My head is throbbing when I stand up or bend over

My headache symptom just started today. All morning, every time I bend over or stand up after sitting awhile, my head starts throbbing in pain. If I stand there a minute, it gets worse, peaks, then slowly goes away within 2 minutes. I was trying to re-organize my cleaning supplies closet earlier today, which required lots of bending & squatting, when I really noticed the problem. Now that I'm at work, the problem happens whenever I get up from my desk.

Yesterday, I felt good and did not have a headache for the first time in a long time. Before that, I had a head cold for about two weeks which was mostly in my sinuses - stuffed up nose and crusty eyes (that's the only gross part). I had been taking Target-brand Tylenol and using eyedrops about once a day for about the last 2 weeks. Yesterday and today, I took no Tylenol.

I Googled 'head throbbing upon standing' and found a little info. Mostly blood-pressure and/or exercise related. Most of the stories don't exactly match mine because their ears area also ringing and mine aren't, and most have had their symptoms for a long time.

I am 40 years old and fairly fit. I'm a healthy weight and I ran 4 miles before work this morning. 'Check your blood pressure' is the first thing DH said too, so I just ran up to CVS to check my pressure. (The system is down at work anyway -- they kicked me off for the next hour.)

My blood pressure is usually low, and today it was as follows:
Systolic = 93
Diastolic = 63
Pulse = 54

The machine says Normal =
Systolic below 120
Diastolic below 80
Pulse : no normal listed for pulse.

I am drinking a diet soda now because one website said I could be dehydrated. I've been dehydrated before and never had this particular symptom.

Any Ideas on what could be causing this? Could it be continuing sinus symptoms from the cold? What eles?

Thanks!

I do suffer from migraines, so that is a good guess.

My migraines are headaches that throb on only one side of my head, and they last for a few days, not a few minutes, unfortunately.

You sound like I get and I am anemic. Any chance of that? Do you get much iron in your diet?

Sounds like it could be a form of migraines, but also it does sound like dehydration. Generally when some one is dehydrated though their pulse will be more elevated.

I think you might a little modest in exactly how fit you are.

I would switch to a light sports drink like propel or water. Diet soda is not a good drink for hydrating.

If it continues I'd seek your doctor, only so they can do an exam, which might be helpful in determining dehydrations vs another issue?

Is your heart rate usually low? Do you know what your normal is??

Anemia usually presents with more tiredness, and sluggish. Its a gradual thing, usually not a sudden thing.

Thanks for the info everyone!

I guess it is possible I'm not getting enough iron, and possible I'm anemic - my sister was back in high school. I think I will really try harder to take my multi-vitamin every day, 'cause I've gotten away from that habit. I dont' really know much about anemia, but I'll Google that next.

I usually use the color of urine as a gauge for if I'm dehydrated. Good advice to try a sports drink -- and easy enough since we're always stocked up on that for DH!

I don't really know my regular pulse, since when they take my blood pressure at the doctor, they don't usually say anything about my pulse. I think in the 50's probably is normal for me though.

I too suffer from migraines and that could be a possibility. Sometimes low blood pressure can make you feel pretty lousy too.
I agree about switching to water or propel. Soda actually dehydrates you. I have read all kinds of tips on headaches and whatnot. Try drinking a full glass of water and laying down for about 20 min. Good luck and keep us posted. Hope you feel better.

Hi Laura.. maybe, just maybe.. you're ...
Little Jimmy's & Michael's wish perhaps? J/K my friend. I just left a comment on your blog then I chanced upon this post so I said to myself.. let me give her a post birthday fun comment. So.. could it be?!?

Kidding aside, I do hope you feel better. Its no fun feeling the way you feel. Oh.. I love your BP readings. I have high BP, taking meds, and I have to take it easy after I take them. There are lots of good advice from the other posters. Take care.

It sounds to me like you might have orthostatic hypotension. Headaches are a common symptom of this. Low blood volume causes orthostatic hypotension which can be caused by anemia or dehydration. I have had patients with this before and sometimes the doctor has them on a med called ProAmitine. Take care of yourself and I really hope you feel better soon and can get this figured out

there's a lot of possibilities but the most likely and should be ruled out first is untreated (or maybe resistant) sinus infection. If you didn't take any antibiotics or the ones prescribed did not kill the bacteria, it is best to ask your PMD on this. if infection is present, the appropriate antibiotics taken as prescribed may get rid of the infection. there are cases of recurring sinus infections where culture and sensitivity tests (phlegm or any nasal secretions, if any) are done in order to pick out the best antibiotic that will kill the organism causing the infection.

if symptoms persists, your primary may request for more diagnostic tests.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Pam, you are so funny! I got your note too. It looks like we have mirror-image families in different states. It's uncanny.

I'm already feeling a little better; thanks for everyone's well wishes. You are all so kind!

I drank a liter of Powerade, took my vitamins, and took it easy. I rested well last night, and the problem is gone this morning.

I may still see the doctor for lingering sore throat. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

I agree with mandarn. Orthostatic hypotension means that your blood pressure is generally fine while you're lying down, then drops when you sit or stand up. Lots of times people complain of dizziness when they stand up, as well as a throbbing headache and/or "seeing spots." As the blood pressure normalizes, the headache and spots go away. If your blood pressure is 93 systolic with you sitting down, I'll bet it's significantly lower when you stand up, especially if you've been squatting or sitting for a while. Orthostatic hypotension can be a symptom of dehydration, more than likely it's because you've been fighting a sinus infection for a while and your body is just adjusting. FYI, normal pulse rate for adults is 60-100. It is normal for it to be slower in a very physically fit individual. Usually, the pulse does increase when you're dehydrated, because the heart is trying to offset the fact that your BP is low. But it takes a lot to become *really* dehydrated. Just keep trying to drink as much water as you can. Hope you feel better soon!

My symptoms just went away on their own after about a day. I think it was the tail end of whatever 'bug' I had. No worries!

It was just odd as I've had plenty of colds & viruses in my past and never had my head hurt only upon standing.

Thanks everyone!

Sounds like a sinus headache. Drink plenty of fluids (i.e., water). Try Aleve (naproxen sodium).
I usually heat up a hot rice bag and lay it on my head for some instant relief. Steam also helps.

Your blood pressure is perfect. However when you stand or bend you could be having what is called orthostatic changes in BP. If you are dehydrated the diet soda was not the best idea because the large amounts of sodium can actually make it worse. Your best choices would be a sports drink or just regular water. If it persists SEE A DOCTOR. I hope you feel better
