What did you "cheap-out" on and regret it?

I'm really liking this thread: http://www.afullcup.com/forums/fruga...gal-about.html
and this thread: http://www.afullcup.com/forums/fruga...gal-crazy.html

and now I want to hear what you went cheap on and it turned out to be a mistake.

One of mine: ankle athletic socks in the Target brand. I don't know what species they are supposed to fit, but it's not a human foot. Maybe Gumby. I only wear them around the house when I am completely out of other options and DH laughs like crazy when he sees them. They're a mess.

Good topic! Along the lines of socks, I don't really buy women's socks anymore. They're way too big. I mean really...they have a range of like size 4-9! Wow! DH ends up taking them half the time and he wears a size 12!!! I like to buy little boy's socks and they fit great for my size 6.5 foot!

I know there's something that I "cheaped out" on, but I must have blocked it from my mind b/c I can't remember anything!

Well, I have to say, on appliances. Our micro blew up....and we needed a quick fix. We havent made any major purchases but are considering a new fridge stove and over the range microwave. In the meantime we bought a small emerson .7 cu ft 700 watts countertop microwave and its such a waste of 60, considering we could have gotten a GE 1cu ft 1100 Watts for 9$ more at WM....

Sigh, don't go el cheapo on the appliances--as you all know--do your research.

Definately ditto on the socks---oh and underwear for sure.

Seriously! There is no way you could put your foot and my foot side by side and say here's a pair of socks that are basically one size fits most so y'all have to figure it out! The heel ends up half way to my knee! I bet a man thought of the range...

I have noticed that at Target in the $1 Spot, the socks seem to have a couple different more appropriate ranges.

I used to buy my pants at Express but they are expensive so the last couple times I bought cheap pants and they are wearing out. Next time I'll wait for a coupon and go to Express (I love their pants)

Couches - We seam to wear these out. I'm waiting till the kids are a few years older and splurging on some great ones that will hopefully last a long long time! The ones we have now are in horrible shape but I'm going to try to hold out a few more years if I can till I can afford good ones.

I have a king size bed. When I bought it, I couldn't believe the price for a king size mattress. So I went cheap, more like in the middle, but I wish I had spent the money on a nice mattress. Now I don't sleep very well. I will have to shell out some major bucks for a new mattress. There goes my tax return or maybe I will just suffer through it.

Good thread!!!!
Some of the dress clothes I have tried to go cheap on (Kohls) have never ended up lasting. They end up shrinking or fading. If I would have saved my money on all the cheap clothing I have bought, I probably could put together a fair amount of nicer items that will last me longer and fit better.

Can't really think of anything else at the moment but I know there are other items. Some of the food items I have went cheap on didnt turn out the best, can't think of specifics at the moment.

I LOVE EXPRESS JEANS!!!!

I remember a few years ago they had a hell of a deal for jeans something like buy one get one. I bought a bunch and now after having a baby I can barely fit into them..but they're still good shape!!

My boyfriend and I got a mattress at a furniture place that was cosing in town. It felt comfortable when we layed on it and it wasn't name brand. They were charging 1200 but after my boyfriend (the awesome deal maker!) we got it for 500. We've had it for a little over a year and it's a total POS!!! My back hurts just thinking about it.

I was out of laundry soap and we were tight on money one week. I just need a small bottle to get us through. I ran to the dollar tree and got something that was a dollar. Ugh big mistake! My clothes still stunk! I still have the bottle in my cabinet I'll only use it if I really really have to.

Thats all I can think of at this moment, I know theres more though .

Christmas was tight. But I wanted the kids to be able to open stuff. So we went to The Dollar Tree. I don't think they have anything left from Christmas. Oh well...lesson learned. Buy on sale and put back.

I cheaped out on a wood laminate floor and I regret it daily. You can see footprints and it drives me crazy. Also, it can scratch and I am forever telling the kids not to scratch the floor. It did get damaged during the hurricane and we got replacement money...just need to get around to replacing. The next floor I bought was porcelain tile- sturdier than ceramic. I am so happy every single day. Not only it is beautiful (paid extra to have it laid on the diagnonal b/c that is a dream of mine) it chipped when I dropped something heavy and because porcelain was guaranteed I got it fixed for FREE. So...I say I will not cheap out on floors. We have many contractor grade light fixtures and stuff that are nice cooking, but nice floors from now on.

I cheaped out on a pots and pans set. I think we got to use them a whole 5 times before the inside starting chipping. We had to throw them out.

Us too, we bought cheapo laminate flooring when we moved into our house. 4 years later it looks like junk. Oh well, I guess. Never again though.

Underwear I never chep out on. Always buy the victoria's secret cotton panties. Last me for a couple years. The hanes, etc you get at Wally World/Target just don't last a fraction of the time.

I try to buy something that is "timeless" so to speak and wear it out.

This happened to me too! My "new" king mattress is only 2.5 months old, and it's like two cereal bowls already. I didn't think I was "cheaping" out. It cost $1800 for crying out loud! If i could return it i would.

Anyway, I'm going to read more of these posts and write what I did cheap out on.

Love this!!

You know, sometimes when i go cheap, it is worth it and other times, it's so not. I will have to say my official answer is Wal Mart clothing. I have bought shirts there and washed them once only to have them literally come apart at the seams. Shrinkage is another huge factor. I bought a shirt there three weeks ago that is still holding up great, so i guess that one's a keeper. But the two pairs of jeans i bought don't fit right at all. I tried a bunch on at the store, and these were the best fit. After reading this post, i might need to check out Express. I've never had jeans that fit!

I needed some new bras and they had some on clearance at Walmart and I had a $1 coupon for them. $4 for bras. I bought two, brought them home and washed them. The first time I wore one, they itched so bad I could not stand it. I literally came home, took it off and threw it in the trash.

Then I went to the Bali outlet and bought two of their bras for $30 some dollars. They are sooo comfy. I put them on first thing in the morning and take them off last thing before I go to bed. I am going back to get another set when I get the time.

P.S. I was shopping for bras with my DD. I tried one on and it didn't work. She asked me why some bras fit and some don't. I told her if I knew the answer to that, I could rule the world!! I also told her that when you wear a bra, you shouldn't be aware that your wearing it.
