You must perform operations in this order: 1. Parenthesis or any grouping symbols 2. exponents 3. multiplication and or division/ working from left to right, in other words it's not multiply first and then divide 4. addition and or subtraction/ working from left to right (similar to #3), in other words it's not addition first and then subtraction Have fun with the math class!!! |

Thank you all so much. I got 40 too. I could not remember if a negative number becomes positive when it is squared. I too got 40!!! I am taking a college algebra class after not having any math since 1987. In order to advance in my degree I had a few classes I had to take and one was college algebra. The girl who is giving me her math book has not sent it to me yet and the teacher emailed several math problems to the class. It just looked too easy. Why do we make things so hard. LOL

I missed 2 questions about this problem. what is the degree of expression and what is the best name for the polynomial. I said 2 degree and trinomial>>> I am not sure

Multiplying like signs (both + or both -) positive answer, unlike sign neg answer If mutiplying several #'s with neg sign, count how many you are multiplying, even # will be pos answer, odd a# will be neg answer Ex -3 x -3 x -3 x -3 There are four -3's, so your answer answer will be pos. -3 x -3 x -3 There are three -3's, so answer will be neg. Doesn't all have to be same #, just did that to be quick. You'll be surprised at how quickly it will come back to you. |

A polynomial is a monomial or a sum of monomials. A polynomial of two terms is a binomial. A polynnomial of three terms is a trinomial, so your example was a trinomial. The degree of a polynomial is the largest exponent. So in your example, the two was squared, so the degree is 2. |

You would have to have something to the 3rd power to be cubic. Squared is quadratic.

Thank you again. The question was what is the best name for the polynomial? I checked back and I had changed cubic to trinomial. She has not checked my work so I do not know if everything is right or not. It threw me when she asked for the name of the polynomial. I called the girl who sold me her book and she can not find it so I went online and ordered it with express delivery. I have begged her for the book but she just can not find it. She does have the practice book so I will pick that up tonight.

yes it was correct. Thank you. How about this one??? If my book doesn't come in the mail soon I am gonna be so behind!! The length of a rectangle lacks one unit being twice its width. 1. If w represents the width of the rectangle, name its length in terms of w. 2. Name its perimeter (in simplest form) in terms of w. 3. Name its area (in simplest form) in terms of w 4. If the rectangle has a perimeter of 46 units, how many square units make up its area?

1. 2w-1 2. 6w-2 3. 2w^2-w If anyone can recommend a good Algebra website I would appreciate it.

#2 and #3 look right. I get 120 for #4 use the equation for the perimeter in #2 to solve for w then plug the value for w into the equation for the are in #4 |

Your right it is 120. I went back and checked my math and I had placed the number 9 in the equation instead of an 8. Thank You!

watch this thread I am sure I will need you again. My book came in the mail today. My friend still has not found her calculator (ti 83) so I guess I will buy one tomorrow, darn! I am sure her hellions used it to calibrate tires, or make mud pies with or something. I told them today I would give them 5.00 if they would look around and find it for their mother. I hope they find it.
