| I've never walked out with less than 30% off total bill . . . . . and 1 time 80% off the total - But, that's only after using my coupons, and in some cases, including 2 cartons of cigs (with no coupons). I suppose, although I've never, really calculated it, using coupons, excluding cigs, I probably save, on average, about 60%-80% off the total bill every time I shop.
When I consider the cost of fresh vegs, on-base and off, the price of fresh vegs, alone, save me about 20%-40%, compared to off-base veg prices. (I.E.: WD - broccoli, $.99/bunch(about 8oz), on-base - $1.19/lb; WalMart: lettuce - $2.09, base - $1.09; celery - $1.89 vs. $.99; nectarine - $.99/lb vs $.89/lb.)
I never, ever shop my commissary without coupons, and, I always plan ahead for which ones will give me the most return. Look for 'tearpads' that offer free stuff if you buy milk, bread, hotdogs, etc., and combine these with your coupons for the item you had to buy to get the 'free' thingy - or save them and use them later.
As previously stated, check your off-base sales. Milk on-base is $3.29/gal + 5% s/c = $3.46. Wags had on sale for $3.69(limit 2) and I had a $5/$20 Wags coupon. Short version - combined with other Wags sales, coupons, and $5/$20 coupon, milk cost me less then $3/gal. (Total bill was over $40, after all coupons paid $19.)
This is offered IMHO Only: WalMart has a mag called "All You" that I have read about on AFC, and just picked up my first (Aug) issue. Get It! Full of coupons.
EXAMPLE: p. 159 - 5-Kraft 'buy 3 Kraft products get 'item' free coupons. Here's what I'm going to do . . . 1st - go to Kool-Aid aisle and look for tear-pad ('$1/20' or 'buy-15-get-5-free', whatever). Get at least 15 pks of Kool-Aid (not single serve). Usually $.20/pk. Kool-Aid is a Kraft product.
2nd - p. 159 - Get all of 'Free' items listed. Each item will require 3 Kool-Aid packets.
3rd - At check-out: Put all of the 'Free' items togeather, and all of the Kool-Aid togeather, with all of the coupons.
4th - Inform your cashier - before she starts ringing things up - what your are doing and how to apply the coupons so she can write down the 'Free' item cost before it gets bagged and they have to dig for it.
5th - If there is a question about the Kool-Aid $/off tear-pad coupon, or the 'buy 15/5 free' coupon - explain . . . you are paying for these items and the '15/5' coupon you are paying for 15 and that is all you have to pay for to use all of the 'Free' coupons.
'Free' items are: Nabisco Wheat Thins; Kraft dressing (16oz.), Oscar Mayer hotdogs, Crystal Light, Kraft Singles. If all goes well, you should be able to get all of these, and the Kool-Aid for less than $2.
Good Luck. YMMV, depending on your commissary, how up-to-date their computer checkout system is, and how sticky they want to get and persistent you want to be. I will use it. No, you may Not use a coupon on any item you get for 'Free', so, please, don't try it. IMHO - I believe this is a fair an honest coupon use and will work. (I Do Not advocate, promote, support, or condone, coupon fraud and will report any such use. It hurts all of us that really do need to use them. Hope this helps at least one of you. |
