| please help with birth control choices
My dh and i have decided that instead of trying for baby #4 right now that we are gonna take a break so i can concentrate on losing weight and getting healthy. i have pcos and have never had to take birth control. it took us a long time to concieve dd #1 and #2 so we just assumed i could not get pregnant and all of the sudden i was pregnant with dd #3 (not so bad we were thinking about getting more fertility treatments). but now i am working my butt off (literally) at dieting and actually beign sucessful at it, so i want to keep going. i am so afraid i am going to end up pregnant again that i have decided to take birth control. i am cluesless about what is out there. my dh heard about iuds and really wants me to get that. but i don't know whats involved with getting it and taking it out. i think i would like to try in about a year or two for another baby. any suggestions? thanks!

Yasmin is a birth control pill. It is also a water pill and therefore will not cause you to gain weight as the other bc pills do. This is one of a ton of bc pills I've been on. They are used on me to control my cycle. This out of all of them was the one I liked the most, but it didn't do what we needed it to do as far as my cycle is concerned. |

I have the mirena iud and love it. It can be inserted in the office in about 5 min. It felt like a bad cramp for just a minute. The first couple of months I had a lot of spotting but after that I hardly have a period. It was covered by insurance but I think it costs like $800. I was told that removing it can also be done in a regular office visit. I would recomend it to anyone!

| I've never had an IUD so I can't help ya there. I'd never been on birth control before, and after I had my DD I wanted a pill. They prescribed me about 3 different kinds, because my period was all out of whack. Now my gyno has me on Seasonique, which is a 3 month prescription pill. You only get one period in 3 months (the first prescription I went through I had breakthrough bleeding for about 3 days and that's it) and it's awesome. They JUST came out with a generic too, because the actual brand name is really expensive. I pay $30 for 3 months worth of birth control. |

I agree with razinbrn !! my daughters have been on this for almost three years with absolutly no problems! and no periods after 3-5 months of spotting. both have a boy and a girl and are not sure if they want any more. I think this needs to come out after 4 years and they can decide then. nanci

You're welcome! And that's the price we pay out of pocket, our insurance covers the rest. Generics cost me $10 a prescription on our insurance, so that's why I'm paying $30. You should look into it I LOVE it. |

I also have mirena and love. Had it put in right after my 6 week postpartum. It is effective immediately. No weight gain. No worry about remembering the pill and little or no period. I am trying to lose weight from baby #3. Cool thing is when you are ready for #4 you can have it taken out and don't have to wait a month for the pill to clear your system. You can conceive right away.

My insurance also covered the entire cost mainly because of my out of pocket expense goal had been met. But normally they would've covered 80% of the cost and it was round $850.

thanks ladies! i was really thinking about the iud, but i also remembered i have not had a period in about three years, so i may consider a pill or shot to regulate things a little bit. not that i am complaining about not hving a period or anything...

We were TTC, but then I had to have surgery so I wasn't allowed to get pregnant. Since mine was a temporary situation (6 months) I didn't want to have to get on BC only to get off of it in 6 month. My doctor also said that when you get off of BC you generally have to wait a few months in order to get everything back to normal to get preggers (not true for everyone, but true for me). We also have fertility issues so the likelihood of me getting preggers was slim to begin with. I decided to use OTC spermicidal film. We also use OTC lube (which kills like 75% of sperm). I track my periods and ovulation in order to use natural family planning, which I guess would be hard with PCOS. I know that I ovulate between day 14-16 every month so we avoid the week around that time. Between tracking ovulation and using the film I think we have it covered. I wouldn't recommend this method for anyone who is very fertile!

I used the depovera shot after my first baby and it work good they say you might gain a little weight. I never really noticed much. It makes your periods go away after a while. You get a shot every three month in the in back of hip area.

I was on the depo shot for about a year until we decided to to try for my DD. It took a relly long time, over a year, for my periods to regulate. I even had to go on the pill for 3 mos. to help regulate. So it took almost 2 years to concieve. Just something to think about if you are not going to want to wait.

Carefull with this. If your on Depo for too long you can have trouble getting pregnant when you stop. This happened to my hubby's ex-wife. I won't go into details, but definately research this option before using it. |

I had the Paraguard IUD (copper, not hormones). It is good for 10 years. I LOVED IT. When I had it removed to start TTC, we had to pay $100 (ouch) for the "surgical" procedure - which is little more than a pap smear...

I got the mirena tuesday, and if u didn't just have a baby u have to wait until u have ur period to have it put in. So far I like it- it was like getting a pap.

| My doc said usually you have to wait until your period comes back but she said it is ok if we don't. I had just had my DD 7 weeks before and hadn't gotten the period back yet and I had one put in.

Yes, the only thing to be aware of with any IUD is the risk of sterilization, so if you want any more kids, or you're not sure, you probably shouldn't get an IUD. This is from my ob/gyn.

I HAD THE IUD I had it taken out b/c after almost 2 yrs with no period I was bleeding 3 weeks out of the month...irregular bleeding is a side effect...And I was also having HORRIBLE CRAMPS...I had NEVER had cramps before and they became so bad that I couldn't pick my son up. I got it put in at my 6 week check up for him. It just wasn't worth it to me anymore to keep it in...Some people LOVE IT some don't you just have to find out what works for you. Good luck..

I am also on the Seasonique and love it. Have been on it for almost a year and a half now. Even when the three months are up and its time for your period, its very very light. No pain and non cramps. I am on the generic form which is really cheap with our insurance. We pay $20 every 3 months. For me, no side effects and no weight gain.
