Medical Transcriptionist

Is anyone here a medical tramscriptionist? I am wanting to look into doing this and had some questions.

Has anyone done an online degree? If so was it legit?

Is it easy to get a job?

Thanks

I tried to do medical billing and coding online through AIU. Not what I expected. I live in Florida and the govt wouldnt give me much help financially. I did get a $1400 allowance from the military since my husband was in there. not anymore though. After the state deductions and military, I was expected to still pay or take out student loans in the amount of $15000 for the whole program which was 19 months long. Yes I did say $15,000. Just couldnt justify that amount for such a short program. If anyone has heard of anything better please let me know. I want so bad to do this but without taking out so much in loans and need to do it online.

I'm also looking into medical billing and coding, but through CFC. I spoke to a representative yesterday and was totally surprised with how much the 18 month program is--$26,000!! I still need to go through the financial aid process though. If I don't qualify, I probably won't be doing this because it's totally out of our budget. I hoping that because my boyfriend and I arn't married and we have a 15 month old that it'll help me qualify.

I work on the insurance end of things and I have many co workers who took medical coding and billing classes/certification and make just as much as I do. I had no insurance or billing experience before I started. I think I would look into that. I work from home taking phone calls, processing insurance claims, etc. I have a college degree but it doesn't have any bearing on what I do now. And if you want to pm me I can point you to the company's website. We have centers all over the country.

Do any of you have community colleges nearby? I have seen these classes listed in their catalogs and they are fairly inexpensive (compared to the prices I see mentioned). I think most of them are offered during the winter & summer breaks at the schools.

Hope this helps someone

I've had a bunch of people pm me to ask about how I got my job working from home. I'd thought I'd explain a little bit more about it and it might be more helpful then just getting where I work from.

I've worked for this health insurance company for about 2 years now. Prior to that I worked in customer serivce for a large celluar carrier (most stressful job every), as a community organizer, teacher, tax preparer.....anyways with my company you don't become what they call "virtual" that is working from home until you prove yourself in the office. I know in our are the other three major insurance carriers are doing that same thing. I just don't want people to expect to apply for a job thinking they can start working out from home. It usually doesn't work that way. Check with the insurance companies and other like companies in your area.

Some other things som people may want to look into is Live Ops and Alpine Access. They are both legit companies who have home based employees.

HTH and sorry I haven't had a chance to get back to everyone.

And you may qualify for grants or low interest loans or do work study to pay for it. I think this is one of the best ways to get additional training rather then some of the "certificate" programs.

Have you looked into the community colleges in the area? Typically, the online schools are VERY high in price. They are just out for the money. I'd check into FCCJ to see what they can offer.
