Has anyone else read Little Heathens by Mildred Kalish? She grew up on a farm in Iowa and describes how they were self-sufficient. Lots of great antecdotes about her life as a child, but also lots of great frugal living tips. I thought it was fascinating to read about her daily life - all of the work that went into the daily meals is hard to imagine. Even includes some recipes. My favorite story is what they thought of women who were wasteful b/c they did not swipe the inside of an eggshell to get out every last bit of the egg white. THAT'S frugal! The author's website, includes recipes: Little Heathens | Home Amazon.com: Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression: Mildred Armstrong Kalish: Books

thanks. I've added this book to my wish list for family gifts. I appreciate the link. I'd probably buy the book based on the picture alone of the author. Looks like someone who loves life. Refreshing given all the negative news we are bombarded with. Thanks again.

It's actually a very positive, uplifting, cheerful book considering the times. Unfortunately she doesn't have any future speaking dates liste don her website, but I would love to meet her in person.

I loved reading the Laura Ingles Wilder books to my children. They are great books that teach all about love, respect, frugality etc. A special memory was reading Farmer Boy to my son when he was home with the flu (probably when he was in middle school!). Kids are never too old to read to.

If anyone has this book it would be a great "pay it forward" train to share with those who are interested!

| I checked it out of the library, but yes you're right. It's a pretty fast read, too, but maybe that's b/c I found it so interesting. Have you ever done that type of train here?
