I Just left schnucks and paid the tax on my pre-coupon total. I believe the law in Missouri is to where you are chrged tax on your sub-total AFTER coupons. Because I have done $0.00 transactions in the past. Now, I have never done $0.00 transactions @ a grocery store. But I have paid .17 for $79.04 in groceries--thats no where near the tax amount for a nearly $80 purchase. I asked customer service (who looked younger than me & Im 24) and she seemed stumped so i didnt get a definitive answer. Has there been a change? Has anyone else encountered this recently? Now, the cashier did have to manually enter the cupons as they wouldnt scan so maybe that might make a difference.

I've been wondering the same thing. A couple of weeks ago I went into Schnucks to get the free weber seasonings. I had 10 q's and that was all I bought. My total was $0.00. The next week I went in to get some of the free beggin strips and some other items. My total was more than I had planned and I had no idea why. So i figured maybe I had to pay tax on the beggin strips and sure enough that's what it was. I did another transaction the next day with 8 bags of beggin strips all of which were free and my total was .75. I also asked my cashier and he was younger than me too and he said maybe i had to pay tax because it wasn't food it was pet supplies. But nothing has been confirmed other than I had to pay tax on the beggin strips.

Charging tax on an amount taken off by a coupon in Missouri is against the law. If you are getting charged tax on the amount taken off by a coupon it means their system is not up to par and usually there isn't anything they can do about it. There are only a small percentage of places that have this problem but it is still annoying when it happens. Just bring it to their attention that it is against the law and they may eventually fix the problem. Nick

I have one store in my town that charges tax on your before coupon total. This is the only store that does this. All the others, if my total merchandise is $10 before coupons and I pay with $10 worth of coupons, my new total will be 0. So the one store charging tax is doing this illegally? BTW, I live in MO.

Dollartree does this. I paid tax on the items that were free after coupons. I thought that was weird when they told me my total.. Maybe bc the manually punch in the amount of each coupon?! I'm in MO too.

Missouri has a smaller sales tax for food items and an additional one for non food items. As for Dollar Tree I was disappointed in their methods. They had to call a manager and hold up the line on .25 coupons.
