What a crappy day I had!!! Had to work this am, DH had day off with Eliza. Got a call on my cell at about 12 pm from a strange #. Listened to voicemail, it was DH frantic. Called # back. He was in an ambulance with DD on the way to the hospital. They were in his truck on the way to hallmark to get me a card when she started seizing. DH pulled over and called 911, she was still convulsing when they got there. The seizure lasted about 10 min. They took her right away to the ER, I met them there. By the time I got there she had a 104.9 temp.......She was laying there like a rag doll, not even moving. Her arms and legs were completly limp. I can honestly say that I have never been so scared in all of my life. My hands are shaking as I type this. Well after 3 doc's, a ton of nurses, about 100 tests, and a big old dose of motrin, it had been determined that DD had a Febrile seizure, which are seizures caused by a high fever. She has not been sick, this came on all of a sudden. When I got her up this AM she a business as usual. All her labs came back normal, they cant find any infection. They sent us home, and told us to watch her temp. And to follow up with the ped on monday. They are acting like this is no big deal, but I am totally freaking out!!!!!!! I am so scared to let her go to sleep, I have checked her temp like nine times since we have been home, I am going nuts! Eliza is fine! She is running around like a crazy wonman, like nothing ever happend....... This is so wierd! Anyone else's kids ever had these types of seizures before???? Thanks for the rant! see post 128

NO Google! They always make it sound worse then it is! I had a friend whos son had this. She complusively took his temp to make sure he didn't have a fever. They boy turned out just fine and out-grew this. I think it happens more when they are younger because they are less able to control thier own body temps well. Keep her full of water and out of the sun as much as possible. Poor baby!!!! Give her a big hug and kiss from her AFC family! My friend used these when she took her son into hot weather Amazon.com: Summer Infant Forehead Thermometer Strips: Baby Take it easy and THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO SMOKE I only say this because I love you!

My son had a Febrile seizure at 16 months. We also had an ambulance trip to the ER. Completely freaked me and DH out, but it turns out that it really isn't bad. We now treat every sign of fever with Tylenol or Motrin - no more waiting it out to let it do its job. We watch him with the fever to make sure it doesn't spike, as it is the spiking of the fever that causes the problem. I can guess how you're feeling, but your DD will act perfectly normal. I think it took DS about 1.5 days, as we were at the ER until about midnight and he was just exhausted. Kids have a 3-5% chance of having a Febrile Seizure. Once they have one, they have about a 40% chance of having another and that number is slightly higher if the first is before 18 months old. But, after age 5, the odds go pretty much to zero. They don't cause any brain damage, or any other seizure disorder. My ped said that if he has another and it's short, like 2 minutes or less, we can just bring him in for a sick appointment. But, if it's longer, we should take him to the ER again. As I said, he had his first at 16 months, which was July of 2005. He turned 4 a couple months ago and has never had another one. Hugs to you, as I know how freaked out you are!! BTW, as I told our story to my parents and my inlaws, it turns out that my brother had one at 18 months and DH's brother had one about 2 years old. Neither DH nor I had known that before.

The doctor's told me that febrile seizures were common as well. My son (now 27) had febrile seizures. After MUCH research I finally found out that the pertusis in the recent DPT shot that he had was what triggered them (imo). I did do a lot of research on this and found that others were claiming the seizures were related to the pertusis vaccination as well. Therefore, since that time my son's vaccinations omitted pertussis and were DT shots. Whenever my DS started with a temperature I was sure to give him a tepid bath and concentrated with putting water on the wrists and temples. This did help a lot with my DS. My DS had no symptoms and acted like all was fine after the seizure ended as well. Please follow up with your pediatrician!!! Last edited by bittacus; 07-04-2008 at 03:56 PM. Reason: spelling |

It's in their blood Therbel, mine always start to show symptoms at about 10:30 Friday night, or Saturday night. Now that our new Pediatrician has office hours on Saturday mornings, I don't freak out as much. I'll check & see if you're in the chat room later, Hugs! |

Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. Those are terrifying. My youngest son who is 3 had his first febrile seizure when he was only a few months old. That was so scary. He didn't outgrow them until after his 2nd birthday. I'm so glad to hear she's okay.

my daughter has had 3 seizures (none febrile though) we have gone the gammot of running tests and seeing neurologists. It IS scary and I too was afraid to let her sleep or be out of my sight. We are coming up on 'seizure time' again quickly-they seem to happen about every 6 months- and then we will be going to do more testing as they can't figure out why she's having them. Best thing to remember is do NOT hold her if/when she seizes. As hard as it is, immediately lay her down and stand back. I found myself wanting to hold her but Iknew if I did it could make the situation way worse as when seizes if it is a hard seize and being held bones could be broken. HUGS HUGS HUGS to you momma ....it IS rough and hard but it WILL be ok

My mom, my aunt, and my uncle all had epilepsy, so I have seen plenty of seizures, but it is 1,000,000,000 times more scary when it it your own kid! DH did a great job though!!! He did not freak out , he called 911 right away, while waiting he made sure her airway was clear. Poor thing started crying as soon as I got to the hospital. Say a little prayer for daddy too! |
