The Wall Street Journal reports that because of bad weather in the south, the wholesale price of peanuts has skyrocketed from $450 a ton to $1,150 a ton. According to the article, "wholesale prices for big-selling Jif are going up 30% starting in November, while Peter Pan will raise prices as much as 24% in a couple weeks...Skippy [prices] are already 30% to 35% higher than a year ago. Kraft Foods Inc., which launched Planters peanut butter in June, is raising prices 40% on Oct. 31." I stopped at a Kroger which doubles up to .99 cents to pick up a couple of jars of Smart Balance Omega for 2.39 OOP after .75 coupons, and noted that prices on the name brands are already edging upward. Some were on sale at what is ordinarily regular price. We only use natural or semi-natural (Jif Natural) PB, without hydrogenated oil. I picked up a couple of 28oz jars for $5.80 each, and decided I am going to check Target and Walmart for a better price and later sell-by-date in the next day or two. My hope is to get at least a year's supply in my stockpile. |

I heard from a friend of mine that Costco has stopped carrying Jif PB due to the fact that the wholesale price was too high for them. Costco is now selling Skippy PB. Not sure if this is all stores or just regionally here in the Midwest. It makes me sad that it is increasing so much. Guess I need to stockpile more of it.

I just stocked up yesterday at WM on the Peter Pan reduced fat and it was the same price it had been. The expiration dates were January 2013.

DH told me yesterday that he had heard about the increase in prices. Just 2 of us so we don't eat more than a jar a month. I checked my inventory list and told him we're good, still have 11 jars. He just shook his head. He still doen't understand my stockpiling but he does like having things on hand and loves the savings. Think I'll try to pick up a few more jars if the price is right, it will make a good donation item for the holiday food drives.

My mom told me about this yesterday. My kids love PB but fortunately they also like almond butter. Right now I have two large containers of the Kirkland organic (Costco), hopefully that should last us awhile.
