Week 1 - spent $54/budget $50 = overspent $4 Week 2 - budget $75 Week 3 - budget $75 Week 4 - budget $75 This is for a family of 4 for all groceries household, and hba. My kiddos go back to school August 1st so need to budget school supplies. Need to think on that one. Hoping to do $60 or less not including backpacks. Good luck everyone!

Almost the end of the first week of July and currently under budget! Of course, it helped to have some really good in-store coupons from the new Price Chopper in my area. I wonder how much longer we can expect to see these good deals??? Budget for July: $500 Spend to date: $93 Balance: $407 I picked up some inexpensive chicken thighs and removed the skin and bone. I usually only buy boneless breasts, and frankly, may stick to that. What a pain in the @$s to do this for so little meat with the thighs. The meal I made was yummy, but do you really save that much money for the work involved? To be extra frugal, I did cook up the bones to make chicken salad with the extra meat (ok, about enough for ONE sandwich!) LOL! |

MGA, the only cut of chicken that I will buy for the purpose of deboning is split breast. Tons of meat there, great sale price usually, and not too much effort.

My experience runs right with what others above have said--it takes some time to get in a savings/stockpiling/budgeting groove. Once you do, you realize that it is all worth the wait. You also realize just how un-thrifty we are as a culture. I started with learning the ins and outs of smart couponing and right away joining some trains, which allowed me to get more coupons for items I buy, which led to stockpiling. That allowed me to start setting the budget tighter. All these things work in tandem. It is a learn as you go process, and I don't think we are ever done learning. It sure helps to read about the successes of others here in the monthly budget thread! ------------------------------------------ JULY: For a few years, I have been pushing for a new fridge with a larger freezer OR a stand-alone freezer for the garage. I don't need to tell you all why. Good news: My 26.4 cu foot fridge-freezer will be delivered Friday. The rub: Our nine-year-old fridge went on the blink the night before the fourth of July when temp outside was 103. I was in and out of it prepping for entertaining (15# of chicken, a salad, etc) ...and noticed condensation. I pulled it out, dusted coils, etc..At one poinht, it completely died. Of course, I am home alone with the four-year-old, running back and forth from the garage coolers to the fridge and running out for ice. Long story short....Compressor shot and though the freezer is now working, the fridge is up and down--goes as high as 60. We are living out of coolers and two dorm fridges until then. How this affects the ol' budget: While I lost some perch, fish sticks, and french fries, I did salvage the meat, veggies, and boxed frozen stuff. We'll get an Energy Star rebate which should cover what we lost. I'll also be able to do more pre-prep and freeze. Because fridge/freezer space is tight, this is a stay-out-of-stores, no-spend week. We are eating what we have on hand and in the stockpile. I am also lowering the budget for the rest of the month to pad the camping fund. Need no HBA or home care products, no gifts, so....setting it at $200 for the rest of the month. --------------------- |

Shelly, I'm glad you were able to salvage some things. Isn't it funny how excited us couponers can get about a new fridge and/or freezer? My chest freezer made me absolutely giddy!

This is my first check-in this month. I did a big Kroger trip mostly stocking up on snacks for back-to-school. We splurged on some things for July 4th, including supplies for a "tea party" and a sundae bar. At CVS, I got 6 Coke 2L, 3 JIF Peanut Butters with a rain check, and 2 mascara (I'm really picky about my mascara, and this was a good deal for my brand). At Wags, I got 11 packs of bacon, 2 dz eggs, 2 jugs of Welch's grape juice on clearance, and a 10-pack of Juicy Juice boxes on clearance. They actually charged me for 12 packs of bacon, so I'll try for a refund next time I'm there. Total Spent: $96.61 Total Tax: $8.59 Total Remaining: $153.39 Kroger OYNO cats: $8 RA +ups: $0 CVS ECBs: $0 Wags RRs: $0

Week 2 check in: Under budget by $134.00 It "helps" that I refrigerator space is at a premium until Saturday, when the new fridge will be delivered and run for 24 hours. We are down to what fits in two dorm fridges and a 5-day cooler. AND some salvaged frozen stuff...(the freezer is going strong; the fridge is not holding a consistent temp). Anyway, we are so low on food...I am making a small trip today for staples (milk, juice, bread, ice, yogurt, cheese) and items for our annual fiesta cookout which happens to be tomorrow. This is being cut from NEXT week's budget, even though technically, I am buying it a day early. As much as I hate to make multiple Kroger trips in a week, for fear of overspending, I am going back Saturday to fill out the remaining week menu, and restock the freezer with some sale items. ---------- Summer stockpile report: I did a great job stocking up on pasta and sauce, canned veggies, tea bags, sugar/sweeteners, tuna, TP, paper towels, foil, detergent, household cleaners, and all bath, dental, hair items. We have plenty to get through the summer. I am lower on soup, mac cheese, pancake mix, V-8 and other juices, snacks, cereal (the more I buy, the more they eat). I am going to work harder next year to back stock in these areas. ----------------------------------------- |

Budget for July: $500 Spent so far: $274 Left for month: $226 Just a little over where I wanted to be right now, but not by much. I haven't seemed to be able to find any decent deals at one store and haven't had the time to skip from store to store to get the best deals either. Plus, with the heat, I just haven't felt up to chasing down deal. Guess it's better than trying to shop with a foot of snow on the ground! Happy Friday the 13th everyone! |
