| Swollen/twisted/sprained ankle? please read!
My 6 yr old and I were outside playing 'soccer' (actually just kicking the ball back and forth and chasing it). Well, he stumbled over the ball/curb -- I could see his ankle twist as he fell on it. He has been on the couch with ice on the ankle for 30 minutes. He says it still hurts -- same amt as when we came in. It looks a bit swollen. And he just tried to put weight on it -- and said it hurt. He didn't stand longer than 1 sec. Do you go to the doctor for this? I don't mind taking him-- just wonder if there is anything they can do. And the ped is closed.... it's 5pm -- otherwise I'd call and ask them.

Keep him off his feet for an hour and keep the ice on it. Also, give him some tylenol. If it was broke it would be all swollen and black and blue right now. I fell on some ice the other day and twisted my ankle on the way down. I feel alot better now, he will be sore, but my guess is he pull the muscle in the ankle or sprained it. No biggie, the doctor will prolly not do much, because he is a kid!!! Hope this helps... Hugs and kiss his boo boo for me!!!

Thanks! I just gave him some kid ibuprofin and keeping ice on it. It isn't black/blue -- I don't believe it is broken.

A twisted or sprained ankle can be pretty rough and slow to heal. It may not be a bad enough twist to need support, but it might. ERs take so long an you are exposed to so much. It might be if he has to be seen a good Urgent Care can handle it. Hope all goes well.

Yeah, it's more than likely a sprain. Keep his ankle elevated with ice on it and then see how well he does in the morning. He could take an anti inflammatory like Advil or Motrin for pain. I would call the doctor in the morning just to let them know. They will more than likely have more suggestions for you. Now, if you notice tonight that his toes are discolored or that the swelling has increased or he is in an extreme amount of pain then I would call the doctor asap. The good thing about kids and sprains is that they heal ALOT faster than adults. Hopefully, he will be out again by the weekend.

When I first saw the title of this thread and that you were the op, Lyndaslp, I thought, "Oh no. She's been dashing out into the night in her white pjs again confronting the evil lurking without."

Definitely elevate (make sure the ankle is actually above his heart... or it really does no good)... and ice and keep him off of it. See how it is in the morning. If he still cant bear weight or it swells or becomes discolored, I would take him to the peditrician. Whether it is sprained/twisted/broken... it isnt sooo bad that he cant wait till in the morning as long as the pain isnt unbearable for him. One thing to monitor is if he has feeling and circulation in the toes... makes sure they dont turn bluish and he can still feel you squeeze them.... This advice is coming from the kid who didnt "complain" enough to my mom about the broken wrist (I was 6.. she waited three days to take me to the ER.. HAHA) or the chipped ankle (I was 8... she waited 4 days)... or any other mishap I had.. HAHAHA... I was always the difficult child... Trust me they all heal..... and when he is older it will be a nice lil story to tell Hope he feels better soon... |

Lynda, I recall this happening to me when I was about 7. I was hanging from the top bar of my swing set and my hands slipped. I came down hard on my right foot and twisted my ankle, real bad. It hurt so much I couldn't put any weight on it for two days. It did swell but never really bruised. I would continue to do what you are doing, elevate the foot, ice for 20 on/20 off and ibuprofen. If he is still not able to put weight on it by tomorrow, I would just take him to the ped. HTH and I hope your little guys feels better real soon!

Update: The ankle was kept elevated. My son was hesitant to put any weight on it. He kept is resting on a chair during dinner. He complained about the pain during dinner. DH started to carry him upstairs to bed, but DS asked to be sat on the floor so he could get this 'cool toy' to take upstairs. DS finds the toy and says, "Hey.. check this out Mom! Watch how it shines in the dark!" Stands up and proceeds to walk upstairs unassisted and with no complaints. DH & I just -- I am sure his ankle did hurt... but I think he played it out a bit!

Well good to see it is better... keep an eye on it for swelling though... just in case... May have been a bit of a chicken to put weight on it since it hurt after the initial injury.... but nonetheless a lil pampering never hurt anyone.. haha.. |

Glad to hear that he is feeling better. This brought back memories of my bad sprain last year in PE class.

A break does not necessarily turn black and blue. My son broke both elbows and neither one was black and blue or even looked different! He broke the first one riding on his scooter and the second one running around the house in his socks. We had no idea they were broken, but ended up going to the dr. after 3 days of complaining. Boy did we feel bad for not taking action sooner!

My mom shares your pain on that one.... None of my breaks ever bruised really badly.. and I rarely complained about it.. I would say oh it kind of hurts in the same sentence and manner as asking for a bowl of ice cream. It never looked that bad... but usually after a few days of me saying it was bothering me that was enough to trigger the visit to the ER... The funny part when I chipped the bone in my ankle... It looked fine though when I ran I was limping quite a bit and there was a decent amount of swelling.. Well I go into the ER.. and the doctors comment to my mom. There is no way there is a break, chip, or anything more than a minor bruise if she is running around like this.. Boy oh boy did he change his tone after the xray.. I did indeed chip the bone.. hehe... It is amazing how some kids just never feel the effect of a broken bone. The story of the broken wrist was much of the same. I just didnt complain. The only reason they took me in... I wouldn't play with my toys with that hand.. so they knew something was up... I wasnt not using it.. but wasnt overly using it either.... Sure enough had a nice break in the wrist... Trust me my mom has gotten all kinds of grief over it.. but I know that if it was something life threatening I would have been in that ER in a matter of minutes.... |

Glad he was able to walk on it, because I was just going to tell you that his ankle doesn't have to be black n blue for it to be broken, my grandson 2 weeks ago, was running in school fell and couldn't get up so they took him to the nurses office looked at his ankle, no swelling or black n blue yet, then my grandson kept saying there is something wrong he was in a lot of pain to, so his dad took him to the ER needless to say his ankle was broken in two places, they said it was a bad break, in a cast for 6 weeks, if it doesn't mend right then he needs surgery, because its right by his growth plate they said...has to keep in real still no bumping the cast at all..he is 13yrs old....so its good your son is walking on it...things happen so fast...Glad he's o.k. but please just watch it...

| There was no swelling this morning. And when he was trying to milk sympathy from us, he walked just fine. Off to school he went. I went into school at 10am to volunteer in the library. There was an author visiting and my son & his class were in there. Well, when the author was done talking to the children and they were lining up to leave, my son bee-lined it to me in tears. He was in pain. I signed him out early, brought him home, ankle was now a bit swollen. He rested it until we could get to the doctor. Doc says "might be fracture? might be torn/pulled ligament?" DH & I are to ignore it -- unless DS brings it up... and see how he is in a couple days. If Friday morning he still says he is in tons of pain, then the doc will send us to an ortopedist for x-rays. Thanks for asking!

Maybe he needed more mommy than nurse. TLC goes a long way. I'm glad he's ok.
