Cheap chicken?

In the Meijer mealbox there is a $1 off coupon for Meijer fresh Grade A whole chicken. It is on sale this week for .89 lb.
Does anyone know how much a whole chicken weighs?
I'm trying to figure out if this is a good deal or not. I don't cook with whole chickens, but would if the right deal came along!

Just like puglyduckling..

My mom usually buys a 3 to 5 lb chicken for roasting. She will always cook 2 at a time. She will only use her own chicken stock for soups and sauces.

However, she had been able to purchase the chickens for $.59 to $.69 a lb.
For your area the $.89 may be a good price. Just remember you will have bone and skin which adds to the weight of the bird.

If you prepare your own stock then purchase several and freeze the chickens. You can always cut the chicken into pieces. So check to see how much per lb the store wants for the split breasts, the thighs, wings and drumsticks. You may be ahead in dollars by cutting the chicken up yourself.

My mom will season the birds with butter, lemon and herbs up under the skin and cavity for extra flavor. Especially when you do them on the roisterrie (sp?) on the grill. This size would work well in a deep fryer, or for a smoker.

And there is nothing that smells more heavenly than the aroma of Chickens on the oven.
What time did you say is dinner?

reneav has posted more than 1 good deal
I was just a Meijers and the cost of the chickens ranged from about $3.50-$6.50. I bought two of the smaller ones for around $3.50 (or a little less) and used two coupons making them each about $2.50.
I have never tried to cook a whole chix before, so I will try tomorrow and if I like it, I will go get some more!

You can throw a whole chicken in the crockpot?! I have a very large one but never thought to do a chicken in it! Do you cook it on low, med. or high? And for how long? I like to do chicken breasts in the crock and just dump Italian dressing over it. yummy!

Dh makes "beer can chicken" all of the time. He puts the whole chicken on top of a beer can that is half-filled with beer, and puts it on the grill. It is delicious!!

The mealbox coupon is for $1 off one pound, i.e. 5 pounds = 5 coupons. That is what I did last week on a 5.5 pound chicken, but it was regular priced at $1.89. Unless they've changed the coupon in the past week that chicken is FREE with possible overage.

I read this coupon to mean it is $1 off a chicken AND the chicken is priced per pound. Has it changed?

I read it the same way. I read it to mean that the only chicken that you could use the coupon on is the whole chicken that is priced per pound. In the last two weeks I have had every cashier be so mean about my coupons that I couldn't even imagine trying to use a coupon for each pound.

Last week the cashier read every word on every SINGLE coupon even when several were the same. I had over twenty coupons easy and IT TOOK forever! All of the people in line behind me were getting so mad and it made me feel like I was doing something wrong. I finally asked the cashier if they had a problem with coupons because he was just being a jerk about it. He tried to argue with me over simple and obvious coupons too.

I'll admit I've only been to Meijer once in the past month (it is about 8 miles from my house and Kroger is so much closer!), but when I went I bought 5 bags of salty snacks - 5 mealbox coupons with the same SKU - and a 5.5 pound chicken - 5 mealbox coupons with the same SKU - and they went right on through.

I visited Meijer and used the coupons based on the "hot hot hot deals..." thread a few weeks ago HOT HOT HOT DEALS @ Meijer - Week Of 6-1-08!!!. So it worked for other people before I tried it.

Maybe it's the luck of the cashier!

We do the beer can chicken too...sometimes, instead of beer we use juice (usually a cranberry juice of some kind) it gives it a bit of a sweet flavor. We've used all sorts of different things in the can (because I'm not a fan of beer).

I usually throw mine in my 9x13 pan and put a little butter under the skin...shake on some salt, pepper, garlic powder & rosemary, cover it & throw it in the oven for 90 min or so and I think it's really yummy! I love rosemarry though.

And I think $2.50 is a pretty good price for a whole chicken...at least in my area.
