| Well that takes some cohones...
I posted a while back about my friend who decided, along with his wife, to ask for my help in naming their 3rd child. I had suggested the name they ultimately used for their 2nd child, so I just figured they liked my ideas. Well...they sure did. They decided to name their last child Eli...the name of my first born. While I am honored they like the name, I was not happy because we do see each other a couple times a year and we communicate regularly (and our children are a big topic of course). I knew this was gonna get weird but Whatever! I emailed him before the baby was born and was asking how we were gonna denote because I was not gonna say "my Eli vs. your Eli" for the rest of my life...it just sounds silly. He says I can call his E2. I email him after Christmas to suggest a riding toy my twins liked and I said he should get one for his kids. I added "even Eli could ride it" He emails me back and said (synopsis) "I thought you were crazy suggesting I put my 2 week old on a riding toy then I realized you were talking about your Eli...I guess this will be happening a lot now" YA FREAKIN THINK??? This is what I was talking about. I love how he assumes _I_ am the crazy one here. I told him not to get confused because any time I say "Eli" I will be talking about the child I gave birth to (yeah, the one who has had the name for five years already) and he could pick something else for me to refer to his kid as (the previously suggested E2, Tres, Jr., or ET...his initials). THey even have the same last initial so that is out. I mean, REALLY...you decide to create this situation...it takes some real stones to act like I am talking about his 2 week old kid and not my own freaking child. Anyway, that is my rant. Even my husband (who was annoyed but not UPSET) read that email and his response was the title of this thread

Yes, it's annoying but that's how it's going to be and he needs to get used to it! My sister and I married guys with the same first name so when we talk about them, we do say 'my' and 'your' to avoid confusion.

I understand your frustration. Yes, I understand they obviously love the name, but I think their decision to give it to their son was tacky. I know others will say "it's not like you have a copyright on it" or whatever, but I still feel it's it bad taste. Come on, of all the names out there they only love this one? puh lease. Funny thing is that I can actually envision my SIL doing something like this someday (and making it into OUR fault).

my youngest dd has a very original name for this country, pretty sure she is the only american kid with that name( in France ,where I am from ,it's not common but not unheard) ,so when a friend ( who lives in the same town than I do)asked me 3 different times in 5 months if she could name her DD like mine ,I told her no. she was mad,but she asked. she chose a different name. I do not hold a copyright either..... |

Bonjour Patch- of course i am dying to know what your youngest dd's name is~ ( don't worry-i'm finished with babies!) I guess your friend made a mistake in asking you- as you indicated-you don't hold the copyright and she could have named her dd the same (you were just being honest about your preference to NOT have her name her dd the same- she shouldn't have asked !) I guess i feel more stongly that an unusual name (dans l'etats-unis) like your dd's should be more protected verses popular names - even Eli is quite popular now and you can't visit a neighbor around here without running into a Jack. Even my Violet (she's 8 going on 9)has run into another Vi in her school! That was a surprise (but now that there is Violet Affeck I'm sure we'll see some younger Vis coming up! Is your daughter Solange ( i've always loved that name!) |

this is something I think about when naming my kids. If I know someone close that has that name I will not use it. just seems bad I guess. but if its someone Ive met once or never never see then I may think about it

Names! Ugh! You know how many Ashleys I knew 24 years ago? Not one. Thought I was being original. Well, we all know what happened with that name! I actually got her name from the actress Elizabeth Ashley. My dd is Ashley Elizabeth. My DH wanted to name her Daisy May and I absolutely refused. I like it better now! LOL

When my oldest daughter was born, I wanted a name nobody else we knew had. I grew up with multiples of the same name on both sides of the family. I chose Mikaela. I didnt know anybody else with that name. Now there are tons of them around. My cousin said the same thing when her daughter was born. What did she name her daughter? Makayla. Different spelling but still the same name.

Jason gets ticked every time cause well...he's not so little anymore....he was told to suck it up and yell at his mother..LOL or as Big Jason points out.."I was here first!"

I actually had a dh's sister name her new daughter Morgan. My 8 year old's name is Morgan! Her mother said it was because she liked our daughters name so much. I think people are so self absorbed they just can't think about anyone else but themselves. Now when mil and fil talks about Morgan my dd thinks it's about her.

If you know any greeks, you'll already know how annoying this is. The 1st son is supposed, if you follow tradition, to be named after the fathers father. When we have family get togethers, there are at least 6 people with the same name! In our case, they're all Constantinos. Granted, they all took a nickname, but the only nick names for it are Dino or Costa. I always catch myself talking to one of hubby's cousins wives and our conversation winds up being a confusing battle of NO, my Dino NOT yours! ![]() I'm sorry you have to deal with this, take it with a grain of salt though. It is actually a compliment! Annoying one but still. |

I named my daughter Emily Grace. My sister had a baby a year later named her Emma Grace.. Then we nicknamed my daughter Emmy, short for Emily of course. Guess what? They call their daughter Emmy. Now is it that flipping hard to say Emma versus Emmy? Its not like they shortened cuz Emma was so long.

I would be upset if anyone in my kids' playgroup has the same name much less than a friend naming her kid after my kid.

Everyone in our family is either Mike or Jim, so when we had 2 boys, we named them Mike and Jim. We feel it is an honor to name them the traditional names in our family, and they know who they are named after. My husband is a teacher, and has so much trouble pronouncing names in class, his requirements were, 'make it something obvious to pronounce' and 'make it obvious whether it's a boy or a girl'. When my SIL found out she was pregnant with a boy, knowing every man in her family is also a Mike or a Jim, I said, "feel free to name it Mike or Jim if you want." We see them so infrequently, it wouldn't be too confusing. She said, "Don't you think there are enough Mike's and Jim's in this family?" Well, obviously I didn't since we added 2 more! ![]() So they named him Tyler. My DH has 7 Tylers in his classes this year! But at our family reunion, little Tyler is unique.
