Have any of you ever known someone who was a heavy drinker and they've died from complications? Liver? and how many years were they a heavy drinker? |

I'm worried about someone I know. I think they have liver damage. That person has lost weight, loss of appetite, insominia. Drinks every day.

My last boss died at 42 years old from acute liver failure. He had been drinking very heavily for approximately 1 year and a moderate social drinker of 1-2 coctails, 2-3 times a week, before that. It was really ugly and really fast-

My uncle drank for over 50 years.. His doctor said that if he stopped drinking he'd be more likely to die than if he kept drinking. He did stop cold turkey 3 months ago. He said he got sick of it.. After 50 years he finally got sick of it. i had a cousin who said if he had one more drink of alcohol he would die. The next day a friend found him on his balcony dead. I've assumed it was from alcohol but it could have been a suicide and my family just didn't want us to know.

| Do you mind telling me what he looked like physically? Did he look pale at times and no energy?

My granddad died from drinking to much. He was a very lonely man. He had pushed his family way from being so mean. His grand kids didn't want anything to do with him. He was from the old school that he believe that woman and children should be seen and not heard unless spoken to. I didn't have anything to do with him from the time I was 12 until his death, because he did things to me and I didn't want it to continue. But no one knew he was dieing until it was to late. My aunt helped him get his affairs in order and did his will. If he were still alive today my children would not be any where around him. ( i know to some of you this may sound harsh but when he did to me as a child, no child should have to go through it). And the thought would always be in my head (even though my kids have been taught) like where are they what are they doing. |

Jaundice(yellowing of the skin) can be a serious sign of liver damage.

Crosscountrysoccermom(that's alot to type )Alcholism can lead to liver and/or pancreatic problems. Either is a horrible thing to live with or die from. As a nurse I've seen alot of these patients usually in bad shape. The question you asked about how many years drinking in relevent to the person, everyone's body handles toxins differently. You can suggest a visit to the doctor, just remember people don't always want your advice or help and even though you are trying to help it may seem that way to them. So be careful. Good luck. Timmsa Sounds like you had to grow up too young. Sorry for that. |

So yes, they can turn yellow. Sometimes it's just barely there, sometimes it is more visible. The more visible, the faster they need to get their behinds to the hospital. A couple years back, my husband was having some intestinal issues, had been on/off Sporanox (an anti-fungal) for 18 months. His podiatrist asked me if I was trying to mess with his liver and changed him to Lamisil. He turned yellow with Lamisil. His body didn't metabolize it well. We took him to the hospital for the intestinal issue, but in the hospital lighting, you could see the yellow. At home, I couldn't. And I was about ready to slap him silly when he told me that his urine had been turning a brownish color. Think color of light molasses. That's another sign, b/c the body is having trouble eliminating bilirubin, etc. Della

thanks, yes i did have to grow up way to young, that is why I am the way I am with my kids. If i did have the bad stuff that my kids have done, I would be sporting bruises. Also as a child abuse in every sense of the word. I carry scars on my body as the proof. Sorry didn't mean to high jack your post. |

my uncle in his early 50's doc said he was 1 day away from dyin last month! Spent 2 weeks in patient and has stopped drinking. He was a whiskey guy at least a btl a day for 25 or so years. Plus a very heavy smoker has to have an Iv at home and is diabetic~ He was very grey and lost weight when he started to get sick. Also my aunt found out she had brest cancer lasted about 3 months age 43 she drank 4 5ths of vodka a day since I can remember. Wow my medical family history is a disaster!!! |

When you say "grey", do you mean pale, lips an off color?
