Ewwwwww!!!! Help! Roaches! Gross!!!! So gross!!! I've got little roaches in my kitchen!!!! Ewwww!!! Someone, please, quickly, tell me how to get rid of these ASAP! With as few toxins as possible! I live in a new townhouse neighborhood and have never had this problem. A couple months ago, the boarders that were living next door were picked up by INS and deported (seriously, they like raided the house!). So, it's been empty. God forbid the owners actually take care of it. And our super strict association is saying there isn't anything they can do! ARGGHHH!!! I'm trying to report it to the county as abandoned. Meanwhile, I've got roaches in my house that I suspect came from next door! Any ideas asap??!!! It freaks me out to think these dirty things are walking where I cook for my kids! Or on the dishes!! EWWWW!!!!! HELP PLEASE!

Before calling an exterminator, deep clean your kitchen. Those buggers love paper, so anything papery or cardboard that you can throw out and put its contents in plastic, do so. If you have lined cabinets, roaches like those also. At night, keep your drains covered and everything DRY. Roaches like water. Any cracks in your kitchen, like around windows, doorframes and baseboards, caulk them. Hope that helps some. We had a situation with them last year and those seemed to work for us, an the occasional spraying of raid at night, before we went to bed.

Yuck. I've never had the (dis)pleasure of a german cockroach infestation. i.e. the little ones you're talking about, but i have had several run ins with the palmetto bug and water bug variety which are scarier, but much easier to get rid of. i had a friend way back in high school who lived in a house where all the kitchen cabinets were so full of roaches, you could see them scatter when opened a drawer. needless to say, i never ate or drank anything there while visiting. good luck. i would absolutely call an exterminator.

If you call an exterminator ask about the once a year pest control. It works. I live in Florida which in case no one knew it is the bug capital of the US. I have been using the once a year pest control for about 15 years and never see any bugs. If you want to get rid of them with few toxins get the roach motels - they go in and get stuck to the paper and die. No pesticides and no mess. Good Luck they are a pain and are so gross.

I vote for the exterminator - if you are looking for a quick solution. They usually guarantee their services for 30 days or more - so if the bugs aren't gone you can call again. We have had silverfish since moving into this house - even the exterminator has not been able to get rid of them. Fired him - what's the point if the bugs are still here anyway? I had the exterminators here over and over - I think they thought I was crazy but in the end, I just gave up - apparently no one can get rid of silverfish without burning the house down. We think they are living in the attic and loving our blown-in insulation (it's made of some kind of paper).

First of all, never ever move to Florida. The bugs are ridiculous here!! The exterminator should work well, but that can get really pricey. Several of our friends get do-it-yourself varieties at Home Depot/Lowe's for less than $20.

Thanks all. I'm going to give the house a house a DEEP cleaning this weekend. I already put down Combat thingys. My DH wants to bomb the house but I hate the idea of having all those chemicals all over everything! I've got two little ones here that end up chewing on almost everything. It's just SOOO gross! We used to have silverfish in my old house. Every spring we'd have to go thru the cupboards and throw away a bunch of boxed stuff. Pain in the butt but somehow roaches are worse to me. Little nasty germ carrying things! I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and pay an exterminator. It would be worth it to have them gone!!!!!! Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

clean,,clean clean....(get rid of any paper bags from the grocery store and do not keep any around...then can come into the house on them) but then call in the pros! the bombs do not work... your biggest problem is next door tho...until that is dealt with, the bugs will keep coming...but an exterminator can at least keep them under control, call your local health dept. they may be able to help with getting the abandoned property taken care of..

I say go for the exterminator. We had a problem with the house next door. It was a rental consistently rented to very low income very filthy people. First a couple with 3 small children, and numerous dogs who instead of taking their trash to the dump or hiring a service just piled the garbage bags (including tons of dirty diapers) in the back yard. Then once they were evicted a woman who had her 3 preteens living in utter filth with a dog who was never walked outside and allowed to mess all over the boy's bedroom. When she was evicted for failure to pay rent she told another neighbor that she was leaving some stuff behind and to feel free to go in and take what she wanted. Well my neighbor went in and after five minutes came out retching with her legs (she was wearing jeans) covered in roach bites! The landlord finally had to come in and strip the house down to the sub flooring and completely redo it. Unfortunately for the rest of us on the street when he started gutting the place the roaches infiltrated the rest of our houses. Since we couldn't coordinate a time with our neighbors for everyone to get treated by the exterminator simultaneously (the only way to be rid of them for good, otherwise they'll just move from one house to the next as you bomb) we got an exterminator who could put up a "barrier" on our property. Every 3 months she comes by and treats the border of our property. We just need to keep the dog inside for a couple of hours after she comes by. The first few treatments she also came inside and hit the kitchen and bath with a pesticidal gel. We have a small child as well so she was carefull not to put it anywhere he could reach. We've now been roach free for about 2 years. We still have her come and do the external treatments though. Better safe than sorry. We think we'll be able to finally discontinue it this summer after one last warm weather treatment.

I lived in a house once that had roaches and I am a major bug freak can't stand any kinds of bugs eww. To get rid of them I bought some Boric Acid at the drugstore and mixed a cup of that with 2 tsps of sugar and poured it along the wall back behind my appliances so the kids and pets couldn't reach it. Within 24 hours I could notice a huge difference. The roaches eat it or carry it off to die, I didnt have to clean up any dead bugs or anything which made it seem like they were never there in the first place.

I have a roach problem too. Started when I was in an appartment and the neighbors moved. I didn't think it was the reason untill the neighbor upstairs from them told us that he started seeing them when they moved too. We've moved 3 times after that and still, the little suckers moved along with us. We use the roach motels as my dh puts it and they work ok. I also bought the gel thing in a tube and did notice a reduction in them. The only gross thing about those things is that I have to keep cleaning up the dead ones from the back of the cabinets. We are definately calling an exterminator but I just don't know which one.

Yep roaches LOVE boxes. So be careful about packages you get in the mail. You never know what "friend" is coming with it! That and freecycle OMG we went to pick up freecycle stuff one time and found a small roach and i about had a heart attack. We left the stuff outside and killed the roach and moved it alllll the way to the end of the driveway for trash pick up i didnt even wanna deal with it i was so grossed out. We have cats that tell us when anything is in the house so i watch to see if they are stalking something and if they are i know we have an issue. And yes until the next door is delt with it wont go away sadly. My ex boyfriend lived in an apt complex and if one person had them everyone seemed to. But they came up from the water lines and pipes so we kept everything closed off that we could while not in use ( sink drains etc) Boaric acid does work well with the sugar for any animal including ants. If you think you might have an issue with them in cabinets put them in small caps ( drink caps lids etc) that way they dont spill out Anything food wise thats in paper ( cereal ) put in plastic food containers and pitch the paper
