Tipping Commissary Baggers

Stemming from a small discussion in a previous thread I became intrigued...how much do you usually tip the commissary baggers? I honestly only tip between $2-3 bucks usually. The entire job -- bagging and bringing the bags to my car -- takes about 5 minutes. I think that's adequate.

I usually tip $3-5 depending on the size of the order. If my order takes up two of their pull carts, then I tip $5. I, too, would love to hear what other people have to say. I always wonder if I am undertipping!

I tip based on two factors- the pre-coupon total (the two carts was a good judge too) and the bagger's friendliness- I cannot stand getting grumpy baggers- they are there by their own choice. If they acknowledge my kids it helps their tip too.

I tip on pre-coupon value of my order (Just like I would tip in a restaurant on any pre-coupon amount of the bill).

If the orginal (pre-coupon) total is under $50 I usally give a $2 to $3 tip depending on the time it took and the number of bags.

If the original total is under $100, I usually give a $3 to $5 tip depending on the time and number of bags. (Always erring on the more generous side)

If the original total is over $100, the tip starts at $5 and goes up from there depending on time the order takes and the number of bags.

For those of us who use a lot of coupons, the scanning of the groceries and then the scanning of the coupons can eat up a lot of time for the baggers. It's not uncommon for the bagger to spend 5 minutes waiting for the cashier to go through the coupons and then for the person to pay. By the time the bagger gets back into the bagging queue, a good 15 minutes might have passed from the time he bagged just that one order. If that bagger only gets a $1 - $2 tip and has 4 tips like that for the hour, he's only made $4 - $8 for that hour. In my opinion, that's just not enough to cover their gas money nor their time considering they aren't paid a salary.

A lot of baggers have stopped showing up at our commissary because of the rising cost of gas and the small tip amounts. It just isn't worth their time to spend an hour in the 100 degree temperatures or standing out in the rain for $4 to $8 an hour. Can't say that I blame them. Don't think I'd be doing their jobs if I received a $1 to $2 tip for large order, either.

Yes, they have to wait for those coupons to all be scanned- especially annoying if you have a coupon-scrutinizer cashier who makes them take items out of the bags to verify that they were purchased. Yep- speaking from experience. That bagger got a nice tip (and probably avoided that cashier the next time).

Okay, here is the scoop! LOL My son is a bagger. He usually gets anywhere from $2 to $5 each time he takes out someone's groceries. No matter the size of the order. Some don't tip at all. So, I think most of you are giving about the right amount. And, my son says thank you on behalf of all the baggers out there. He is always grateful for any amount he is given. It pays his pop and snack bill for the day.

Oh, I'd have been steamed if I had to wait while that cashier was wanting items pulled from bags. It was her responsibility to look through the coupons at the beginning of the order when you handed them to her so she could be on the lookout for items. That's just ridiculous.

Good tipper, can't help it! Especially if it so hot outside like today. Sheesh, it is so much help!! I can get the car started and cooled off. Plus I usually buy a ton of stuff with cases and cases of soda.

I tip between 2 and 4 dollars. I get a lot of ladies who bag and take the time to not put bread on the bottom of the can goods like some teenagers I have at different stores.
I usually take my own groceries to the car too.

I also tip $2-3 each visit. Once in awhile if the bagger is nice and I have an extra buck I'll bump it to $4. I figure since it's just be right now, there aren't many groceries anyways!

I usually tip between $2-$4 and I have always wondered what other do so I am glad someone asked. I take in to consideration how much I spent and how many groceries I have as well. Usually it all fits into one cart. Also how well they listen to me. I like my cold things bagged in plastic and everything else in paper, however they actually only listen 50% of the time. (I do this as with a little one I can hurry up and put my cold stuff away and not worry so much about everything else and can attend to my child if need be.) It is aggravating so if they listen I tip on the higher side, also depends on the mood as well. Most don't even say thank you after you hand them the tip. Alot of times I take it out myself since I always have my daughter in the cart and have to take it out anyway and just plan to park near a shopping cart rack for easy return.

I usually tip between $3-5 dollars. If I'm doing a huge coupon trip, I do $5, if just a normal jaunt to the store, I do about $3. I never do less than $3.

I have sometimes given $6 if the order is HUGE and heavy.

Just like almost everyone here I tip $3-5 just depending on the load.

But I will say that I try to avoid the baggers by doing self check out if I have less than 30 items(the self check out limit here).

I give $3~$5 depending on my order size and if the bagger is nice. Some of the baggers at my commissary think $3 isn't enough. I tip the ones with an attitude $2.00 and refuse to let them bag me again. The nice ones know I will tip them $3 or more....

I think it depends on how much time it takes to bag the order - I used to bag groceries in high school and it paid minimum wage and we weren't allowed to take tips. So I think $10 a hour is more than adequate. I only go once a month though, so I usually have a HUGE order ($500 pre-coupon) with TONS of coupons (less than $100 post coupon) so I usually tip $10 - have tipped as much as $15 if they really help me load up the car (small car - lots of groceries - lots of work to pack it in)
