Prescription Toss expired meds

Just a reminder: This is a good time to check all of your RX and OTC meds for expiration dates.

Good idea! Check with your local police dept. Ours has a program that takes all medication, no questions, and disposes it properly.

Search online, but they really are good long past.expiration. The military did a study and things were fine 5 or 10 years past the expiration date.

I read the same thing. I usually keep things longer. There were certain ones they said not to keep but I cant remember which. The ones I usually dispose of are the ones I know I wont ever use again.

Doxycycline was the only one so far I 'thought' could be dangerous after expiry. I then found conflicting info after I trashed three months worth that I could use right now, le sigh. My doctors want me to have at least three months supply of most meds and a year backup of meds medicare might pull on and off the list as they see fit. As I understand The hard expiry date on the actual manufacturer's label isn't even a hard deadline. Meds can be used a year or more after if kept, dark, proper humidity and temperature. My epipen's expire every year but the company says only to replace them every five years....UNLESS the window changes color or goes cloudy. I get meds free from Merck and have dates out as hard expiry dates on boxes as far out as 2018. My allergy med is liquid and I get manufacturer's bottles and the dates are as far out as 2016. Discolored, crumbly, wet, moldy, nonworking meds need to be tossed regardless of date. Thats what I know. But good idea. I have so many meds my stockpile has been named "Elvis' Suitcase", sad but true. Thanks for the reminder. Also, rite aid has a recycle program. Most cities have one as well as the police station. Ours is a mail box inside you just dump and go on your way. I have had doctors tell me to flush meds and/or toss them. I have also been told to crush them and toss em with coffee grounds as well.

SOME are good for years but others are not. Prescriptions such as antibiotics should be disposed of no longer than 2 years past issue, i.e. 1 year after dispose of date. There is a misconception that all medication is good for years, but especially antibiotics lose their effectiveness gradually over time. Not to mention, there is the potential to make yourself really sick by taking old meds. After working several malpractice and risk management cases, I would advise against this time frame.

See that is what I thought. Doxycycline is an Antibiotic. I was terrified so I got rid of the meds. Then I read other info saying I could have kept it another year. I was so upset because again, I could use it right now. I check with the manufacturer, the doctor, the pharmacy and research when I think about what meds they want me to keep on hand for an extended period.
