| Need to know what type of flower is growing at my house -- pics added!!
Ok so I bought a house at the end of october that had a fair amount of landscaping... we are talking flower beds around EVERYTHING. I am not huge into gardening, but decided I would wait through the year and see what bloomed then just put filler stuff where things didnt grow... Well in back, I have lattice panel and there were these vines on there. In the winter it looked horrible.. Like a dried up dustball of sorts... but I was lazy and didnt do anything with it.. wanted to see what it would become. Well about a month ago it went from brown to green overnight (ok so I am not totally observant)... I went out and got some of the ends of the vine and laced it into the lattice panel to re-attach it. At the time I just figured it was a sort of ivy, and let it be... Well then last week I noticed buds forming, and then they bloomed. I have big (4 to 6 inch diameter) flowers that are beautiful. they remind me of those big hawaiin flowers. One bush has a light purple and the other is more of a magenta color. The flowers blow in the wind and look like paper. The center of the flower is a light yellow/white. I cant remember the shape of the leaves... will check tonight.. I am wanting to get a few more of these, but dont know what they are called... I looked at lowes, menards, a couple nurseries and just cant find them anywhere. I am sure one place has them I just dont know what to ask for. I searched the net also, but after going through hundreds of pics with no real luck decided to turn to here for some help.. I will send a RAOK to the person who correctly names this flower for me... I am REALLY wanting to get more of these planted... Last edited by lhart24; 06-02-2008 at 06:27 PM. |

ditto, from your description it has to be a clematis. They are gorgeous! Can you take a photo and post it? The flowers, seed pods and your description of the vines is dead on. Great job by the way with your description.

That flower name sounds just so wrong for a plant. Sounds more like a body part or body action. Sorry.

Sounds like a clematis to me also. Ours are light purple too. Link to clematis website: Home of Clematis - The Official Website Link to a picture gallery with each plant named: Clematis.com : Variety Search

There are literally hundreds of varieties of clematis, and it sounds like you have some very expensive ones, no telling what else is in your garden then! You can sometimes take the tendrils, pull to the ground and cover with soil, it may root and you can then transplant some to another area!

ya i am pretty sure that is what they are.. now just a matter of finding them around here.. Other things around my house... .. that I know... tulips and irises things I dont know.. oh that list is just too dang long.. LOL I will have to take a few pics tonight and post.. you will have to excuse the weeds in the pics.. I was really just letting it all grow until something bloomed.. I am pulling weeds this week.. haha This lady was fanatical about her landscaping.. makes the house look awesome.. but I am not sure what to do etc... |

Do you have a Master Gardener program in your area? It is through the cooperative extension service. Also if there is a Garden Club in your area they are also a wealth of info about gardening. Be careful pulling "weeds" though until you identify more of your plants, would hate for you to pull up a "TREASURE". You can take popsicle sticks and label what you know as it blooms, or take photos and put in an inexpensive album. You are on the right track, I wouldn't plant or move anything until you figure out what everything is. We have an older garden too, was very overgrown. Once I got it under control things came up and bloomed that I didn't see before. |

my dad helped this weekend and identified some as DEFINITE weeds.. the rest stays until it blooms or dies.. LMAO.. That is my gardening rule. I looked around here and havent found much info on gardening (as far as clubs etc).. though I have been told the old man that runs the local hardware shop is a good source of information.. so I may have to stop in there and have a chat with him..... may have to get some plants and what not from him... I havea large area that is fenced in in my backyard (half concrete lined with landscaping, half dirt).. there was a pool there but I requested it by pulled out when the couple moved and the fence finished off... so the dirt patch is where the pool was. I am wanting to get more of the vines to kind of plant along the fence to finish off that area somewhat... and possibily put in a small pond... So that is the reason I started asking. I wanted to get a pirce on these plants etc.. and start slowly buying what I need and getting the landscape finished off.. |

I have never really had a garden (my parents have one now... but didnt have one most of the time growing up)... sooo do I need to fertilize these?? If so what kind... and how often to water them?? I have been watering them daily but want to make sure that isnt too much or not enough.. havent put fertilizer on them at all |

Those ARE clematis. I have the dark purple variety-I think it is called jumangi? Anyway.........I water mine every couple of days and fertilize with miracle grow once a week. Mine is really big and almost covers my mailbox. This is my third and best season yet since I planted the bulbs. I love these. They are so easy to care for. Enjoy!

My daughters husbands family has a family greenhouse and so she gave me them for mothers day! So cost wise i am not sure....i do know that you can buy them at like Menards, Walmart etc.....you can either get seeds or started plants HTH! ![]() PS..these do spread, they are bulbs, and you can dig up, separate, in the spring or fall when dormant and transplant them elsewhere Last edited by winnross; 06-02-2008 at 09:40 PM. |

I bought mine at Sam's Club. I think the box included 6 bulbs and it cost me $12-14. I'll have to take a pic tomorrow and post mine (before I send my camera in for repair--grrrrrr)
