Dry scalp?
I've had long hair for a couple years and Monday I chopped it off, its now really short, above my ears shot. Demi more in Ghost short. It looks cute but 3 days later my head started itching, actually had a friend make sure I didn't have lice! Its dandruff, she says its pretty bad. My entire body has been itching from dry skin due to the fall weather. How the heck do you moisturize your scalp?

I would love to know too! My hair is longer but I've always suffered from dry, itchy scalp. It's so bad sometimes that I can't hardly stand it. I've tried Head & Shoulders, an Aveda spray and also T-Gel (which stinks!!). I will def be following this thread to see if anyone has any suggestions!

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo works great and the conditioner also. I have used it in the past but can't afford it but it is worth the money if you can splurge on it.

I've only used it for a couple months, but Fructis Anti-Dandruff Dry Scalp has been working for me. And in my limited couponing experience, it seems like the q's and deals on it are plentiful. It doesn't seem to eliminate it completely, but it's much, much less. One other thing that's helped me a lot is, when I can afford it, to get a deep cleansing scalp treatment from a spa. What I've done is ask for spa gift cards for my bday and then use them to pay for it. |

I use Apple Cider Vinegar as a rinse and it makes a big difference. Here is the article I found about it. I also used the Olive Oil but it was a bit messy so I just use the vinegar. The Best Treatment for Dry Scalp | eHow.com |

This is a little out of the box, but my mother always used to add listerine to any shampoo for dandruff issues. It works.

I have super dry skin and I use scalp oil. I think I'm the only white girl I know who uses scalp oil.... I put it on my scalp before I go to bed, wake up, and shampoo. Make sure you really rinse the shampoo off the scalp since that could be causing irritation too. If it is dandruff caused by yeast rather than just dry skin, try some tea tree oil in your scalp oil or shampoo. Just test to make sure you aren't allergic to it before apply it all over your head. |

I've used Head and Shoulders dry scalp for years, but the past year it stopped working as well. I realized that what I had was actually seborrheic dermatitis. Here is a link about it: Seborrheic dermatitis - MayoClinic.com At first I thought I didn't have it because this is affected by your oil glands (sebum). I have always had really dry skin, but the symptoms match mine almost exactly. I have also been having this problem on my eyebrows and sides of my nose... I've been using extra strength head and shoulders (in the blue bottle) but might have to try some of these other ideas as well. Hope this may help.

Use extra virgin olive oil. Just warm it up and rub it into your scalp. Put a towel on your hair, wrap it for about a half hour then wash it out. Lather and rinse twice. It's an old remedy, but it should do the trick! |

Just wondering, any itch relief so far? The last couple years, I noticed more scalp itchiness year round... and love the Olive oil deep treatment, esp. for winter! I tracked my itchies to a sensitivity to standard shampoos, with all the foaming and detergents (thanks to sodium laureth sulfate and its derivatives.) That led me to try various eco (pricey) brands that kept me from itching. With those alternatives, I had to wash 2xs, and my hair looked kinda dead after a while, with a lot of flyaway hairs. I had used Nature's Gate Asian Pear (the worst, made my hair feel stripped) Aubrey (ok), and Shikai (ok.) Anyway, I ended up cutting my hair off as well. The eco-types of shampoos may work well for some, but I think I'm onto something this week that may help, and just in time for winter. I'm gonna gather my thoughts and start a new thread ![]()

I am still doing the olive oil each night before bed and washing with Head and Shoulders each morning. I have all but stopped using conditioner (maybe once per week) and am trying to allow my hair to air dry as much as possible so as to use less damaging heat on my scalp. So far, not only has the itch decreased but also the flakiness.

A hint on the conditioner...I rinse with a tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a big cup of water (then rinse with just plain water so there is no vinegar smell). I do not need conditioner at all. My hair is really thick and long, and if I don't do the vinegar, I can not get a pick thru it afterwards! and it rinses all the residues out (and extra soap).... altho I do not think it helps with dry scalp... What I did last winter is bought a bottle of TTO (tea tree oil-- u can get it at walmart near the vitamin section), and I added about 10-15 drops to a bottle of any (free ![]()

I wanted to let you know that you can actually purchase these clarifying treatments at Sally Beauty Supply. They come in a small package of crystals, you add warm water and follow the directions. I like to use an old hair coloring bottle for distribution. I think they are regular priced at 2.99/ 1 treatment at Sally. I have had the salon version and it seems to be the same thing. I find it near the deep individual conditioning treatments. i dont currently have one on hand but I want to say the brand name is ION something. As far as shampoo I really like the Lush Tricholimania (I am sure I butchered the spelling of that). It is a bar shampoo and pretty pricey but it soothes my scalp the way other shampoos wont and I believe my hair hold color better now too. |
