Need advice. How do I get that stinky smell out of wet clothes that have sat too long

I forgot ALL of my jeans in the washer since yesterday morning and I guess it must've gotten hot in my laundry room cause they stunk to high heaven when I opened up the washer this evening. I've ran them again which generally seems to do the trick but they still stink really bad and it's every pair of good jeans I have & I have to work in the morning. Can someone tell me some kind of general household product that might get the smell out?

Rewash them adding 1/2-1 c. of ammonia to the wash water and 1/2 c. vinegar to the rinse water. I promise this will work.

Would you let us know if you try it and it works? I've had that happen before too and had to run them through at least two times to get the smell out. Didn't think of vinegar and would never have thought of ammonia! Thanks! And good luck!

I always rewash with the Color Safe bleach, detergent and fabric softener and this always works also. I buy the color safe bleach just for those times!

With all due respect, as far as I know, color safe bleach does nothing to kill bacteria.

I have had this happen many of time.. three kids, wet clothes...

I always wash or rewash with 1 cup of vinegar in addition to laundry soap and HOT water.

Works everytime... my girls have a closet stuffed with clothes and only a few times have I had to toss clothes, mainly when they sat in a bag (from babysitter) and got moldy.

You are very right! I just looked it up to see what was in it and what it's supposed to be used for. I guess I just assumed since it was called bleach that it would kill bacteria, oops!! It really does seem to work but maybe it's just the rewashing in reality that works?

Hey guys, thanks for the advice! I'm rewashing with the vinegar right now, hopefully that will work cause I don't have the amonia. I'll let you guys know the verdict.

Thanks for not getting mad at me!! My mom swears by the color safe bleach for removing odors, too, so there must be something to it but I don't know what! I've just always gotten really good results on colors with ammonia. Now for whites...it's Clorox all the way! (just remember to never mix the two...the fumes are dangerous!).

I think it's so weird that vinegar is so darn stinky on its own but makes things NOT stinky anymore. I have used it to rinse out my dishwasher, too, when it gets a little mildewy smelling.

It took me forever to try vinegar in my laundry because I just knew it would make my clothes stink. But, to my delight it works very well.

Actually vinegar is acetic acid and it not only removes odors, but will disolve any mineral buildup on faucets or shower heads when you soak them. It works far better than any store bought product I have bought, including CLR. It also will remove water spots from glass.

another good option is to add baking soda to each load...about 1/2 cup or so

Baking soda works wonders. My husband's a landscaper and working in 100+ heat in Oklahoma makes his work clothes reak! 1/2 cup baking soda added to his wash and you cannot even tell he worked outside in those clothes!

I have used borax on my kids football stuff. They don't like to smell clean but I want them clean so I bought that because it has no smell but gets smells out of clothes. My son loves it because he gets to pretend it's not cleaned but I know it is!!

I've used baking soda and vinegar (not together) both work, So does rewashing. I think the biggest thing is to take all the clothes out and re position them. It seems that the odor stays most in the folds. I'm really bad about forgetting, especially with the washer and dryer in the basement, Outta sight Right Outta my mind

For stinky dish towels, I put them in the microwave for a few minutes before putting them in the wash. Kills all the bacteria and odor.

Someone had told me awhile ago that vinegar is a great subst. for fabric softener if you run out. It does not stink like you think it would either.

This is the advice I've been looking for all my life

I cannot stand the smell of a stinky dish towel or dish rag. Sometimes I don't have enough to do a whole load of whites to bleach them and just washing them doesn't get that stank out.
