Ok, long story- will try to make it brief. I put on a lot of weight in a short time frame- like 23 pounds in 4-5 weeks. Until then I weighed 125, dieted and dropped to 119- then jumped up to 142. I was alarmed but went to the doctor thinking I might have underactive thyroid. I also have been suffering migraines for about 8 years. I have been VERY tired and have been sooo moody especially around my periods that i hate myself. I went to the doc, they ran a bunch of tests and I was told I have Insulin Resistance (not happy about this as it is harder to lose weight). I am not at much higher risk for type II diabetes- my grandmother died at 66 due to complications from diabetes. THey put me on metformin and I had a reaction and can no longer take it. But had to go for more blood tests and was told over the phone "everything came back fine, watch diet and exercise to get a hold on IR and PCOS". I told her I did not have PCOS to which she said I did- well, that was the first I had heard of my being told I had it. This was crushing. There is no cure. Symptoms can include weight gain, skin tags, dark coloring of the skin, and male patterened baldness. mood swings, etc. I am really upset. I can not sleep, I have had anxiety attacks. I feel like no one understands how this is affecting me- my hubby nor my family seem interested in what all of it means for me. I am angry. I am not very over weight, and have lost a few pounds. I am 5'2 and weigh now 135 pounds. I cry when I try on clothes as nothing fits me- I have alwyas had self body issues. I have always thought of purging after eating- even when I was thin by societies thoughts- but never did. Of course I think of it more now.....but haven't. I will seek out another doctor and hopefully have MORE PROFESSIONAL council. Any thoughts, prayers,a dn or advice from any of you, especially if you suffer from either one or both of these are appreciated. I know I am throwing out a lot of personal thoughts- I guess I have always been this way- but now I am just at a loss. THANK YOU! Feel free to PM me if you prefer!

{{hugs}} I know its not easy. I am just wondering if they are ruling out PCOS based on the presence of IR? Did you undergo vaginal UTZ? Usually, PCOS is found out while doing vaginal UTZ where the ovaries are enlarged and shows increased number of smaller follicles around the periphery. How is your mentrual history? PCOS is usually characterized by anovulation shown by irregular menses or absence of menses. This is aside from other symptoms related to hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenism. I suggest you seek GYN consult if a vaginal UTZ hasn't been done yet and show whether you really have PCOS or not. If it turns out positive, the GYN can work closely with the endocrinologist to make a treatment plan for you. Meanwhile, take it easy for now and look for a top notch GYN if you don't have one. It will make a lot of difference in your treatment if you are comfortable with your AMD who can patiently explain to you everything you need/want to know. Keep us posted. Be proactive, find a support group, if necessary. You can do it!

assume this diagnosis was from gyn...otherwise, get to gyn not sure what else they can do, but hormones have got to be considered Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Symptoms, Cause, and Treatment

I was dx with PCOS after trying to conceive for 6 months with only one ovulation. I have never had an ultrasound, I was dx by bloodwork. I am not the typical PCOS'er. I am overweight but not obese (about 20 pounds) but I dont have excess facial or body hair and I do ovulate (about every other month). I do still have problems with acne. After being put on metformin I saw the weight beginning to come off, the acne clearing and I got pregnant! It is a hard disease for people who dont have it to understand, especially the trouble with losing weight part (exercise and you will lose the weight everyone says, do weight watchers it will help...... NOT SO MUCH!). Please feel free to PM me any time, especially when you are feeling down. I know exactly how you feel |

I have always had horrible periods- I do have them but they are very heavy....I will skip the gross stuff. BUt I was only seen by and endocrinologist- not a GYN. This was all solely based on hormones- bloodwork etc. I have to get my DD to scholl and taking DS to get the H1N1 vaccine- will write more and PM you guys- thanks for the support. I just feel like in my little world no one gets it. REally depressed, and tehn I want to eat- but am really trying hard. Hubby says , well it says diet and exercise- I have not seen you do that. I have been watching my food consumption and making healthier decisions. However, I think I am so saddened by the diagnosis that I am feeling sorry for myself, very tired and have not exercised- I now I need to , just frustrating!

i have pcos, i take thyroid meds and i used to have to take metformin until a lost a bunch of weight and no longer need it. the metformin made me so stinking sick fo rthe first few weeks i took it, but after a feww weeks i felt fine taking it. it really does help you lose weight. i also take a med for the facial hair, when i am not pregnant. the good news is if you you do exercise the excess male hormones you posess makes it easier to gain lean muscle. most drs prescribe birth control, and my firnd swears by and herbal program she started just for pcos, but i haven't looked into that much at all.

I can not take any form of birth control nor can I take Metformin. MY DH and I got in an argument about all of the medical issues last night. Ifeel he just does not understand how I feel, nor do I feel he is trying to understand. It is frustrating....I still haven't cut out Sunday's inserts- been too lazy. It truly is affecting my sleep- and that adds to stress. UGGH! Thanks to all of you for your feedback and willingness to listen/give advice and kind words- you do not know how much I truly appreciate it all!

I know how frustrating it is when other people think, well....try diet and exercise and that will cure it! DUH???!! you'd wish it was that easy but we know its not. Is that your DD in your avatar? DS thinks she is a QTpie Your best option is to be proactive, deal with your problem head on. If you find a support group then it will be better for you knowing other people can relate to what you're feeling and not just think you're exaggerating your symptoms. Is your AMD sympathetic and answers all your questions? Does he/she give you assurance? It helps a lot to find an AMD that listens to you rather than one who doesn't even listen to your present concerns but treats the "chart", if ykwim? You're in my thoughts. Keep your chin up, all is not lost.
