| Vacationing in OBX - HT or FL???
I will be in Duck for 10 days and have found out that there is a HT and a Food Lion in a neigboring town. Having never been to either, where is the best place to shop (and why). I know everyone is busy, but if you can give me any info at all, I'd really appreciate. I plan on bringing my big "box-o-coupons" on my trip. If you can recommend any other shopping places, I'd love that too. TIA. Michele

I'm not familiar with that area, but here in Charleston, SC I have found much better deals using coupons at HT. They double up to .99 everyday and if you're lucky you might be there during triple coupons. There prices can be a little higher on some things, but I just don't find the same deals at FL. FL does not double coupons, but they have on-line printable coupons that you have to sign up for and can match with manu coupons. If there is a Bilo there, they double up to .60 or higher depending on the store. Also, Publix doubles up to .50 and they have awesome BOGO deals as well as in-store coupons you can match with manu's. I'm not sure where OBX is, but hope this helps some. You can check prices on-line at HT by using the Express Lane which is their on-line shopping service. It might give you a better idea of their prices. |

Harris Teeter is where I shop. They have double Q's up to .99 and they have really good meat. We have 2 FL and I don't shop at either one. HT has the best customer service also. Good luck! HT sales start every Wed. so be sure to check their website.

I live next to both of these stores in Kitty Hawk. Food Lion prices are better on a lot of items and they do not double. The Harris T. is brand new and will not be open for business until May 6. There is on in Nags Head and sometimes the prices are worth the 15 minute drive. They only accept 20 coupons per person per day. they only double to .99. Depending on when you come the harris t ads will not be honored on the outerbanks of nc. it actually has this disclaimer on the website if you look at the nc ad. Until now they have been and have not been able to tell me when it will stop. the ads are not in the stores for you to look at but the items have been priced on the shelves. If I were you I would shop both as they are directly across the street from each other and are about a 10 minute drive from duck. (depending on where in duck) i hope this helps.

sorry, more to add. Harries T does have wonderful customer service and since it will be brand new they will be trying extra hard to get it right. There deli is wonderful and I would strongly recommend it over Food Lions.

Tammy, Thanks for the info, but unfortunately I will be there from the 18th to the 26th or 27th of April so won't be able to make it to the opening. Darn. Do you know if there are any of these stores in Corolla???? Thanks.

There is a Food Lion and Harris Teeter in Corolla. Your grocery prices at the "beach stores" are going to be much higher than any other store you shop at. You might be better off bringing the majority of your groceries with you and just shopping for fill-ins. The prices are really that much higher! I am actually not on the "beach", but on the mainland about 20 minutes from Kitty Hawk. On Saturdays our Food Lion is swamped with tourists buying groceries before driving over the bridge.

Mommysusan1 is correct our prices are much higher than they would be if you buy before you cross the bridge. I hope you have a wonderful time in duck. The weather is supposed to be in the upper 60s to 70s. I will hope no rain for you and for me.

Thanks for the info. DH has training for his job in Duck Mon-Fri so we decided to join him and add on a couple of days at each end of the week. I'm hoping that there will be enough for me and my two sons to do --they are 3 & 4. I'm hoping the weather will be good so they can play in the sand. So, this bridge --- I assume we'll be crossing over it to get to Duck. And, it's before you get to Kitty Hawk?? Susan--In what village is the less expensive shopping? where do you do your shopping?? thanks. Thanks again. Michele

I live in Grandy, NC- it's where a lot of people drive through on their way down from up north on 158. I am not sure where you are coming from. The "bridge" we keep referring to is the Wright Memorial Bridge over the Currituck Sound. A word of warning- stop to go to the bathroom before you get to the bridge (the Exxon in Grandy has always had clean bathrooms). A little past the bridge is the left hand turn that takes cars to Duck/Corolla and traffic will get backed up/STOPPED over the bridge and beyond. The later in the afternoon you go, the worse traffic will get. The only grocery store here is a Food Lion. But we also have the world famous monster truck, the Grave Digger. They have interesting place to stop- a store, diner, pictures in front of some of the trucks. We just went this AM and they added a little fenced in area with some goats, chickens, pigs and a huge bunny rabbit. You can't miss it when you drive by. You asked about places to eat. We don't eat out much, especially at beach prices. One place I always recommend is Spanky's- a hamburger/hotdog place. They prices are reasonable and the food is good.

If you are coming from vb area you will be coming through Grandy as stated above. There is a fl there on the right. When you come across the bridge you will see another fl on the left but there prices are higher than the one in Grandy. You asked about restaurants. I depends on what you want and what you want to pay. In duck is Sunset grill which is on the sound. it is pretty good. I do not go to duck much so that is the only one I know about there. Its only 15 minutes to kh but I just never go that direction. In Kitty Hawk there is Rundown Cafe which is good and about 15.pp. For mexican there is Lafogata. Down by the KH post office is Hurrican Mos (popular with locals) also Black Pelican. (AGAIN popular with locals. these two are about the same cost and probably about 20pp. There is a all you can eat buffet but I have never eaten there. For a bagel for breakfast in kh beside food lion is a bagel shop called Bagels to Beef. There french toast bagel is pretty good (ask them to heat and ask for syrup). Inexpensive shopping (not much of this around here) You can go down to the outlet mall in Nags Head about mp 20 give or take a few. Hope this helps a little[/i] |
