i'm sitting here, at work, doing nothing ![]() i hate my job. i'm miserable. i don't care any more. i want them to fire me, that's how much i hate it. i hate what i do, i hate how the company has changed, i hate my boss and all his bs, i hate that other people screw up and my department has to clean it up all day, every day. i've changed. i used to put my best foot forward, no matter what. now, i just don't care. i don't like who i am. i don't like how i treat my job. but the thing is that i'm so miserable here, i just can't help it. i've listened to self-help stuff about doing a good job at work, i've listened to church pod-casts about serving god through your work. i've tried, but nothing works to get me out of this funk. i'm almost finished with school (to be a paralegal), i've already re-done my resume and am looking. but no one has replied ![]() i don't know what i expect from this other than to just vent a little thank you for reading

And I guess me telling you to be thankful that you have a job won't help, will it?? Seriously, I know just how you feel. Hope you find something in your chosen field soon.

Does your job offer tuition reimbursement?? If so is that a option, maybe you could get a certificate or degree in something else. I just got a job last wk after 6 months of going on endless interviews so the only advice I can give you is this: Please don't quit your current job until you have another one no matter how bad you hate it. |

When I did a major career change it took a few years. It took a little over a year to get into a transition job that relied on my old skills while building the new resume, and then another few years to land the job I currently have. I had some time in there where I thought it was just never going to happen and my boss was making me so unhappy it was starting to affect my health. I'm soooo glad now though that I stuck it out because getting a job when you have a job is a thousand times easier than getting one when you are unemployed. You should be proud of yourself though about managing to juggle school and work. It sounds like you are being proactive about getting what you want, and don't forget to give yourself credit for that - it's a huge accomplishment. |

It's a different job market out there so please do not quit your job until you have something else lined up...I am on unemployment but i do understand how you feel. I left a very lucrative field a few years back to return to school and get my degree in psychology to allow me to do counseling...so many things have changed in the field though since I've entered, that recent regulations (Medicaid/State) required me to have licensure to do a job I've been doing for FIVE years..since I don't have my licensure I was laid off...Now I'm trying to make a decision about returning to graduate school and racking up some major debt or settling for lower paying jobs due to the change in regulations...this economy really stinks overall from my perspective and I totally get your mindset...it used to really mean something if you put your best foot forward and give 110% on the job...but it's a different world out there in more ways than one...really sad when you think about it but try and not let it get you down...and don't compromise your integrity due to others and how they are handling their lives.

I know how you have it Libby! I've had dead end jobs that I've hated too, but just hang in there. Once you get your degree, companies will start contacting you about interviews. My husband is currently in a position similar to yours: Doing work that to him is very easy, has a boss that doesn't give a hoot about him or the fact that he's at least $10 / hour underpaid. He's currently working on getting his Bachelor in Accounting and we hold a small hope that in 6 months time, when he's finished, he'll get a better job.

Hang in there. I have a saying " I can work with anyone, I can work at something I don't like, for 8 hours" when the day is done, go home to your love ones and put your 8 hours of unhappiness behind you, just until you find work that makes you happy.

I'm sorry you're feeling so ...... blah. It sounds to me like everything is just snowballing on you and the fact that you've sent out resumes and received no response is just making you feel worse about your current job (whether you realize it or not). I always encourage everyone to set goals and continue to work towards them, but being hired as a paralegal with no prior legal experience is extremely difficult. Sure, you're going to school and will graduate but you have no experience. Maybe you could apply for a secretarial position with a law firm, just to gain some experience and become familiar with the procedures, etc. This will at least give you some practical experience that will look good on a resume and you'll have opportunity to learn. Try submitting your resume to a corporation such as O'Reilly Automotive, a District Attorney's Office, Municipal Office Building or even a Title Company. As to current job, view it as just that, a job until something better comes along. I applied for and was hired for a job that I don't love/will never love plus took a pay cut all so my family would have better (a lot better) health insurance benefits. So most days while I know this is the smart decision for me, it doesn't make it any easier. By the way I worked as a paralegal for 14 years prior to my current position. |
