Threatening to ARREST a customer

This may be long. I will try to be succinct. I just returned from Walgreens. I had several RR I wanted to roll past this upcoming week. I had about 6 transactions and used the cosmetics counter as I usually do. As my grandma used to say, I have never had "a lick of trouble" with this store. If they are nit busy I do several transactions and always let anyone behind me through. During check-out the cashier started telling me that "I" had the manager pretty upset about coupons. As she went into the story it was obvious she was not speaking about me, as I have not spoken to the manager about coupons or RR.

Evidently a lady came in and checked out with "a buggy full of Theraflu" and had cleared the shelves. The casher called over the manager. Apparently they had a conversation and she told the manager about websites where (manager's interpretation) they tell you how to "rip off Walgreens".

I won't bore you with all the details but the cashier said that "7 people were going to be fired" in the area and they were thinking about "HAVING THE CUSTOMER ARRESTED". When I asked for what she said for using more than 1 RR per transaction. The manager also said there is a law that "you can only buy two cold medicines in a certain amount of time". Uh, that is pseudephedrine and there is no pseudephedrine in Theraflu.I asked her why then would Walgreens advertize a sale for $8 RR when you buy 3. The cashiers are being fired for taking them, even though they have not been taught or instructed not too and as the cashier said "there is nothing on the RR that says you cannot use more than one".

The manager, who is also some kind of district or regional manager is also upset about customers "using fillers". I asked her if Walgreens wanted to make sales or not? The fillers are necessary due to their own policy. There was also talk about Walgreen's losing so much money on their own coupons, such as the October book. Well, whose fault is that?

She told me as well that they pulled some of my (although I don't know how they knew they were mine, I have only been there once this week and I wasn't the one involved in the discussion with the manager) transactions for review but found they were okay.

I have been going to Walgreens for 2-3 months with coupons and RR. Prior to this I was a "regular" customer who went for the weekly sales and let the RR expire most of the time. I have enjoyed the deals but this is too much to have to worry about. ARRESTED for crying out loud.

I have $70-80 RR that expire within 2 weeks. I may just use them and stay with CVS where there are restrictions where the rules are known and almost all the stores use the same policies. I am leaning towards calling corporate and speaking with someone. If stores want to limit purchases, then limit them. Don't allow customers to purchase items and then threaten to have them arrested. This is way beyond too much.

I hate the some people have such negative reactions like this at Wags. I've only experienced good things. However, I will say that the problems lies within the company itself. So many stores and so many employees interpret a policy like this many different ways. I encourage you to call corporate. It's the only way they know that some employees need further training.

It sounds like the cashier is confused or not telling the truth and trying to scare you.

I would talk to the manager and find out for sure what is going on and let them know it's not you abusing their policy. And if they don't like their own policy change it. But don't make it up as they go.

Respectfully I don't think the problem is with this cashier. She is very coupon friendly and had never, even today been less than pleasant and helpful. She was simply relaying the situation as she heard from the manager.

I was not aware that Walgreens recently went through a change in ownership. She told me when Mr. Walgreens (didn't even know there was a Mr. Walgreens) owned the company the training was much better. This may be an over-reaction by the manager but this is ridiculous. She is afraid for her job for simply taking RR from customers as payment for goods purchased.

I also had never had any issues with Walgreens prior to today and I agree that corporate needs to get their act together and either train the leaders as they want them to lead or get leaders that can and will do as they are directed.

Where is this Walgreens? I wouldn't put too much into what the cashier and manager say...in my experience, very few of them understand RRs or their own coupon policy. And for whatever reason, many of them seem to take it personal when we get great deals. And these are deals that Walgreens offers. LOLThat's funny what the manager said about the Theraflu.

They are OBVIOUSLY blowing it out of proportion!

It is a methamphetamine-fighting law, which forbids the purchase of more than three grams by one person in a seven-day period.

Those products include:
* Sudafed (Johnson & Johnson (formerly Pfizer))
* Actifed (Burroughs Wellcome)
* Contac (GlaxoSmithKline) contains the hydrochloride salt
* Claritin-D Contains Loratadine along with Pseudoephedrine.

I feel bad for this manager who is on a course to destroy people without researching the facts OR even knowing his own coupon policy for that matter!

As for you and your RR's just keep doing what you are doing. I would love to see him come up with some random law about Register Rewards. They would have to arrest so many of us!

When I worked at WAGS the computers prompted you to enter the DOB and would not allow you to purchase more than the alloted amount in a transaction.

The employees, if they do get fired, will have an easy law suit against Walgreens for accepting an RR when it doesn't even specifically state that they are not supposed to accept more than one in a transaction.

If Walgreens was really losing all this money-then they would stop the program. DUH!

I am in Tennessee. I appreciate everyone's responses. I am just now calming down. These people are crazy. I don't know whether to try to speak with this manager or not. You know what they say about stirring something. I am glad that I at least got the cashier straight that it was not me.

I do feel for the cashiers though. Not being PROPERLY trained could cause them to lose their jobs. I hope if they do they do sue like above poster stated.

At this point there really isn't a reason to talk with the Manager. It might cause more problems right now. I would not even get involved. The cashier should not have disclosed that information to you and got you all worked up about it.

So sorry!

I dont think that manager would exist if he is verbally threating to fire an employee or arrest a customer for accepting RR. He will get fired right a way. Dont you think that manager that stupid?

I totally agree...........take it up ( Nicely) with the Store Manager.

Its been awhile back, but a cashier told me something one day , about a manager complaining about me using tooo many Q's...HA!( and I still feel like I am in Kindergarden Class.....
I went in the next day( when I had my thoughts together) and had a discussion with the SM.
I asked what seemed to be the problem with me, using coupons. He replied that I had Q's for almost every item I ever purchase.
I explained, this is the New way of shopping! And if Walgreens is going to offer Deals, I am going to take advantage of them by using Coupons and if they were suspect to any Q's I ever used, just to bring it to my attention and I will clarify( instead of them being in a tizzy)

I also explained, that I would prefer to be on the SAME PAGE with the store.
That I understand, they prefer you only do one transaction a day, but if there are clearance items, then its fair game, to get what I want with Q's.

I have hardly any problems @ this store now. The one AM is always happy to see me, as he understands that Q's are $$ for the store( they still may not like adding them up each night....) and he wants to know if there are any HOT Deals.......I shared the Buy 2 candies get a Free 20oz coke a while back....they LOVED that one!( and now they think I should know something HOT -New each week...........hahaha)

I truely believe you can work out resolution(s) with MOST of your Store Managers and Assistant Managers.( but you have to talk to them first!--and preferrably NOT during rush hour)
Give them a chance to do thier jobs, before Corporate is called.

I have been going to Walgreens for 2-3 months with coupons and RR. Prior to this I was a "regular" customer who went for the weekly sales and let the RR expire most of the time. I have enjoyed the deals but this is too much to have to worry about. ARRESTED for crying out loud.

I am leaning towards calling corporate and speaking with someone. If stores want to limit purchases, then limit them. Don't allow customers to purchase items and then threaten to have them arrested. This is way beyond too much.

This sounds like the one I shopped yesterday (you can read my wags trip post) and if you are in Elizabethton, TN then it's the only one. I went back today and they told me I had just missed the other lady that uses coupons like me. The cashier was the BA from yesterday and she asked me if the manager scared me yesterday and I told her no that I was not offended in any way, that we all need to be on the same page. She said he took my receipt and coupons and faxed them to Loss Prevention and asked them, "Tell me anything in this transaction is wrong so we can educate our employees and the public". He genuinly seems to understand all about the coupons concept, one per item, and the ability to use a coupon with a Wags coupon. The cashier told me today that one of the other girls had told the customers she could only take one coupon per transaction!!!! She did put her straight on this matter. It is not this store that is having problems with employees, he told me yesterday that another store was getting ready to let 7 employees go because of coupon fraud. Now what the employees were doing was this: 1. make a purchase to get RR's 2. make another purchase with a cheap filler, thus resulting in a negative balance, and having that negative balance put on a gift card. NOW THAT IS ILLEGAL and we all now that. It has to be the same store because our stories are so similar. At NO TIME did the manager tell me a customer would be arrested for anything. The customer is a Wags employee.

He was not there today or I would have asked him if he had any response from Loss Prevention. I will try to get back over there in the next few days to find out more info. Will report back when I do. In the meantime, please do not think you are going to get arrested for shopping and using coupons and RR's. He seems to be real about what can and cannot be done. HTH

OMG!! Let me tell you...DH is a police officer here in Miami, and if somebody from Wags or anywhere else called to arrest a customer over RR, he would be mad. MAD, I tell you!! I just told him about this, and he said it is absolutely ridiculous. Unless there is a printed limit, etc., what does this "manager" think he can do?

I have never had any of the problems that some of the other "Waggers" have had, and I sincerely don't see any in the future. I feel so sorry that you and the others have had threats against you like this. I do agree with some of the others. Sit and be real sugary-sweet with the manager, and get on the same page. I have also gone so far as to provide a doughnut and coffee breakfast for one CVS that I dearly love. Never hurts to try!! Kill 'em with kindness!! That way, you come out smelling like a rose!

HTH
BINGO. That is the place. Same cashier I would imagine. In fact if you had a binder in the child seat of the cart I passed you as I left. I started to come back in and speak with you but I didn't.

Mr. M. has always been extremely friendly and helpful. As you said he was not there today or I would have spoken with him. This BA is concerned for her job imo. If he understands though, why has he sent transactions to Loss Prevention?

As for your scenario with the Gift Cards, I'm sorry but it is over my head. I have no idea how this is done. But come to mention it she did say this person had paid with a gift card and was using RR somehow for cigarettes and prescriptions. To tell you the truth she lost my in the story. But she did say they were thinking about having someone arrested. I told her if she had any question about any transactions of mine or felt uncomfortable then tell me and I will go somewhere else. She said she really didn't know what was wrong until she spoke with Loss Prevention.

IMO there needs to be some training pretty quickly.

I can't believe Walgreens is still in business with the amount of bad attitude cashiers and managers who take peoples purchases personally and have no training.

I honestly don't know how they are still around. I have slowly gone down to just $9 in RR which I will use Sunday or Monday and then unless there are big MM (like Zantac with coupon ones, not $1 ones) I will not return, its just too much of a hassle and not worth it for me.

I have never liked walgreens. I am in Ohio. The walgreens around here are very suspisous about people with lots of coupons and rrs. Why? That is what they promote to get people in the door?? I just stoped shopping there all together. My sister in law work for one in southern Ohio and she has to work Christmas day. I can't imagian a company taking advantage of the holiest day of the year, when everyone else is closed, to get customers.
If they arrest the customer, shouldn't they arrest the cashier that took the coupons and rrs Off??? Just a thought.

Sorry for your trouble at your WAG. It is inevitable for most couponers (not just you) to be monitored or observed when they are doing several b2b transactions. its just a fact we have to live with if we want to keep doing multiple transactions per store per visit. If the store doesn't mind, fine. BUT if they do mind, I think reporting them to corporate won't do any good. We are just flagging ourselves and making them dislike us.

as to your question on how they can monitor your transaction,

Quote:
She told me as well that they pulled some of my (although I don't know how they knew they were mine, I have only been there once this week and I wasn't the one involved in the discussion with the manager) transactions for review but found they were okay.
There is what you call EJRs (electronic journal report) that can be reviewed instantly if store management wishes to. That is one reason why it is IMPORTANT NOT to get into refund often as most people are very happy to brag about. They are flagging themselves without even realizing it. They wonder later on why their "nice" stores became "ogres" and the "sweet" cashiers became "witches". Think carefully. People have the wrong notion they can be traced by debit/credit cards only. Wrong. even if one pays in cash and is a regular customer who does several b2b transactions with coupons, their transaction(s) can be pulled out instantly for review. These may be used against them in case the store is reported to corporate. If customer knows everything they are doing is kosher, no problem and they have all the right to complain if they feel they have not gotten good service. But for others, this may help some people to calm down first and weigh it carefully before they call corporate about their transactions gone bad.

HTH.

I seem to think that if there were such a problem with everyone using q's and Wag's losing money - then there would be no cashier who would be confused because they would all know how to handle all the q's already! (Did that even make any sense?)

There are two great Wags here. One seems to be a little more q friendly. And seriously there is one cashier who gets "tired easily" so to speak. I understand them getting tired of all the q's because, quite frankly, I get tired of using them!! LOL (although it is truly worth the hassle to me )
