Reusable bag credit ($.05 per bag) going away Dec 1st

I was checking out at Dillons this morning and the cashier told me that as of December 1st Dillons (she didn't know if it was all Kroger stores or just Dillons) is no longer offering the $.05 credit for using a reusable bag. She said that so many people are doing it now, they are just losing too much money on it.

I'm disappointed. That credit definitely adds up over time. I will keep using reusable bags because I don't need the plastic bags for anything and I think they're wasteful.

Have any of you heard anything about this?

I thought only whole foods and target did that. Never knew Kroger fam did. I am disappointed in them though. They sure jumped on the "go green" train when it was the trend, but now that it's not so mainstream/in your face they want to be like that. what a shame.

That's a shame. My Kroger still gives the .05 credit per bag. I haven't heard that they are stopping it. I hope they don't, but it won't deter me from using my totes.

I don't think that being green is a trend. I think that people really care about our environment and the future they are leaving for their kids and grandkids. More and more people are using totes so they don't feel that they need to dish out the cash any more to encourage it's use. Plastic bags don't biodegrade, are not sustainable because they are made from petroleum which takes about 500 years to make.

My Kroger has never given a credit (to my knowledge!) but I'm like you...I'll continue using them.

Kroger has supposed be have been doing this for a while but I have only ever had one cashier actually give me the credit. Maybe we should all just stop using reusables for a while and see if they change their mind. Please, I don't believe that .05 cents is going to make or break them - they have to pay for the bags if you don't bring your own.

I had a cashier at the newer Dillons on 6th tell me the same thing. I am disappointed as well. I would even be happy if they gave us half the credit. Is it worth contacting them?

It won't deter me either. I'm just disappointed that they aren't offering it anymore.

I brought up this point too. The woman told me that each plastic bag costs 1/3 of a cent. So it's not an even trade off for them.

I wondered that too. It probably wouldn't hurt to contact them.

When they told me that I said "guess I'll just have to do my grocery shopping at Target (the other place in town that offers the $.05 credit)". But I was sort of kidding. Dillons doubles coupons and has a better coupon policy for me. Groceries at our SuperTarget are expensive.

But I think I will try calling them. So I least feel like I tried to fight it.

Too bad the credit is going away. I never remember to ask and never see the credit on my Kroger receipt. Not sure if my store even does it. Would be nice.

I asked at my Kroger tonight if they will be doing away with the 5 cent credit, and they said no. It's going to continue here. Maybe then it has to do with Dillons and not Kroger???

Plastic bags don't biodegrade, but they're used to make all sorts of other things from if you recycle them. Plus, we use them for waste basket bags and my SO uses them at work to clean up the many messes associated with plumbing. I don't feel bad about using them. The only reason I even use my reusable bags when I do is because I don't have to worry about the handle breaking or the bottom falling out of them - and I can fit a whole lot more in them than I can a flimsy plastic bag.

And if each bag costs them 1/3 of a cent and they have to use 4 of those bags to one of my resuable - it doesn't take long for that 1/3 of a cent to add up over the course of a day IMO. But they'll just raise the prices to cover whatever it costs them anyway.

They still do the credits here, but they also do fuel credits, which is what I always do anyways. Every 100 points (which is also earned for every $1 spent) earns us 10 cents off per gallon at the Kroger gas stations or Shell gas stations around here (Middle TN).

Same here in KY. Either 4 gas points or .04 cash back per bag. And my Kroger cashiers always remember to ask.

Our Kroger stopped doing this about 2 years ago. What I think is bs, is that they have a recycling bin for plastic bags in the front. They sell those bags to companies who recycle them and use them to make other products. So, while they may pay 1/3 of a cent per bag and they were giving more than that away, they are making money when people recycle them in their store by selling them to a recycler.

I've never gotten it at Kroger. I get it everywhere else but not there...I guess there's nothing for me to miss.
