Has anyone ever had pre-eclampsia?

When I was pregnant with my first child I had pre-eclampsia so severe that they were just praying I would make it to 36 weeks because if not they couldn't deliver me in my home town and would have to medi-vac me out. The last I looked at the scales I had gained 80 pds from all of the fluid retention. It was awful. I cried so much because of it. I was allowed to get off of the couch and pee, shower and that was basically it. If I wanted to go to the store I had to be wheel chairs around because they didn't want me to even stand in line I was so sick. It was just the worst experience ever. When I got pregnant with baby #2 I asked if I would get this again and they said it was rare that it would happen again. Baby #2 and #3 came and went and no problems. Well here I am with baby #4 and only about 15 weeks along or so they think and my fingers are already so swollen that my rings won't come off. My legs are extremely tight feeling from them already retaining fluids. I feel like it's to early for this to be happening to me again and it scares me to death. If anyone has ever had this can you tell me when you first started to notice the swelling. I can't remember whenI did wth my 1st pregnant. I just know I was on bedrest the last 3 months. Also if this has ever happened to you did you ever have it happen again in another pregnancy. I just keep praying that this is not happening to me again because I dont know what I will do if it does.

I only have one child, so I don't know about it happening again....... I had high BP in the beginning of my pregnanacy ( weeks 10-20) and the OBGYN told me that it was too early to be pre eclampsia..... After week 20 my PB was fine, no swelling until the last 5 or 6 weeks.
Good luck!

I had pre-enclampsia with my daughter, but i was about 36 weeks along, and my doctor induced me right away. I started experiencing swelling about 35 weeks. Sorry, I'm not much help on it.

You are too early in your pregnancy to be pre-eclamptic.

Is it espcially hot where you are? You have increased blood volume during pregnancy and heat just doesn't help!

Nope not hot in fact it's been rather cool that we are wearing capri's because it's chilly. AC off and open windows.

I did go to the dr's today and because i have a history of it they are gong to keep an eye on things. This is my 4th pregnancy so I knwo that it's not because of increased blood volume. I didn't have this with my 2nd or 3rd child. I've already started to gain weight and it's not from eating to much because my regular clothes are still fitting me so if it were due to eating to mucyh I would have outgrown my clothes and not be able to fit into them. I know that I don't have it as of yet I just have this feeling i"m heading towards it again.

I have no useful info towards pre eclampsia but when I had my third I retained water rather quick. I couldn't wear my rings after 2 months. (still can't) I would just say that you need to rest and take it easy for a couple days and hopefully you will feel better soon. At least they know you have a history and they are watching for it.

I was diagnosed late with Gestational diabetes. I don't know if that could cause anything that you are feeling, but I had to cut out carbs. and check blood pressure for the last 2 months or so.

Wish I had more useful info for you.

I had it with my first baby and the second pregnancy was fine about 4 years later. However when I had my third I didn't have pre-eclamysia but had impaired uterine growth from stress and being on my feet to much it caused swelling also (10 years later). Just drink lots of water in case its due to sodium or water retention and keep your feet elevated as much as possible. 1st baby bed rest for 6 weeks and 3rd baby for almost 10 weeks. Please take care and be careful.

Hi!

I don't have any answers for you, but I can tell you that I know where you are coming from. I am currently on a week of bedrest because of my high BP and other pre-e like symptoms. Basically, I have everything but the protein in my urine. My doc put me on aldomet (BP meds) and bedrest until I go back next week to be rechecked. He said to prepare for the possibility of long term bedrest.....I am so stressed and worried about this, so I can identify with your anxiety!

Oh....I'm 20 weeks along in my 3rd PG. Problems started Tuesday and came on very suddently. The red flags for me was headaches, blurry vision and dizziness. Swelling isn't that bad right now.

Trust me you are not too early in your pregnancy for pre-clampsia. I know from experience -my daughter had it 2 times in a row and the first time she started having systems around 15 wks. Her dr told her it was very rare to get it twice in a row. She changed drs after the first pregnancy and the new dr told her it was not rare at all to have it over and over. Her new dr has forbid to get pregnant again.
Will add both of you ladies to my prayers.

I had it with my third. Late in pregnancy. Swelling was bad. I was gaining 5lbs a day from it. Not to mention the headaches, dizziness and other symptoms. Had it for several weeks but Dr. was in denial that I had it and wanted me to wait to deliver until he got back from vacation. Luckily he sent me to another Dr. while he was gone and she had me deliver immediately. She was surprised he didn't deliver because blood pressure was so high and getting higher.
It usually occurs after 20 weeks but you can get it earlier.
Make sure you rest and call the dr.

Thank you. I went to the dr's last week and there was a new mid wife there that I had never encountered before. AT first she blew me off but when I told her my experience with it 8 years ago she started to take me seriously and said that they would monitor me more closely. My BP was fine this visit but the time before that it was high. I gained more weight ina month than what I should have but I knew it was water weight because even though my pants dont button they all fit everywhere else. Had I of gained fat they wouldn't have. I wish that they would listen to me though because I know my body best and when I said my legs are swollen and tight feeling I would hope that they would believe me.

Pe

You are NOT too early to have PE!!! I have had Pe with ALL of my pregnancies. 3 of them. The Worst being the second baby which I started becoming PE about 16 weeks and was already in the hospital at about 19-20 weeks. I lost that baby at about 26 weeks-stillborn. It is NOT too early to do something and have bed rest. The earlier your symptoms start, the harder it is to control and the more problems you might have. I don't wish this on you. I don't want to scare you either, but just from my experience, it can happen and you can have bad results. My placenta did not deliver the blood well cause of the PE and my son died after spending about 3 weeks in bedrest at the hospital. Rest as much as you can, and get a specialist who works with high risk pregnancies who will work with you carefully. I think this is nothing to sit on and wonder about. You can also be preeclamptic without ALL the symptoms. You just have to have some. Also there is a website, preeclampsia.org that will give you lots of info. I hope this helps. I don't reply very often, but I wanted to help you if it was possible. Let me know how it goes if you can. or if you want someone to talk to.

Thank you for sharing your story with me. I"m so sorry that that happened to you. It must of been so terribly hard to deal with. I try andmake sure that I sit with my feet propped at naptime and when my kids go to bed to help things out. It's a little easier to do now that the kids are in school.

No, you aren't too early along to have pre-eclampsia. I was much further along than you with my first pregnancy, though. I didn't start having BP pressure until around week 30. I gained a tremendous amount of weight and my feet legs and ankles were so swollem, I couldn't wear anything but flip flops. By week 35, my BP was really high. It's normally pretty low, so we were all nervous. I got pulled out of work and put on "modified bed rest" at week 37. I could be up and about but only for a little while and ONLY if someone was with me. I couldn't even drive by myself. I did make it to my due date, but when we finally made it to delivery, my BP was through the roof. The nurses were terrified. I could see it in their faces...but no one was talking to me. Even DH looked like he was scared. One of the nurses actually turned the monitor around so I couldn't see it. I had no idea what was going on. I just remember a team of about 10 doctors and nurses filing in. After DS was born, they took him away immediately. I didn't even get to hold him. His Apgar scores were 9 &10, but they wished him to ICU anyway. AFter a very grueling delivery (3 hours of pushing, vacuum, forceps), the doctor came in to talk to us. Turns out my BP was 199/141. The doctors and nurses that came in were from the cardiac unit. There was a team for me and one for DS. We both were fine, but the high BP sent the whole L&D unit into a panic.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I had it with my first and fourth pregnancies too. First time around, no swelling, no sick feelings, nothing. I did have protein in my urine though. My DD was born 3 weeks early (very healthy, thank God) and before that, I was dealing with it for about a month. I had bed rest for the last 2 weeks in my pregnancy. I asked my OBGYN if I would have the same problem if I had more kids and he said no, something about it being likely to happen. Second and third pregnancies were "normal". With my DS I was at 30 weeks when my pressure sky rocketed. I was instructed to go to the L&D ASAP after I picked up my kids (had no one else to do it). I was admitted and told I would not leave the hospital before delivering. At every shift change I was asked if I had ever had this problem before and when I told them I had, they asked me if all my kids had the same dad. I was told that since I had it the first time around, I couldn't get it again unless this baby had a different dad. I got the shot to strengthen his lungs that same day because they didn't know if I would make it to 36 weeks. Again I had no swelling but I would get head aches now and then. My BP got so bad, The nurses and Dr's were surprised I hadn't gone into convulsions. I was being monitored very closely and finally I had an emergency c section. DS was born 9 weeks early and only weighed 3lbs 5oz. He was only on oxygen for less than a day and the only problem he had was that he had jaundice. He was in the NICU for 17 days when he reached 4lbs. I was only able to go see him once a day for a couple of hours to visit and bring him his breast milk.

That's what that first nut doctor told my daughter. But the second pregnancy was by the same person and she still got it. Happy ending is that Em was born 10 wks early, weighed just over 2 lbs and today is a happy, healthy kindergartener!

And this is why I"m so scared about having it again. I was so terrbly sick with it my first pregnancy that I was on bed rest at 6 months and when I say bed rest I men restrictive bed rest that I was allowed to take a shower and get smething to eat and that was it. If I wanted to go to the store I had to be in a wheel chair. I coudln't walk or anything. The only pairs of shoes that fit me going into the hospital didnt fit leaving because it even got worst. My daughter was induced 3 1/2 weeks early because I was bleeding and they couldn't figure out why. So to think that this is happening again scares the living poop out of me.

Don't borrow trouble before it happens! Educate yourself and be prepared but worrying about what might happen will only stress your body and raise your BP.

I like to use the Cleveland Clinic for patient education but the Mayo Clinic is also a valuable source of information.

Good luck to you and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!
