Stinky Potato Bin

Hi,
My potatoes rotted. Ugh. I keep them in the bottom of the pantry in a metal bin. I don't think I had them too long; about 3 weeks, but as usual I forgot to put them in the green produce bags.

They were really bad too, as in liquid, when I figured out that bad smell was not the garbage pail!

I washed out the bin, but it still smelled bad. So I left it soak in bleach water all day and then I washed it again. It still reeks!

Any idea how to get a rotten potato smell out of a metal bin? It's so cute, I hate to throw it out.

TIA

The orange box is baking soda. I'll try it. Would you mix it in water like a paste, and spread it on? Or sprinkle it on dry? Do you think the box has to be new, or can I just use the one in my fridge?

Thanks.

I would use a new box to be sure. I would sprinkle it on, let is set for a while and then use a dripping wet sponge to rub it into the the box. Rinse very well and let sit in the sun to dry. I do this all the time with the tray in my dog's crate, so I imagine it would work for you. You already did the hard part getting out the liquid potato (YUCK!!)

I have also heard putting balled up newspapers inside and also charcol (was from an article about stinky refrigerators), but I have never tried this.
