Food budget question

I have always thought DH and I were pretty frugal people when it comes to food but then I look at this board and see so many people making food budgets and saying they want to spend X per week or month. I just don't understand how people do this.

It is DH and I plus 4 cats and what we need every week varies. Sometimes we don't need much while other weeks we need cat food, litter and stuff for us. We make a list to buy what we need and then we buy it. I guess I don't understand how people make a food budget because doesn't buying vary from week to week? Some weeks I can spend $25.00 when others I can spend $100 it just depends on what we need and have. This week we spent $60.

We do use coupons when we can, shop sales and buy store brands to keep our bills down.

Yes, what you need will vary from week to week...so let's say you want to budget to spend $75 per week...on the weeks you spend $60, you now have $15 to "play" with on deals and start a stockpile...soon you will notice that you don't need this or that for 6 months and your $100 weeks will start to go away...your weekly "play" money goes up...or you can adjust your budget down and add to savings...it's so good to be in control of your money

=-}

Stockpiling is the best! I have a parrot and 2 cats. I always like to have an extra amount of food for all 3 pets in the house! As soon as there food starts to hit half way in the bag thats when I know Ill need to pick up some more food! Same with the cats cat litter. I also use Fresh Step which I type in my points online then when I get enough I get a coupon mailed to me for a free box of cat litter!!!

I've been wondering about this too. I know I spend way to much on stuff and feel so guilty when I read about the budgets on here b/c I should be doing better.

I think my biggest thing is I need to make menus and then stick to it.

!! compared to the people on here that have been doing this for years, everyone 'spends too much on stuff'

i have a goal of SOMEDAY being able to spend so much less on groceries than i do right now, cuz SOMEDAY i'll have more stuff stockpiled & that'll be realistic. until SOMEDAY comes, though i read everyone's budgets on here like a creepy money voyeur & i get excited that 'SOMEDAY that'll be me' vs 'wow!! i suck at this!!' like i used to

don't feel guilty, feel excited!! 'smore fun!!!

I budget 200 a month on anything other than gas and bills. I have been doing this for about six months and have found that I actually may need to lower my budget. I am usually only spending 100 a month on groceries for a family of four!

I give myself $100/wk. but I look at it on an annual basis. I'll calculate how many weeks I have left in the year and get a general idea of how much I have left to play with.

It works for me! Some weeks I spend a LOT and some weeks very little, but it all works out in the end.

I actually love reading everyones budgets. I don't really have one and spend WAY too much money on groceries. Hopefully I will have my stockpile built up again soon and get that budget way down and save all that money!!!
