| If you're child is sick...KEEP THEM HOME!
So, DS gets speech therapy through our state's Early Intervention program because he is delayed. As part of that, he gets 1 hour of group general developmental therapy. It's basically play group with a stress on speech stuff. We meet at a local library. When we get to the library yesterday, our EI therapist says there will be another little boy joining us (there was originally just my son and another little boy). Ok good. Well, the mother is a half hour late and then when she finally gets there, she has her entire family with her (4 kids all together) and they ALL SICK. The entire sneezing, mucus blowing, phlegm-y coughing lot of them right down to the baby. The little boy ran over and started to play with some toys, and our EI lady she said "no, you need to go back to your mommy and tell her to wash your hands with soap and water" as they were covered in MUCUS. I seriously wanted to leave right then and there. This child was sneezing all over everything and wiping his nose on his shirt and/or hands. UGH. The mom was pretty much ignoring him to tend to the baby. I used up almost all of my wet ones wiping DS's hands/face every few minutes and tried (as best I could) to keep him away from this boy/family. And really, I don't care what anyone there thought of me, or if that's perceived as rude. I'm not the one who bought 4 sick children to play therapy. Now I would like to say, I do not have a problem that she bought 3 extra kids, I understand that a babysitter is expensive. But my goodness, if your children are all sick - DON'T COME! EI therapy is not mandatory, skip a week! Ugh, I am still skeeved out by this. ![]() eww, and I just realized I misspelled "your" in the title.

That's so gross. This is one of my biggest pet peeves, especially this year with all the nasty viruses going around. I probably would have walked out. And if I were the teacher I would have sent the boy/family home. It's completely rude and inconsiderate of someone to do that - I mean, what if someone there was a seriously immune deficient person who catches everything, and with whom just a common cold can turn into something serious like pneumonia?! People just don't think anymore. I hope your ds doesn't get sick!

It's too risky right now...with all the junk that is going around... I, too....would've done the same thing...had I not walked out.

Our school district has a mandatory rule: If a child is running a slight fever they are sent home and must stay home until they have been fever free for 24 hours w/ NO meds.

I would have left........No point in it if you have to worry the whole time. I would have left and let them know why. I hope no one gets sick from it.

That's so thoughtless and selfish. DD's toddler class was missing half the kids today and I'm VERY thankful to the parents who kept their little ones at home b/c they were sick. The kids interact with each other, share toys, and hold hands so if one shows up sick probably most of the other kids will get sick that week as well as their families. I'm well aware of the benefits of hand-washing and sanitizing wipes, but that does not stop airborne germs. ETA: I totally feel your/you're pain on mispelling your thread title, too!

ewwwww gross....the teacher should have told her to leave... for teh past 3 weeks ,I had at least one kid home, because of different illness....today I thought my son had a pink eye,but it is allergies (got some drops from the ped...) I understand, the schools don't want sick kids in schools, but it is getting expensive to get excuses from the pediatrician....each visit $15....this week,i already spent $150 between visits and meds, and I have a good insurance.... my 15 year old missed one test in history, she was sick, now her teacher wants her to be in school at 6.45am to make up the test, because the teacher won't stay after school .if she doesn't ,she will get a 0...he told her ,that if she didn't want to come early ,she should not have missed school...(she had strep throat).we have only one vehicle, hubby works 3rd shift, and has to take off early from work to be able to drive her to school...this is insane.... sorry,I hijacked the thread... |

I'm sorry you had to deal with that sort of situation. In my opinion it boils down to simple common courtesy and respect for others. Just the fact alone that the mother left the house with sick children makes me question her judgment. I'm quite certain she would not have appreciated it if the table had been turned. I do not understand what the thought process is with people these days? Teachers 'bully-ing' student, bosses 'bully-ing' employees, etc. It almost makes me want to crawl back in my house and hide. Of course I would still survive because of my stockpile!! ![]() ![]()

Preach it sister!!!!!!!!! I never take my child anywhere if he's sick- I don't want to spread or catch germs! Unfortunately, there seems to be a serious lack of common sense in our society these days.

I totally agree keep your kids home if they are sick! This is how bad it is here the dr's daughter in my dd's class came to school with fever to take math test and then went home. We later learned she tested positive for swine flu. The same dr's nurse told me to send my dd who had a 101 temp while taking tylenol and motrin to school just make sure to give her the meds 20 min before school??? I don't feel good when I have a fever I sure wouldn't send my child to sit all day feeling lousy Plus get the other children sick.

I totally agree with you. I am also in NJ and DS gets OT through EI and I spoke with the OT about my fear of germs and told her I prefer she cancel if she **thinks** she **could** be sick! We used to do story time at our local library and stopped because so many parents let the kids put toys in their mouths and brought out snotty kids.

Amen, I am convinced this is why Connor has had a double ear infection for over 2 MONTHS solid. He gets a cold everytime all the green-snotty nose kids at daycare do. It is gross to pick up your kids and run into a dozen that have that snotty nose. Call their mom's to pick them up!

I agree!!! I hate when people think that their children should be out an about when they have a cough or whatever because they feel bad that the kid has been inside. Go into your backyard or whatever if you want to get your child out of the house, but be courteous enough to NOT be in contact with other people. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 3 1/2 month old and I am being VERY catious because I can't do anything as far as vaccines or whatever for my new guy. I have limited my other son becuase I just can't take the chance right now - sad, but in everyones best interest since some mothers think it's ok to bring their sick children out to wipe their snot on other kids!!!

You were not the one that was rude! It's rude, rude, rude to expose other people to your sick kid's germs. I always err on the side of being too cautious. I will never be the mother that sends her kids to school sick. We had a story in the local paper about a sister and brother who had perfect attendance, from kindergarten through high school. The Mom said, "Oh, they only got sick on the weekends." I don't care what she says, she sent those kids to school sick and she knows it. Wouldn't want to blow their perfect attendance, now! (Oops, off my soapbox now!)

I am amazed that your EI person didn't say anything. You gotta be so careful. When DS was in EI he didn't have any group stuff, but once he got to SpEd preschool, that place was crazy with the germ thing. So many SpEd kids have immunity problems or health problems- just naturally more prone to get sick, or if they do get sick more prone to complications. So the school was especially vigilant. Even though not all of the children were medically fragile, some of them were, and that was enough to keep them very pro-active. |

Thanks everyone. I'm just really hoping we don't end up sick. I was too. Especially since, when we started EI, I was told to call to cancel my EI appointment if Sean or anyone in the house was sick. Her exact words were "kids with sniffles are ok, but we want to know about sore throats, fevers, green mucus & coughs, etc". I have called every single time Sean or anyone even had sniffles. I just don't understand these other parents, the ones who bring out sick kids. It's not like they're running out to the pharmacy to get medicine or to the doctors office - she bought her sick children to PLAY with other children! What is WITH that? Ugh.

I agree if it's an *optional* meeting, opt out of your child is sick. However, I don't think it's realistic to expect that sick kids won't be in daycare or school. "Don't leave the house with your sick child"? If I didn't, I'd never leave the house! Those of us who work must use some form of preschool or daycare. Our kids are around other kids, sometimes enormous numbers of other kids (56 in my son's Pre-K class). Someone's nose is always running. My children are always getting sick from germs picked up at school. They seem to take turns, so that someone at our house is always sick! Right now I am in a new job where I have 0 paid sick days. In the 10 weeks I have been at this job, I have missed 7 days due to my kids being ill when they had to stay out of daycare - which I then had to make up, or not get paid. I couldn't wait to get them back into school so I could get back to work - runny nose or no runny nose. How many days do you think I'd miss if I kept them home for every sniffle or cough? It's easy for SAHM's that don't need to be anywhere to keep their children home all the time, but I need to earn a paycheck - so my kids will be at school sniffling. The good news that I hear from other working moms is, after the first 6 months to a year in school, they do build up their immune systems and get sick a lot less.

he makes snide remarks about our origins...can we do something about it? of course we could,I had to stop my dh from going to school to confront him.but since dd said no to let it be,he will only be her teacher until the end of dec... beside, she was able to put some white out on his black pants,he always shows his butt in front her face...I know she should not have done it ....by the way ,this is advanced history ,and she is able to maintain an A average....
