Beginning October 1, Kroger is pumping up its fuel savings program, allowing customers to save as much as $1 per gallon when they fill up their car's gas tank.

Kroger is switching to a new "points" system for those who use is fuel rewards. Under the new program, every $100 in grocery purchases earns 100 points.

How the New Program Works

With the newly improved fuel program:

* Every 100 points ($100 in spending) will earn you a 10 cent per gallon discount at Kroger gas pumps.
* 200 points will earn you a 20-cent discount at your next fillup.
* 500 points will earn 50 cents off
* If you spend $1,000 in a month, you will earn 1,000 points and will get a $1 per gallon discount at your next fillup

Kroger's new program will help it better compete with Bigg's fuel savings plan, which from the beginning has allowed customers to earn bigger discounts. In the past, Kroger offered only a 10 cent discount, or 15 cents with a Kroger Mastercard.

How to Build Fuel Savings Even Faster

Kroger's new plan allows shoppers to earn fuel discounts even faster by purchasing store and restaurant gift cards in their local Kroger store.

Each gift card will give you double the number of fuel points.

* So a $25 Olive Garden git card will earn you 50 fuel points.
* A $50 Best Buy or Home Depot gift card will earn you 100 fuel points.


Customers we spoke with at the Hyde Park Kroger told us this new plan sounded like a win-win to them, and were looking forward to earning more discounts on their future fillups.

The new fuel savings will take effect at all 48 Kroger fuel centers in the Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio area.

Sometimes I get lucky to spend $50 in a month with the way I shop.

in TN, we get...

...200 pts - 2 fill-ups, not 20¢/gal off

This is how it has been in Columbus, OH since I started couponing (about 2 years).

Spend $100-349 BEFORE COUPONS - earn .10 off per gallon for FOUR fillups
Spend $350-549 BEFORE COUPONS - earn .20 off per gallon for FOUR fillups
Spend $550-749 BEFORE COUPONS - earn .30 off per gallon for FOUR fillups
Spend $750+ BEFORE COUPONS - earn .50 off per gallon for FOUR fillups

So if my total is $35 before coupons, and $8 after, I pay $8 and get credit for spending $35 towards my fuel rewards.

well this is really stinky....i like the old way better...which was spend 50 get .20 off a gallon...

but at least if it stays the OLD way it is BEFORE coupons

Weve had this program for ever, but its every 100 earns 10 off per fillup unless you have the visa mastercard with kroger then its. .15

I got the chance to talk to a manger at a Kroger store in my area the other day and he said that this may just be a regional thing. He said Ohio is set up on several different regions and each region has their own set of rules. I told him this made it super confusing to consumers and he agreed.

Anyways, ours is not changing. We still get .20 off per gallon for ever $50. THANK GOD! I would never spend $1,000 a month there.

How many fuel ups is allowed per card. This sounds really crappy if you only get one fill-up. That make you have to spend four to five thousand a month to get throught the month. Giant Eagle will be getting my thousand.

We've had the fuel program for a long time here, its of no use to me since my Kroger doesn't even sell gasoline. Pffft
