| ULTRASOUND- calcium on fetal abdomen
Hey guys, my friend is having #3 and the baby measured 2 weeks small and has a calcium buildup in the abdomen. Has anyone heard of this and the outcomes? I think everything will be fine in my heart of hearts, but I worry for her and I'd love to have peace of mind and maybe pass that on to her. They got her a specialist appointment really fast (2 days) , so that worries me somewhat...I know the peri's can get backed up on appointments. I am picking her kids up so she can go to the appointment so I will know tomorrow, but I'd love to get a little peace of mind before then. I think this happened on my twin pg board to a regular poster and it either turned out fine or the baby had Down's...I can't remember. I know the women who had 1 twin w/ Down's quit posting b/c she was so depressed, so it is not like I could ask her if it was her (or that I WOULD ask for that matter).

This isnt directly related to Downs syndrome... a lot of babies have calcuim deposits and are born absolutely healthy. However, babies with downs syndrome do commonly have the deposits. Several babies though are born with the deposits in their tummies and hearts and are perfectly normal and live happy healthy lives.

Oh I am a nerd through and through.. ... I actually have a minor in biomedical engineering.. the medical field has always fascinated me.. but I cant stand to see someone in pain so I could never be a doctor... I took several classes in college geared towards biomedical engineering and most of my research papers were on medical stuff... Just one of those things that I could spend hours reading about.. but never will pursue a career or anything in that area.. haha I wish your friend the best of luck... |

I'll let you know what she finds out tomorrow. I think it will turn out great, but I hate for anyone (esp. pregnant) to have to go through the stress of waiting.

Can I ask how old the mom to be is?? Is she at risk for a baby with down's syndrome (over 35)? I know it's hard not to think about it, but there is no use getting anxious over anything right now until you hear from the specialist! Please let us know how she makes out!

I think she's 32 or 33. I'll post if she finds anything out at the specialist today. I don't think they have a family history of Down's, though I know that family history is only part of it.

Ok, the just left the house to pick up their kids less than an hour ago. They were at the appt quite some time. They want to see them again in 2 weeks. The good news is the brain is developed normally so far. They say this is an unknown type thing- sometimes bad, sometimes just a mystery as to why it happens and nothing bad comes of it. So I'll get to keep her kids again in 2 weeks and for regular appointments too, so Eli and Jack are gonna love that at least. Sometimes I think when these things happen and nothing bad comes of it, it is a way to remind us how precious and fragile new life really is. I know my husband would not have been to every appointment with the 2nd viable pregnancy like he did with our first except it was twins, so I hope nothing comes of this but a renewed appreciation for the gift a new child is. Thank you all so much for the prayers! I will keep you posted.

Glad to hear it wasnt bad news.... It is something that has to be monitored, but apparently it is somewhat common... Hopefully this all turns out well.. and enjoy your playdates with the kids!! Thanks for the update
