| It's that time of the year...Garden time
So who is growing a garden? I know luvcoupons is planting one...who else? Obviously, I have a lot of room for a garden on my land, but I know alot of ya'll probably have limited space....you can still plant tons of stuff. My uncle lives in an upstairs apartment in LA and has all types of stuff growing in a container garden on his balcony. I am not into row gardening much anymore. Since I am a serious couponer, Del Monte just about pays me to take home their canned veggies, LOL...so I prefer that over the cost of growing them. I am, although, big on growing spinach...whether I can get it canned or not. I also like to grow things I cannot usually get free or that I just prefer the home grown taste of. I grow broccoli, cauliflauer (sp?) and brussel sprouts early in the season..here in arkansas, we can plant them very early in the year. Soon, I will be putting out tomato plants. I grow my watermelon, zucchini, spaghetti squash, cantalope, cucumbers, yellow squash and bird house gourds from seed. I am considering growing my own jalapenos this year. Last year I did bell and banana peppers...I might add jalapeno to my collection. Either way.....I wanna know what everyone here is growing. Lets' keep this thread alive and watch it grow. I am hoping everyone has some great tips to share. I know that one of my biggest irks about my garden are the blasted BUGS!!! I swear, last year, overnight, potato bugs wiped out a whole row of potato plants!!! Well, I am stocked up on the Sevin dust this year.....c'mon pesky bugs...I am ready for you'ins.

I hope hubby plants tomato's and squash this year. He puts diapers or hair in the ground around the roots because they hold moisture and keep the plants from drying out here in the hot Texas sun. He also washes the plants off with Johnson's baby shampoo in the sprayer. It kills the bad bacteria or something like that.

I have some green onions growing in the flower garden beside the house. Its so nice to go out and get fresh onions whenever you need them. I thought about tilling up a garden this year. But I think I may just plant a couple of tomatoes in planters.

We plant a 2 big gardens every year as well as several beds. Our onions are almost ready to eat and the potatoes, radishes, lettuce, and carrots are coming up. We always plant green beans that I can every year. I canned 66 quarts last summer (prefer the taste). DH LOVES to plant tomatoes, we usually plant close to 100 plants each year and I can juice and salsa. Corn, bell and jalapeno peppers, okra, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow and patty pan squash, sunflowers, garlic and sage will all go out later. We also have lots of fruit trees in the yard, peach, apple, nectarine and pears. So summertime is ALWAYS busy around here but we love it!! |

need to get some new pepper plants this year. Easy to grow and fun to watch. My pineapple tree is very slowly growing - looks more like an Aloe Vera than a pineapple. The cabbage in a pot (Lauren - skye named it after my ex boss and boss did not see the irony) is growing well. Would never have tried it without the darn school projects.

How exciting to see so many people gardening! I'm pretty excited about our garden - it's our first attempt at a "real" garden. We have planted our seeds in the house already and have lots of nice plants already. Just gotta get DH on the tilling! We are planning tomatoes (bunch of different kinds), tomatillos, peppers, cukes, butternut squash, summer squash, zucchini, pumpkins (both pie and prize), watermelon, canteloupe, sugar snap peas, string beans, lettuce, corn (which I hear is more complicated so don't know if this will work out)... can't remember what else. Sure hope we don't have a drought this summer again!!

I have deer and shade, so not much for me. Usually do some tomatos in pots on the deck - have also done cucumbers & pepers that way, too. We'll see. Might throw a tomato out by the mailbox - there's lots of sun there, but critters might eat it...
