Geeks or just plain owners....I am just about ready to buy a laptop for my dd who will be attending college in the fall. I think the 2 on sale at Best Buy this week are good. A Toshiba and Sony. Here they are: Toshiba L355D-S7901 $599 AMD Turion X2 Sony VGN-NS240E $649 Intel Centrino both have 3GB memory and 250GB hard drive I know a lot of people have said that they really think Toshibas are good and I personally have always found Sony "anything" to be good and reliable - although I have never owned a laptop. This is a big purchase for me (i.e. one I cannot afford but it is necessary for school)....so any help or advice, or opinions would be appreciated. She is not a big gamer or anything like that, but will have PowerPoint presentations, documents, photos, etc. And ofcourse all teens download music. I just want something that is going to be decent and not breakdown and will do what she needs. I cannot buy a new computer every year...in the past I have had them 6 YEARS! so please guide me! |

We have two Toshiba laptops. The first we bought from a friend who had it for about a year and we've had it for 3. It's still going strong. Then before Christmas we got the other laptop and it's the Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5895 and it's going great so far! We've never had a Sony, so I can't comment on that.

I asked my husband who's a computer geek personally and professionally. He said he's get the Sony because it's got better compatability w/most programs. And that both of them are good - he'd just prefer the Intel. You might also want to check her orientation materials to see what guidelines they have. I know they sometimes have certain recommendations for what will work best with their wireless or whatever. Good luck and congratulations to your DD!

I own a Toshiba and have not had any probelms with it. Some people seem to really Prefer Sony, I like Toshiba. I sold IT products for a while and never had have issues with the Toshiba and I sold a lot more of them then the Sony. The Sony does have the Intel which I think is better so either way you should be good. Congrats!

Buy the Sony - Intel is much better than AMD.
