My kid wont go to bed!

Okay this has nothing to do with couponing but really looking for some advice.. I have 2 boys, 3 & 5. My 3 year old can get up early and go to bed at a decent time. My 5 year old will not go to bed!! He will stay up til 1-2 in the morning even if I get him up before 10 am. The only way I can get him up that early is if we have somewhere to go and even then sometimes he will sleep through it.. If we are at home it's impossible to get him up before 11:30. The other day he was up past 2am, I got him up at 9:30 the next morning, played a lot outside that day to wear him out and he still was up until 1:30. They never take naps either. He starts kindergarten soon and will have to be up early! Any advice would be so appreciated, thank you!

I would get him up earlier in the morning and put him down for a nap after lunch. He just needs a schedule. My best friend had to do this with her son. She would put him in bed and let him cry himself to sleep. Sounds mean but after getting him on a schedule he was fine.

I would start getting him up at the time he will be getting up for school. He may need a nap for the first few days but he will adapt before school starts. Also make sure he isn't drinking caffeine and no tv leading up to bedtime.

Benadryl?

You know, just to get the routine started.

Sounds like the easy way out, but...

I cannot figure out how to keep him up in the morning he just keeps going back to sleep and when I do get him up extra early he will still go to bed late, even later with a nap! He won't stay in his bed or if he does he will play with something forever and say he doesn't know how to fall asleep.. I don't give them caffeine ever and am not too fond of drugging him to sleep...
Thanks everyone!

He doesn't stay up in the mornings because he doesn't fall asleep til 11:30 at night. My best friend had to put her son back in bed a few times when she was getting him on a schedule. Just have to be firm and not give in.

I was just about to say, Hmmm. Maybe he has "allergies" and needs some nightly Benadryl.

Moms need sleep to be at their best.

I will add this.

Once my son told me he wasn't tired and wasn't going to go to sleep. kept turning the light back on.

So, I took out the stepstool and removed the light bulb. Once he was in the dark, it helped. I also gave him Benadryl to help him breathe better, and a tad of warm milk. It convinced him he was tired.

I let him have his light bulb back a few days later after he went to bed on time a few nights in a row.

I know I should be more firm to keep him in his bed but its hard when my 3 year old is asleep in the next bed and will be woken up from the yelling.. Not me, the 5 year old .. Ill put him back in bed and as soon as I am walking away he will be right behind me over and over again, then he starts laughing like its a game!.. I do have the tv on until and past bed time.. I hope I can convince my husband to turn it off for a while before they go to bed, hoping it will
Help!

How about having a nighttime routine, maybe a warm bath/shower to relax him, followed by reading a bedtime story?

Tire him out during the day. Yeap, ad that to your already booked schedule I bet you're thinking. I have DD (going on 4), DS (going on 3) an DS 1.5yrs...I've established a 9pm bedtime since 3mos of age but then moved it up to 8 as they got older and Mom had more chores to do. DS No1 still gets up a couple of time bit we send him back to his room every time.,,only on Fridays and maybe during the weekends I'll let them stay up a little bit longer...but for the most part yeah it's tough but keep at it and DONT back down. My nephew is the same way, 1-2am and I tell my sister are you kidding me? Then again I'm a bit more strict when it comes to routines as such am I with closing the kitchen btwn meals...they eat the basic 3 meals/day and (2) snacks in btwn..,they can eat all day if I let them but it's not happening on my clock...hope you find a way, good luck!

Update: Do you allow them to watch a short film or episode at night? If so, you can always do that and put the sleep timer on the TV for 15-20 mins.

Mom's need our time too.... The rule around here with ages from 7 to 12 is 8:30 and the kiddos are in their room-sleep, watch tv, read, count sheep. I do not care, it is my time I give all day long. I have to have peace some time. To be honest most of the time they go to sleep, they get up at 7:30-8am summer and 6:30 when school is in session. Three girls share a room.
So a early start, no naps and they are active all day.
-Eat early-think about your food choices watch sugar intake
-Explain what you are doing in regards to the new bedtime rule and why ie
"Mommy needs time to herself-so tomorrow she will be a happy mommy"
If they understand the reasoning behind the rule, they may be more likely to follow it better.
-Cut tv time off a half hour before the deadline-who wants to stay up if there is no entertainment?
-Turn down the lighting in the rest of the house-to most kids dark signals bedtime.
-Get a room darkening shade for their bedroom.
-Get a special nighlight that they get to turn on when they go to their room for "night/night time"
-Put something in the room that they really like-tv with a fav dvd/show or relaxation/fav music?
-Have him lay down give a back rub for relaxation or read to him
-Then stick to your guns-he will have to follow rules his entire life he might as well start now.
Personally I would not go the benadryl route but thats me.
Goodluck

Oh my goodness look at all you organized people with schedules I've been trying so hard to get then on a schedule but I always fail! Every now and then it will stick for a while but it always ends up back like this.. And not even to mention the eating schedule is totally off, they are so picky.. My 3 yo only eats breads and dairy, 5 year old a little better and I feel bad everyone he comes out of his room he wants to talk about something and I feel so bad telling him to go back to bed but thanks for all the tips, going to try real hard today.. Might just have to pour some cold water on his head this morning and get him up!

Good luck,my girls are 6 and 8,during weekends and summer I let them stay up until I go to bed.we start school on the 22nd and they know its going to be going to bed early and getting up while its still dark soon.they share a room and keep each other going at night.when I have a hard time getting them to bed I start grounding them from there favorite things.
At your childs age a bath may help.until he starts school, getting him up at the time he would for school might do it to.if he tries to go back to sleep ,keep him up.maybe let him have a small nap part way through the day.are kindergarden is all day,I don't know if yours is all day or half day.after starting school he should be tired enough to start going to sleep at a decent hr.
Hope you find something that works

Goodluck

This is what i would do too. Also they Johnson and Johnson makes a bed time bath wash that helps. Rosemarry and Lavender help calm down children before bed, I personally would choose this over benadryl. If we give our children meds when they dont actually need them, when they do the meds will not be affective.

I have a 3 year old that and we go thru this every 4 months or so, I believe he is testing him self. We have a night time routine that helps.
at 700 I let him know that its time to start winding down, I call it calm down time. I let him know in 20 min we will go upstairs and he can pick 3 books to read. I also give him a count down of the time, ie every 5 min i let him know, sebastian we have 15 more min, then 10...so on. we go and read 3 books, and then take a bath. After bath we brush teeth and get in pjs. We lay in bed and read a story from his bible and say thanks to Jesus, and then turn the lights off.

it works for us, hope you find a happy medium, keep us updated!!!

It's going to take several days of consistency. One morning of getting him up early isn't going to make him want to go to bed at a decent hour that night. His internal clock needs to readjust and that takes time. Don't wait too much longer and while he's fighting you on it be careful not to say something like You have to bc of kindergarten. He'll resent kindergarten and see it as a punishment. I'd start getting him up when he needs to for school and don't let him take a nap. If he's really that tired, he'll go to bed at a decent hour. If he seems like he really, really must nap that afternoon let him sit quietly watching a half hour show for some downtime.

I second this! My DD is 11 now and she has always struggled to fall asleep at nights. It's been worse since she's been diagnosed as having anxiety problems. She would come out crying at 10pm (i put her to bed at 8:30p) saying she just can't sleep and she was sooo tired. Around this time I found out my best friend game her DS who has severe ADHD melatonin to help him sleep.

Now before you go "I don't want to drug my kids!" Let me point out that melatonin is naturally produced in the human body. It is excreted by the pineal gland and it is responsible for keeping our body in the circadian rhythm(day/night). When it gets dark out the glad produces melatonin and it makes you sleepy so you are asleep at night and awake during the day. Artificial light disrupts this process so that's why experts say for people who have trouble sleeping to turn off the TV, computers etc at 9pm (When your body starts producing melatonin) so you can fall asleep at a "normal" time. DD takes a small pill (I actually got it for free during WAGS RR sale ) and it starts her body producing melatonin so it jump starts the sleep process. I give it to her half hour before bedtime and she hasn't had a problem since starting. I do agree that kids need a schedule so use melatonin to get your kids to sleep better while putting them back on a schedule.

ITA with this! 2 weeks at least before it really starts sticking, probably a month+ before it's completely smooth. I also wouldn't let him nap. Just tough it out for the first few days till he's tired, for another week or two until he's in the rhythm and another couple week's till he's completely in the groove.

Schedules don't have to be terribly complicated, but it helps to write it down on a big paper or marker board for all to see.

7:00 - Everybody UP!!
7:30 - Breakfast
8:00 - Cleanup
10:00 - Snack
12:00 - Lunch

Something simple like that and set timers. (You can download ones for phones or PC that go off at certain hours of the day... funny ringers & beeps keep the kids involved). It'll feel like boot camp for a while, but it really pays off in the end. You don't have to live by the timer forever, just no variation for the first month and both kids will be in the groove. Then you can be a little flexible. (IMO though, I'd never relent on wake up and go to sleep times)

Don't let up on the weekends!

Also, I'd let the 3yo sleep in your bed for a while to give the 5yo a chance to tough it out. We've had to deal with this and sharing bedrooms before and that's what we do. Usually after it's all done for the night, we'll move the one in our bed back to their bed.

Ok, that's M2C about schedules. We're big about them here.... for many years we had too many kids too close together and lived in a teensy townhouse. It was the only way I could survive... Plus, routines and schedules have lots of added bonuses for kids (helps them feel safer, more secure, can help with lots of behavior issues, potty training, etc.)

And, I look forward most to MY scheduled time in the evenings

Some of the chemical sleeping aids are harmless for the very rare use here or there. Obviously you wouldn't do it every night, but every now and then to knock a schedule back into place or to get some sleep for your own sanity it can be very helpful. My kids pediatrician was the one who suggested it to me, so I don't feel like a horrible human being just bringing it up as a tool . Always get the kids doc ok first though.

I second the melatonin- you can buy it as a liquid at a co-op, or if that makes you nervous, a cup of tart cherry juice (also at the co-op) per night has tons of naturally occurring melatonin and has been shown to help kids sleep. This sounds like a circadian rhythm problem- melatonin will help him "reset."
