "unexpected item on the belt or bagging area" depending on which uscan you go to. How did it not notice the weight difference? I have had it do that to me when I dropped something very light on the belt. I probably would not have said anything to her, but I would have said something to one of the associates. They could have caught her as she was leaving. They can't actually do anything as long as they are in the store because the person can always say they were going to pay for it or I missed that one, but once they leave the store they can. If you were close enough behind to see what car she got into you were close enough behind that had you told someone they could have caught her. If nothing else they could have made a note of her and been watching her the next time she comes in. You are right there really is no excuse for her behavior and if she can afford a magazine she can put it back and pay for the stolen item. |

I'm sorry, but there's just no excuse. It's not like it's a necessity. People go without foofy laundry stuff all the time. I'd like to think I'd have said something, but like JakeJake said, I don't know if the shock would overwhelm me. And I, too, have accidentally walked out of a store with a dress on a hanger. I went back and gave it to the cashier and had no problems. I felt absolutely horrible though, thinking someone might think I stole it. |

That is just sad. I wonder what made her do that. All it does it jack up the prices for the rest of us. The way she was looking around though makes me think she doesn't steal often. I used to be involved with security and the more veteran shop lifters aren't as anxious. Maybe they just ran out of money for the week. Regardless it doesn't make it right. Sorry this is on your mind.
