Can you install a DVD player in a minivan?

DH and I are looking at either a minivan (Chrysler or Dodge 2005-2006) or a Ford Escape or Chevrolet Equinox (2005-2006).
The minivans that have the DVD players are so cool! I wondered if anyone knew if you can install a DVD player aftermarket, if the van we choose does not have one? I'm not talking about the DVD players that just velcro to the back of the headrest, but the ones that attach to the ceiling.
Anyone have any experience in this?
TIA!

DH is a chrysler tech and he says yes you can..... but only some attatch to the ceiling, depends who installs it.... he says the factory brand DVD players will work best B/C the attach to the cieling.... the aftermarket ones go on the seat. HTH! ( DH says if the van is still under warranty take it to the dealer and have it installed, this way if a problem occurs they have to fix it!)

The vans we would choose would probably not still be under warranty. So who would I take to install it- a Chrysler/Dodge Dealership?

Well, I couldn't install one, but my BIL(who is a professional installer) sure could!

He installs stereos, systems, DVD players, all kinds of after-market stuff! He even designs and makes his own speaker boxes. You may want to check out car-stereo installation places, that sort of thing. Most likely would be cheaper than a dealership.

If not underwarranty you could go to a car audio place and have them do it, but the dealer is better because all of their techs only work on that spacific brand and probably won't mess up/ cob the wiring.... Oh and DH says most dealers won't install aftermarket players ( will only install ones from the factory) so call and ask first if that is the route you are going to go. HTH!

I've also seen the headrest monitors, where you actually get new head rests for your seats with built-in monitors {no velcro} those seem like a good idea.

We have dual monitors that velcro, the kids used them inside during a slumber party last summer and someone stepped on the passive monitor, better than the main monitor, at least they can still use one.

I, personally, like the fact that I can bring them inside for a few reason, security, first of all. Even factory mounted car stereos are stolen, so I can imagine that either these can be stolen or a stupid criminal would try and break it.

I also like that ours can play burned DVDs and CDs, so I can plan music/video for the entire 7 hour trip on just one CD or DVD and we're good to go.

But the fact that the kids can use them inside as well is handy. My BF, clever man, figured out that you can just use the velcro straps on the monitor to attach/hang the monitors from the underside of my kids bunk bed and they can lay there and watch a movie without fighting about who gets to hold it.

Mine doesn't use batteries, a definite must-have when I buy new ones.

My .02c

{Oh, my youngest LOVES to take a blanket, pillow and the DVD player and push the couch slightly out from the wall and watch movies back there. I think it's oddly adorable, couldn't have that with ones built-in!}

If you do the built-in route, don't have your neighbors brothers girlfriends best friends uncle do it. This is something that will presumably be wired into your car battery and you really don't want shoddy workmanship, or unsightly damage to upholstery.

I say this having had my car stereo replaced by a friend of a friend in front of my house one day many, many years ago. Wound up destroying the wiring in the vehicle and it was never the same again. And since that led to me PUSH STARTING my car while in labor with my first daughter, I'm pretty anti-amateur car repair.

Any reputable car stereo shop will be able to do you a nice install. How cheap it will be may be a different question.

Most minivans come with a DVD option from the factory since they are meant to haul kids so it may be a simpler install in the van you buy than most other cars.

I drive a Honda Element & check in on an owners club site for them. Elements never came with a DVD option but there are many that have installed them theirselves or had them installed by a professional.

If it were my car, I'd take it to a real stereo shop - not a superstore like Circuit City or Best Buy. That tends to be where installers learn the trade - not something I want them doing on my car if it involves custom work. Any monkey can install a head unit when you have a kit & a standard matching wiring harness but true custom work is best left to a specialist.

We just looked into putting one in our Ford Expedition for our summer vacation. You can go to Best Buy and they sell only one brand and they can install it. Some electronics store can put them in as well. We found that they aren't cheap. The cheapest we found was $600 + $100 for installation. We had to be careful of who installed it because of the heating and air that runs along the roof.
We opted for the ones that hang on the headrest and they did well for the trip. Ours did not hook by velcro it was a buckle. They held up well and did not fall off the seats.

You'll need to look into headphones or a FM transmitter to transmit to your radio for the seat units like ours.

Good luck
