I very highly doubt it. They yellow-sticker the pre-wrapped stuff and it usually sells fairly quickly. And ht has always seemed to have much higher standards than other stores. We've never gotten sick off of it

I'm sure its fine, but I have had food poisoning twice in my life and one of those times it was from eating bad chicken. I'm a little gun shy about it I guess. Food poisoning is not something you tend to forget.

I've been buying this for a while, when I don't have time to defrost the frozen chicken. It's cooked as soon as I get home. So far, so good....

Interesting, I haven't gotten any bad meat but I tend to use it that day or the next day when I do get it.

I actually worked in the meat dept at HT for about 8 months, last sept-april. The reason the chicken in the case is cheaper is because it comes in bulk in one big case and we dont have to do anything with it but stick it in the case. All of the other chicken that comes in is already trayed and wrapped for us, all we have to do is price it.

And HT was more strict on health codes than any other place I have ever heard of in my 8 years working in meat, so I think you are safe there HTH

That's good to know. Do you know why the expiration is shorter than the prepacked ones? Or why the butcher would tell me that?

the pre packed ones came in with a date on the box that we put on the tag. anything else that is not prepacked or that we tray/prepare/cut has a strict 4 day expiration, then (even tho it is still good) we trash it. they waste so much food it kills me. I bet if you went through the dumpster out back you could find $1000 worth of perfect food everyday

Some people do. Dumpster diving is apparently quite popular. Ick.

On that note though, as much as I love HT I have had a bad experience on 2 different occassions with 'fresh' fish. Now I ask them to let me smell it before they package it up for me. I think it kinda freaks them out, but oh well...better safe than sorry. Nothing worse than to come home and be all ready to prepare dinner and find out you main course is rotten.

Yup. The one and only time I bought marked down salmon.

Now, if it's fresh, I pay full price. No skimping on that. Maybe that's why we eat fish so rarely...

You never forget the stench of fish gone bad...nasty.

Yea, but you have to bring it back. No way I was going to keep something that stunk that bad until the next day when I had a chance to take it back.

Don't feel bad Moggy, I ALWAYS ask to smell the fish no matter where I buy it! If it smells the least bit fishy don't buy it. Fresh fish does not have a smell.

I"m glad I'm not the only one And you're right - if it smells like fish its old - fish should smell like the water it came from, not like fish.
