I would call the manager- Even if he thought it I think he was totally out of line to say that! Where has customer service gone? I think that was incredibly rude and VERY insensitive- sorry this happened to your FIL!

Ahh, sorry he put it that way. My DH is tall--6'9"-- and he has some meat on him. He has broken several office chairs we've had. The man who said that does have a point (though he could have said it differently ). Most adjustable office chairs have a weight limit on them (and height recommendations) and they make special sturdier chairs for people over the average weight/height. I didn't realize that until the last time DH broke the lift mechanism on the chair, the second one in less than 6 months, and we were looking online for one that would last longer. With DH, it's his height that kills the chair. The way he sits, he puts stress in the wrong places than intended and the mechanisms wear out because of it. If your FIL is a larger guy, he might be happier with a different chair. Maybe he could call the manager and ask if there's a way to trade in the chair that keeps breaking and put the value of it towards one of the better-made chairs, if they have them. Your FIL can look the brands up online, if the store itself doesn't have the information, to see which ones might work. At the big office stores, they aren't cheap and we haven't invested in one yet, but DH says they're so much more comfortable for his back and long legs. HTH |

I wouldnt have taken it personally... I'll bet anything he was making a factual statement because, of course, for some things there ARE weight limits, even though not everything is tested for it. For example I'm obese (but working on it!) and I wear out office chairs pretty darned quick @ the moment. I would give the poor repair guy a break. It seems you cant say anything these days without upsetting someone, I read threads about it happening every day. Perhaps your DFIL could drop the possibly clueless repair guy a hint that some folks might take what he said the wrong way?

Humiliating is without a doubt the word I would use. It seems a bit passive aggressive to me that a person that is in charge of 'repairing' the item wouldnt look into a weight limit issue before bringing it to the attention of the customer. Obviously telling a customer that they are so heavy they keep breaking a chair would be a horribly embarrassing event and I have no idea why that person wouldnt actually look up the specs for that chair and only IF it had a weight limit to bring it to the customers attention. Im sure the guy didnt think that he was being insensitive but I dont think that gives him a pass to say something that any normal person would be hurt and offended by. I guess bottom line I think that since he had the chair long enough to repair it that he would look into it and figure out if the chair had a weight limit or if perhaps there was just something faulty in the chair. |

Sorry to have offended you with my post. I was just making a suggestion based on personal experience. Hope your FIL finds a chair that works out or that they fix the one he has so that he doesn't have to take it back again. Last edited by tratra; 10-29-2009 at 09:18 AM. |

As a person sensitive to weight issues myself, I would have been initially insulted by such a comment myself. After reflection, I would likely have come to conclusion the guy was stating a fact rather than implying "Quit sitting on it and it won't break." A funny story (and totally off topic), in lots of places in the world, being called fat is no different than being called tall or short. It's just an observation, not a judgement on that person. Big shocker for me the first time I came across this! |

He probably didnt mean it that way. He was probably just being honest. I dont feel it's rude. The chair could very well have a weight limit on it.

. I love the guy, but I can't see paying $500 for an office chair that's used mainly for gaming just yet. Maybe next year after some more coupon savings add up. |

Well I see all the points but if even name brand stuff wasnt made so cheeply. I have looked at lazy boy chairs and other so called high end stuff and well I take my uncle who used to make furniture. The stuff these days are so cheeply made even a skinny person or a small kid could break em easy. But still costomer service is needed and alot of respect another thing wich is lax these days. I am sorry this has happened. My husband is over 6 feet tall and i am a rounder 5'6 we have a cheeper recliner and it has been supporting out behinds equally. Hope that his pride can be patched up better then the chair. good luck and im sorry.
