| Flour, sugar etc. storage
I was wondering if anyone else does this.......hehehe... You know those big tins with the popcorn in them with the pretty pictures for Christmas? Could I store flour, sugar and other dry ingredients in those? Or do you think they would get moisture in them? Thanks!!!! |

I store my flour and sugar in the gallon size zip lock bags and then put it in a plastic tote. Not sure if you were planning to pour it directly into the container but you might try to put it in the zip lock bags first then store in the contiainer. I think it would work-as long as your not storing somewhere damp. I just keep mine in the cabinet and haven't had any trouble. hth!

Personally, I store mine in a ceramic canister set on my counter, then store the rest in the fridge. I use those colorful popcorn tins to corral my son's Legos.

I use Tupperware canisters to store it. They are air tight & I never have any issues.

I use 5 gallon plastic buckets (and a few smaller ones) that I got free from the bakery dept in a local grocery store. If I asked ahead of time, they would save the lids for them... sometimes they forgot so I'd have to get a lid from Walmart for it (they sell them in the hardware dept). I have a BUNCH of buckets I store sugar, oatmeal, beans, popcorn kernels, wheat, etc. to keep the bugs out. |

I asked at my bakery for one of those frosting buckets. I expected to pay something for it, but they gave it to me for free! It's a nice big size. I use it to store rice (it used to be cheap at Costco). This bucket seals really nicely.

I have sugars in walmart brand baggies. I hope they are good enough. I would LOVE to have a Tupperware set of canisters!!!! My mom has the old orange ones from many years back. I told her that is all I want when she passes . Everyone else can have everything else. Maybe after the holidays I can get some popcorn tins cheap.

I store our flour, sugar, etc. in the big coffee canisters. Make sure to wash and dry them out really well first, and label the outside. We've never had a problem.

Sometimes you can get nice storage buckets from Dairy Queen. Ask them for the ones they get their strawberries or buttercream in. Costco has smaller buckets in their bakery as well..

I would be concerned about moisture..and if you decided to use..like others..definitely put them in some other type of bag as if you're in an area that has any humidiity..the tins can rust and then you'd have wrecked your food..and also, I've had the pantry moths in two different states..and tins DO NOT keep them out..so any type of moths or the little mealie bugs things can get into any small crevice area..and again..once you get them going you're a breeding habititat...I've had them drill right through freezer zip locks and packaged goods from the store.... so I went and bought off from ebay (since the size was discontinued) the jumbo tupperware canisters..I had a few and purchased a motherlode and not have sealed stackable containers for all my dry goods..and I cook a lot so I have something like 12-16 jumbo ones and another dozen of smaller sizes for cocoa, brown rice, quinoa, etc... |

I use and love Tupperware Moduler mates.... They are clear so you can see when you are low and need to refill. plus they stack neatly and have labels. Sometimes you can find those old canisters at thrift stores or ebay super cheap.

Mine are stored in the huge white paint containers they have them at walmart and are a GOOD investment b/c the lids snap and seal tight and keep anything out. I buy my flour in large lots so it works as it holds alot at one time. Sugar- i bought some really cheap containers at the Container store for 1.99 with snap on lids and they work great. Yeast i buy in bulk and put in a ziplock container( not the bags) and store them in the freezer and when i need it i get out what i need and let warm to room temp while im prepping I bought some basket container like things also at the container store that stack on each other ( 6.99) to hold tons of stuff out of the way. I recycle old pickle jars, plastic containers everything i can. I have hundreds of various containers that work for so many different things.

Could you use those 2.5 gallon ice cream containers to store sugar and flour in? The ones with the lids? My Dad eats ice cream from those all the time. I had been thinking about those for my storage.

I used to collect tins. In the late 80's I got a couple great tin canister sets and I have used them ever since. I store my flour and my sugar in them, directly in the canisters (no plastic bags). I have never had any problem with bugs or moisture. I have lived in Ohio, New York, Connecticut, and Florida with them. If there was going to be a problem with bugs, it would have happened in CT where we lived in a high-rise apt. If there was going to be a problem with moisture, it would be here in FL. We're here 5 years, no problems. I still love tins but have not had any place to display them above the cabinets in my last 2 residences. I tried to sell my collection at my last yard sale, but they didn't sell. I don't know anything about selling on eBay but figured it would be too tedious & stressful to ship 100 tins to 100 different places, so I didn't bother. I'd pay my brother to eBay them, if he wasn't so far away. I couldn't just donate them - stuck them back up in the attic.

I scan thrift stores and yard sales, and have found many tupperware and rubbermaid containers where people are changing up the colors in their kitchens, and got them cheap! I even got a bunch from people downsizing their kitchens. I also got a bunch of those small and large decorative tins from my mother-in-law's home that are new but made to look like old food tins. I put everything in them! I usually put the matching food inside (raisins in the SunMaid tin, etc...), but if I need one for something else, my label maker works just fine on the front. They make the inside of my cabinet look pretty, too.

I will have to check out ebay. I wonder how pasta would do in those tins. I have several, okay 40, boxes of ronzonis spirals and would love to get them off the shelf and into something more managable and attractive. I will have to check out ebay.

Okay, I so did not think to aska local bakery and I am now kicking myself in the pants! I went to Wally World and bought the 1 gallon size Rubbermade containers. The lids screw on and work well for me. The mouth is big enough to get the measuring cup into too. |
