I tried to use 2 gift cards when checking out and ran into a problem. These were not gc received from any KMart promotion. They were gc I purchased at Safeway so I could get gas points, so basically like cash as far as I'm concerned. I guess the register can't tell the difference between their promo cards and a reg gc. The register prompted to call for a manager and I just said forget it, I'd use my debit card. The transaction had been so easy and pleasant I didn't want to ruin it. Nicest cashier I ever had, very funny, joking around and everything going smoothly! I forgot to give my free soda coupon which bummed me out, but my $5 off coupon went through and 4 refreshers, so I goofed on the soda....oh well, felt so good to just get out of there semi-quickly and painlessly for once.

I think maybe the register was just having trouble "reading" the card. They enter the gift card number manually and then they have to enter the pin. A customer service employee or manager has to verify this unless the cashier has the override code. This happens to me all the time. I think I demagnetize the cards or something. If there's a long line, I'll tell the cashier I'll use it another time. A lot of them don't seem to have encountered this before.
